@Shadow Wolf Your comment is very vague. Are you implying they did human sacrifices ? During which period of time ? How is that linked to their survival ? I think I was quite clear, and I gave a very precise source. Argue with it, not me.
@Shadow Wolf Do you have some links to provide because you said a lot of stuff that I can't find research about, like for example I find stuff about mass graves but it says it's controversial if it was sacrificial or not. And none of this seems related to the so called survival of druidism either. Also I still don't see the problem with the quote in my first comment, which was reported by the greek author from early IIIrd century Diogene Laertius ; are you saying he made it up or something ?
@@wanderer965 I'm struggling to understand your first comment too tbh and what it has to do with the survival of druidism or whatever you mean by that you made three quotes that suggested that's how they based their lives on when it fantasy in my opinion the druids hurt a lot of people in their time human sacrifice was a big deal to them like the old croghan man bog bodies with ropes around their arms and legs still in good we'll persevered condition even after 3000 years proving un involuntary human sacrifices you got wicker men sacrifices also don't romanticise the druids they where pretty brutal people with a lot of power in their community would have been a pretty scary time living around them back in them times that's for sure
@@taffy9966 You need to make sentences, you're exhausting to read. I won't answer another comment written like that. I'm not the one who said sacrifices were linked to the survival of druidism, ask Lady Shadow Wolf about it. I already answered her about the validity of the human sacrifices hypothesis. Concerning the quote, as I also told her already, it's from Diogene Laertius who was an early IIIrd century greek author. If you all disagree with what he says, that's fine, say he lied, that you know better than him or whatever you want but I didn't made that up. I simply added a complement of info to the video. Quoting someone for the sake of sharing info is not romanticizing even if it doesn't fit the vision you all have of the druids.
@@wanderer965 I'll write how i please thanks i never said you said sacrifices were crucial to druid survival you came up with that yourself for some irrelevant reason i'm just pointing out your first comment made no sense seemed like your romanticising the druids with some airy fairy bullshit your all over the place as for this ancient greek writer your talking about i think i'd choose modern evidence and science over the validity of weather druids practiced human sacrifice or not over some ancient greek writings makes sense.👍
@Lady Shadow Wolf I can see this has meaning to you. I agree in the sense that no one should claim to be a Druid, but at the same time, in my opinion, no one should claim any title to begin with. Regardless, I understand there are titles for a reason. The original Druids no longer exist; this is true. I suppose it does not have the same affect on me as it does you when someone claims to be a Druid. I will say however and to be fair, that I would not give someone credit who claims themselves to be a Druid to begin with... but I get it.
@Lady Shadow Wolf if you have Celtics ancestry you can consider yourself a Druid by blood if you have gift of foresight and connect to your ancestors it’s not hard to learn and he’s taught if you are spiritual .
@Lady Shadow Wolf everyone is different but just because you are not or not chosen by them does not make anyone else not. You have an ancestry test saying you are Native American because many say that but it’s only few left and native Ancestry is hard to pick up on and if it is it’s way under 5% which is not enough to be consider Native American legally ? Everyone path is different their are false people but their can be people that experience true connections to their ancestry.
Without knowing our ancestors we can't know ourselves. Back to nature brings happiness and joyful feelings. Think of all magic Freya has hidden in nature for us. Thanks for your studies helping us on our journey.
As someone who feels a pull toward nature - sometimes I have to resist hugging trees and tend to touch any plant life in my path - I have been intrigued by Druidry. I had no idea that they were politicians, lawyers, and educators. So fascinating! Thanks for sharing!
@@helenwood8482 : During a walk, I passed by a Little Free Library that had a Druid tarot deck and book. That was when I was getting intrigued by both Druidry and tarot. It was eerie and seemed like a sign, so I took them and have been using the deck as part of my ritual every morning.
Oh same 😂 I love nature so much. Trees and woodlands in particular. My imagined happy place is lying in a field at sunset/night looking up at the sky surrounded by trees, and with a slight breeze.
A Rastafarian becomes a Rastafarian when he declares himself so, the same goes for a Catholic or Cistercian monk. There is no need to join an "order" to become. Ask yourself; What do you feel?
Saint Patrick (from Rome) was tasked with killing the last of the Druids. that's the truth behind St Patricks day. It's a sad day for the Irish, not a day of celebration.
As a dnd player, it was interesting to learn the true origins of the druids! Also, here is a silly video idea but one I would love to see: Maybe a video on what you as a Pagan eat in a day? As a big fan of cooking myself and a beginner Pagan, I would love to see some examples of recipes, especially how to incorporate seasonal ingredients into daily meals!
The way you can become a druid is by learning ancient Celtic art. The answers that you’re looking for are in the bird Effigies. You look for a bird beak on one side, you look for a bird in it’s entirety on the other, and then eventually you will be able to see the profile pictures on the edges. The art is to be looked at over the shoulder as if you’re looking from behind into the side. It’s a portrait or profile picture. It’s just a lost art and I believe we can all learn to see this once again. Once we do we can understand language of the first people. What I learned is that people are not of the earth but they are the earth. We are connected to it because we are it… The line that defined the person walking on the earth disappeared. They were masters of nature because they were nature.
If we are to write things down, what shall we use for paper? Some ancients used clay, some papyrus scrolls, remember things decay or crumble to dust. Fresh minds are the medium for knowledge and wisdom. Each generation renews our quest.
Look for me beneath the trees.. I love druids and druidry . I find it fascinating. Verbal lore back then was the way that worked best and I think they were afraid of if the information they had were to fall into the wrong hands. Equally today, you have the Mason's and even the boy scouts have secret societies within them.. I mean there is something behind not putting it into writing, but I would love to read or discover a library full of lore.
@Shadow Wolf It seems that an unbroken chain of succession is something that is very important to you, just as it is for Christianity. Perhaps your latent Christianity is a chain you havent broken yet? To say what you said about me and my practice implies a dualistic way of thinking. If you step back and look at what little we know of ancient druidry and you compare it to modern druidry, you will of course see many differences. But you will also see many similarities. These "hippies" are genuinely plowing a path into the future while honoring an ancient form of thought and action. To say it is disrespectful is an odd statement on your part. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Considering that the Gods I work with seem to have little care of what I call myself, perhaps it is the opposite of what you say about it? You may speak as you will about our path, that is your right as a person that is lucky enough to not live under an oppressive, and dogmatic canonical religion. But just know that the freedon of paganism is my right as well. If I follow my path with honor, diligence and sincerety, then I am free to call myself whatever I like.
@Shadow Wolf You argue from a very angry and wounded perspective. Criticizing and attacking others who dont measure up to your expectations. I see your pain and I am sad for you. I wish better days for you. But, you will never see them until you step through the portal that you fear so much. Criticizing me for calling myself a Druid is as absurd as me attacking you for calling yourself Shadow Wolf, since you are clearly neither a shadow or a wolf. I urge you to take the freedom of our shared pagan path and use it to work on your own darkness. Let the Gods work out what they want modern paganism to look like.
I did watch Sword in The Stone, but Quest for Camelot. That was the quintessential Arthurian movie for me growing up. I loved the music, the animation was beutiful and gods, it made as a light (as well as swords in general) awesome.
As a Druid from eastern, the Druids festival to healing the nature might be one of the tasks. The confirmation of the effect after the festival would be important. The communication with nature and healing nature also part of the capabilities.
My calling is a Druid/ Witch. I believe it to be someone who is connected with nature, can use plants for their medicinal healing properties, perhaps a way finder. My heritage is Celtic and we can trace our family line back to around 11-1200. I have feet that carry me over mountains (currently my work protecting native species in New Zealand) I love the feeling of being on top of the world by myself walking for miles a day I’m a photographer but in time I will see more than the camera. My journey begun long ago but at 42 now I’m only still in the beginning’s of realising my true path. 🙏
I'm old...59....but been looking into Paganism the last few years. I am drawn to it. I have about fine tuned it down to Druidry. I wish I had found Paganism when I was younger in my twenties because thats when I began to explore outside my Christian upbringing. The internet was not around so it was almost impossible to obtain info about alternative spiritual practices. IN any case, at least I found it before i died....I can get a little pleasure my last years. I finally found what I was seeking.....better late than never.
Love the video! I have an idea for a future one: maybe you could do a pagan bookshelf tour? You could go through all the books on paganism you have and tell us a little bit about what you think of them. (I'm drawn to the book on your shelf that's just called "Pagans" but I can't look it up because I can't see the author's name lol).

Mother Earth you are my life support system, as a soldier I must drink your blue water, live inside your red clay and eat your green skin. Help me to balance myself as you hold in balance the earth the sea and the space environment. Help me to open my heart, knowing that the universe will feed me. I pray my boots will always kiss your face, and my footsteps match your heartbeat, carry my body through space and time, you are my connection to the universe and all that comes after. I am yours and you are mine. I salute you. Just an old soul.
As a practicing Druid who's father was one and his father going back many generations and I know that's true because I have recieved conformation from an independent source. It is interesting to see an Outsider's perspective. The most Important interpretation of the word Druid is ' Keeper of the Truth. ' . According to the Brehon law killing someone out side of battle was concidered murder. So the Idea they commited Human Sacrifice is contradicted by records and writtings from Ireland and other Celtic Writtings. There are many Written Sources extant in Ireland. Including the Cattle Raid of Cooley which is free of Christian glosses.

I LOVED this video! I genuinely appreciate how academic you are about exploring and presenting paganism, but are still able to keep a sense of wonder and magic in your perspective. Thank you for bringing attention to how biased the accounts of Druidry we have are, and also for encouraging action as part of faith. "After all, I think the world could benefit from a few more Druids, especially those in a position of leadership." I love it
Great topic, and even better timing, Tying to the Beltane celebration. Feels like ancient relatives were just here. Culture is comforting, thank you for doing this.
I love the idea of forest kindergartens for grownups. I guess that is what I'm trying to create for myself when I mess around with fire starting, wild edibles and the like.
As a descendent of Europe's lost magical/pagan societies, the lack of historical knowledge does make me quite blue sometimes. Thank you for this video Scarlet. I have found myself being drawn to a Druidic path over the past few years and am trying to gather as much information as possible about tha various modern Druid organizations in order to make my mind up
I joined the Druid Network. They are an officially recognised religion in the UK and now like the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church they have charitable status. I was hugely disappointed by them. It’s full of left wing activists.
@@noodlyappendage6729 You joined a druid organization and were *surprised* that they were left wing? I think you may have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Druidry tends to represent 🤣
(Writing this as the video plays) I'm pretty sure that human sacrifice was common, at least among the Gauls. It's important to note that the Gauls believed in reincarnation, so being sacrificed wasn't seen as a finality. It also was something that would have been done due to necessity because a tribe of Gauls couldn't afford the extra mouths to feed, so POW's, criminals, and other's were used as sacrifices. There is an academic book that covers all of this called "Death, War, and Sacrifice. Studies in ideology and practice" written by Bruce Lincoln. It's a bit dry, but it's a great resource for those wishing to understand more about the past. Worth reading in my opinion.
Sacrifice was not a big thing. The Romans made a lot up to make the Gauls look bad. POWs would become slaves and were economically valuable. The evidence for very rare sacrifices does exist, but it was usually of their own people and high status people at that.
Also, the reincarnation thing is not true. They believed great heroes could be reborn in a new form, but not in reincarnation as we would understand the term.
Good vid. "Stonehenge & Druidisim" by E. Raymond Capt is a scholarly work that suggests that Druidisim was not as incompatible with the early, raw Christian faith as most believe. Blessed be, pretty Lady! 🦋
I really like the way you presented the topic and that you talk about it with such joy and interest. :D It is a waste that there are no written rituals, laws of druids. But on the brighter side we do remember some things: they were very wise and telepathic individuals, that conversed with nature, had visions, could communicate with spirit realms, and therefore, were able to answer questions nobody else could. Knew how to heal and maybe even saw glimpses of the future. That is way their purpose was political too. So honesty I think that if you are intuitive and feel connected to nature..just go for a stroll in the forest and sit there for a while in meditation, try asking some old, tall oak tree if it remembers druids and their ways ,and who knows, maybe you just might get your answer. :)

Hello all. I am soon approaching my ceremony of initiation into Druidism. For others who might be in the same position as me or are just curious, I would recommend the book, the Druid path. It is a beautiful book that explains many about modern and ancient Druidism. I sincerely recommend it.
Read Robert Grave’s, The White Goddess. Those who claim the book is worthless due to his lack of scholarship simply do not appreciate its profound secrets. ❤️
It can be done...and there are sources that can help you to build that foundation. The Druid Network, the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids, The British Druid Order, TDN ...these are all well known and respected groups. TDN is not a teaching order and is less formal, but very Druidic. The others offer courses which can be done online and you can access mentorship. Each organizations has a different specialized area in some sense and if you go to their websites, you can get an idea of what that is...while they are also strongly linked by the fundamental basic principles of Druidism;/druidry. The strongest surviving foundation for druidry is nature and we are a part of nature. There is you corner stone.
I heard my first call of nature when I was 15 although I have been through things before (I used to be bullied and often played alone in the woods the bullies often visited me but usually I was gone I told my parents that the trees “fear sent me” i was about 5 years old then and only understood it later the first call came only when i found ern acorn when the call came i was at school i can always walk in the neighborhood so i followed the call i only found an old beech much later did the teacher tell me that ghosts were observed at a beech i was called more and more often i had also developed a bond between the now young oak and myself when one day i was called again and to the beech went I stayed there for a while (I was depressed and talked to the tree) when I left 2 deer appeared about 2 meters next to me appear we were both startled and the deer were gone I later realized that the deer had a link with cernunnos and that's how I came to the celtiche much more has happened like the oak spirit itself but then this story would be 2 x as long first more like haha
The reason is why it did not get written down is quite simple, to be a druid you need a deep understanding of whatever druidism is. Maybe these days it is finding out, yet is it? Its not time yet.
Thank you for this presentation. Do you or any of your viewers have any information about Galicia, Spain and the ancient path of the Camino de Santiago? Thank you!
interesting words. dru-wid =oak learned. The ancient british word for the wise is 'wit' as in the kings counsel was the 'witan' (there's a longer title too. but form there you can see the jump to wic as in wiccan. Celtic culture saw women as equals. Rome did not and as the celts came under the Pax Romana this equality was lost. The best example of this friction was the rebellion of Boudicca and the Iceni. When her husband died he left the tribe to his wife and the roman emperor thinking they would co-rule. but the local governor said a woman couldn't rule so clearly the whole tribe now belonged to Rome. His brutality in this led to a massive rebellion around 60 CE.
As a point of note the Witan or to give it the full title Witenagemot (meeting of wise men) was a political institution in Anglo-Saxon England from 7th to 11 century and was an old English word, which means that it comes from the Anglo-Saxons, a group of Germanic tribes who invaded Britain after the Romans pulled out. Therefore it is doubtful that it has anything to do with the pre-Roman Celts and therefore the druids who would have spoken Brittonic, which later evolved into modern Welsh. Meanwhile looking at the old Celtic languages for their words for druid, old Irish is 'drui', old Cornish 'druw' and middle Welsh 'dryw'.
@@elvacoburg1279 I resisted giving the full name. As you say, it is best known for serving the pre-Norman kings but where it merged with the anglo-saxon germanic peoples and the exisiting romano-britain celts is foggy. but by the sound you're clearly seeing some sort of a link up. or a heck of a co-incidence.
I saw a documentary about Anglesey an island where the Druids lived and I guess were massacred by the Romans . There are clearly still living druids in Wales though.
@@peach411 Time Team? The ancient druids were exterminated by the romans, as the religious leaders they could unite different tribes against the invaders so the romans moved to break that link. it is unclear how far back the welch druids go but odds are it ain't back to 55 BCE.
I find that this a path that resonates with me though i tend to spend time time observating trees and animals or working outside. Though i also try to learn as much many things as i can like what the most common plants and trees are and how to identify them accurately.
Merlin wasn't just inspired by druids, he was a druid. there's a whole another story just about him and how he grew up in a hidden druid society on a special magical island where he learned everything he knows from druids.
Some how I reason these ways need to be learned life lessin way of course with guidance, I have seen some need little attention and correct because of their conviction and dedication and others who recive abundant attention and refuse to grow, always felt getting back to nature is paramount to the great mystery, and when we do, nature comes to us, in unexpected ways, and when the winged ones and 4 legged ones come to us it's a special bonus for that is an honor bestowed by themselves,
In Ireland the practiced in hazel groves I still drive by and see them in some fields to this day . I believe they infiltrated the church brought there ancient traditions with them when becoming monks which is why you will always see a yew tree in every church yard in Ireland
For anyone wondering why there is no written information it is because they tried to write down as little information as possibly because they didn't want their knowledge to get in the wrong hands. However later one, they did write start to write some information, all of which was destroyed by Christain's. They wanted the religion to be wiped out from history. That's why many of the holidays the Druids celebrated were changed to Christain holidays in a way to stop people from celebrating the Celtic ones. For example, Samhain became Halloween, Yule became Christmas, Ostara became Easter, etc. Christain's also changed a few of the most popular gods to become Christain saints, such as Saint Bridget.
Druidry is so alluring and captivating to me. I don’t associate with magic or mysticism so I don’t know how to practice it. But I do associate with nature and education. And as we all know, cultures and other religions looked, and still look, heavily down upon education. I think it would be probably that druidry was a renaissance before renaissance. A group of people aimed at finding expertise in all forms of education. Polymaths. And that when discovered by other cultures and Christianity, were seen as a threat and heathens. Maybe they were outnumbered. Maybe they spent more time investing in their minds and schools than their military and bodies and didn’t stand a chance. I think this would be highly probable and explain their what little we know of their history. This interpretation is biased. But it’s also discouraging
You gotta watch Britannia! By the end of season 2 I was totally in love with the Druids, especially Veran. I know it’s not 100% accurate but it is an interpretation and dramatization way better than GOT. For instance they show the druids did write, but no writing survives because they only wrote on people.
The Druids did write but they did not write down what they considered to be sacred. Sacred knowledge was passed down verbally ONLY. They still practice this in India today.
Right I was saying in the show, they dramatize sacred things being written in a secret language on people which while we have no way of knowing was a nice take on it.
I’d say that it was probably that Druids wrote on people. There is written evidence of Druids painting on people. If Druids painted shapes and pattens on people I can see no reason why some of those shapes and patterns wouldn’t have been symbols or letters or possibly words..
thank you so much, i'm a children's worker with the Quakers and we have a druid guest today as part of our interfaith series- this video will come first :) can i make a one off donation to say thank you? Joe
I am a Freemason and it was thought by some writers in the 18th and 19th Century (including Thomas Paine) that Freemasonry was the continuation of Druidry. This isn't true on a literal level. Freemasonry is only able to trace it's roots back to the late 15th century and the Druids probably had probably been extinct for a 1000 years by then. However, Freemasonry takes its philosophical ideas from building in stone and from the study of the natural world and also from Geometry. Whether or not these were the kind of things the Druids also studied, it's hard to say. How a philosophical or religious system forms is an interesting question in itself. Some say that Druidry was formed out of local practices that were gradually integrated into a more organized religious system. Others say that they practiced a form of Pythagoreanism, which might make them closer to some of the ideas that formed the basis of Freemasonry much later. If the latter is true, they must have had contact with other cultures which influenced their thinking and they were not wholly insular. Freemasonry, it is said, may have formed out of lodges that were established in Scotland as early as 1483 and gradually transformed from associations of workmen into the worldwide fraternal order we have today. Freemasons then influenced the development of Wicca and other neo-pagan and occult organizations, including the Order of the Golden Dawn and the Theosophical Society. When Wiccans say "So mote it be", they are saying a phrase the Masons have used for a long time. Some of the early revival Druid orders, such as the Ancient and Archeological Order of Druids were also masonic. Hope this is at least interesting.

"Honor the gods. Do no harm. Be brave." - the three commands of the druids as depicted by Diogene Laertius, greek author, circa IIIrd century AD.

You need to make sentences, you're exhausting to read.

As a Druid, I love watching videos like this and I love seeing how others view Druidry ❤️. Thank you for another amazing video 🙏 and blessed be 🌳🍀🌸
@Lady Shadow Wolf perhaps they died long ago, but to consider the possibility of a modern Druid would not be impossible.
@Lady Shadow Wolf of course 🙏🏻 and I understand. Thank you for being so cool about it.

They were masters of nature because they were nature.
yes the key to ancient history could be in the art, but its only a tiny glimpse of what their life was like.
Very good video! 👏Thank you! 🌱🌳💚
Lovely greetings to all pagan druids and witches!

If we are to write things down, what shall we use for paper? Some ancients used clay, some papyrus scrolls, remember things decay or crumble to dust. Fresh minds are the medium for knowledge and wisdom. Each generation renews our quest.
Writing things down has been shown to anchor the knowledge better in your mind.

Thank you Scarlet. As a practicing Druid I am deeply moved by your presentation of our path. As always, your scholarship is fantastic!

Thank you for this video Scarlet. I have found myself being drawn to a Druidic path over the past few years and am trying to gather as much information as possible about tha various modern Druid organizations in order to make my mind up
Whilst the organisations are great, don't feel you need to join one. You can be a druid without joining anything.
Thank you, been in communication w them for years!! Always feeling their ⚡️ 🌳💚🌲 ty! 🥰
I am Princess Vespa, daughter of Roland, King of the Druids!
Thank you for this! I just got two of the books you recommended since I had some Audible credits!
After many years, I've returned to Druidry. Rejoined the OBOD and feel very much as if I have returned home.
Good vid. "Stonehenge & Druidisim" by E. Raymond Capt is a scholarly work that suggests that Druidisim was not as incompatible with the early, raw Christian faith as most believe. Blessed be, pretty Lady! 🦋

Sadly, the beards and robes are an invention of the 18th and 19th century druids.
I really want to learn Druids magic especially magic to heal the health.

There is no book left to science or history that can explain what Druids did. The book you recommend is only assumptions.
I would say Gandalf not Dumbledore. Harry Potter wizardry didn't really show much connection with nature only power
I would say he maybe relates to the old-man advisor archetype often associated with Druids in stories, but yeah, not specifically nature.

How can a modern pagan, become a Druid, without a true foundation???

You bring up some great points about the role of women in Celtic society. I think doing a future video about Boudicca would be really interesting! :)

I believe I am a Druidess. It just feels right.
I refuse to watch ‘Britannia’ anyway. Sub Saharan Africans weren’t wondering round Albion on horse back. I found the show to be a tad offensive.
I’ve heard that criticism but honestly, they were Roman soldiers so it’s possible, and it did not take away from the story at all.
Druidry is strong here in Scotland.
Well done! 😃💯
