    One more questions on this one. How many sheets of the 1/2" plywood do you use for a 16" boat build like the tracker? And do you attach the permanent deck sections with stainless screws thru the carpet?

  • @davidhefner5668
    @davidhefner5668 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When folding the deck carpet into the inside corner of a hatch there will be upside down V shaped gap. This is a natural occurrence when cutting the carpet at a 45 degree angle into the corner. The only thing one can do is fit an extra triangular piece to fill the gap. Take your time doing this using bothh glue and staples.

    Is the 3/16" plywood actually 3/16" or is it 1/4" that measures about 3/16"? I have not been able to find 3/16"?

    • @leetullberg604

      @@TinyBoatNation that would be almost 3/8"? Or did you mean 11/64" ? Also, how do you attach the deck that isn't a hinged lid? With screws thru the carpet and deck? Thanks! Love your videos, but it is sometimes hard to the small details.

    You should make kits people can buy that come with everything but wood and metal (things like hinges, electrical, latches, carpet). Also send them a set of instructions have a few kits and base the kits off of boat length and amount of hatches wanted. I think you would sell a lot and all the buyers would need to do is get wood and metal and fit it everything else could come in the kit except tools and labor 😂. Just a thought and you could make some money as well.

    hi new subscriber. just want to say thanks for sharing your experience. I am designing a 12' motorized catamaran (6' beam) for fishing so I want all the hull(s) surface area to be useable as fishing platform. don't want to buy pre-fab hatches due to cost/availability (living in Indonesia) and design limitations so thanks again your ideas have already helped in my deck hatch design.

    I'm sure someone has probably already told you about a pneumatic rivet gun and an electric staple gun with all the riveting and stapling you do it sure will keep you from wearing out your hands before you want to. And also with all the aluminum work you do check out an item called a cleco they will save you some headache and help with holding things together like a third hand. I have been a sheet metal worker for a long time and I am just glad that someone like you is using your imagination to do what you do. You can pick up both of these tools if you check for between 25 and 30 dollars and they are worth every penny. Good Luck.

    one thing im missing tho, is the start, like what boat you did this with, how that boat looked, and how you made the ground work for the "floor" , like , support for the floor, from the boatfloor, etc etc, if that makes sence, how you built the support system to the floor, from the boatfloor and up to "your floor "

  • @iBaloo42
    @iBaloo42 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know you have a new version with top lids out of aluminum, but did you ever consider using Cellular PVC trim as structural components and sheets instead of plywood? I would consider using a sheet instead of 0.9 aluminum sheet for the subfloor (as I've seen being done on other TBN builds), as it is cheaper, has POSITIVE buoyancy, and there would not be a need to paint or treat it with epoxy.

    • @TinyBoatNation
      @TinyBoatNation  ปีที่แล้ว

      PVC is not good. It’s not very UV resistant, it will crack and degrade overtime. and worst thing about it is it shrinks and expands with temperature change. It’s the worst thing to use on a boat deck.

    • @iBaloo42
      @iBaloo42 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for answering back!
      This material, expanded polyvinyl chloride, is used in construction for trimming houses externally, so they are OK from a UV standpoint. The coefficient of linear expansion for "expanded polyvinyl chloride" is comparable with the one for aluminum, so the end value for expansion/contraction is negligible for under 60" components/hatches.
      For good measure, I intend, though, to cover the exposed panels with an epoxy like this person did th-cam.com/video/ma3DWV31-IQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @ericb6390
      @ericb6390 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can use hdpe its marine grade and uv resistant, thats what im gonna deck mine in then dont need all the carpet if dont want it either, and never have to worry about decking it again if do it right the first time

Do you maintain the same distance down from the rub rail all the way from the transom to the bow or do you lower the line of your deck, further from the rub rail as you get closer to the bow of the boat?
