I have an 034 Super, which is the predecessor of the 036. It's a great saw. I actually had to check mine after running it for the first time to see if it was stock, it felt almost like a mildly ported saw, but wasn't. I have heard rumors that there might have been slight variations in the cylinders even though they are essentially the same. Great little saws!! Have fun with it Tinman!!

Pitting on the surface of the part of the worm gear that rides the crank seal will cause weird/intermittent sore leak problems. Least it did on my 041. Not sure but I think the 036 is the same.
That's awesome. I've been running the 036 for close to 28 years now. My current one has been my go-to since 2003. I have 2 running 036's I use for fire wood, running 20" bars. I've got a rubbermaid full of carcasses and parts, and am on the verge of building another couple of 036's. Actually started modding a cylinder and muffler, but realized I had the shorter carb studs, and had fitted a newer carb and the airfilter wouldn't screw on. Waiting on an old style airfilter and have a few of the older carbs in my parts bin. Looking foward to your vids on this saw.
Pound for pound one of the most favorite firewood saws in our area, and a lot of tree crews run those.They are for the most part still running. If they aren’t they are worth rebuilding also. I’d almost guarantee that the crank seals are just totally dried out and causing your tuning to not hold. Sometimes guys run their chains too tight and over stress the clutch side bearing. Like most Stihls they have to be sharp and they don’t like guys reefing on them getting pinched…
Well now this is a interesting video and a very interesting chainsaw. I bought a stihl 036 chainsaw brand new in 1994 and have used it extensively. I have never had any problems with it and still have the original carburetor that has never been rebuilt. I have no idea how many tons of wood I have cut with this saw but The compression is still in excellent condition.

I found an old blown up 034AV. Took it to a shop and had them put a piston, cylinder, used muffler, used 036 top cover, and a used handle bar on it. For some reason I got it in my mind that I needed a stihl 25” light bar for it and I’m promising you, it makes the saw a different animal. It is the best balanced, lightest, 60 cc saw I’ve ever used. Actually prefer to limb with it over an 026 I had
I’ve had a few 036 Pro’s and they are very good saws. I would like to get the one I have now ported as I’ve done the muffler modification but want to wake it up a bit and make even a better firewood saw!
Ah, the 036. love that chassis. Two side notes from my end: You can fit an 038 intake boot plug‘n‘play into it and there are 3 grades of anti vibe buffers available: soft, medium, firm. Yours seem to sit on the firm ones only. I run a mix of medium and firm for a smooth all day long 20/24“ setup 🙃
Sounds like a good running saw 👍 I've been running a 28 inch bar on my 362 with a bark box and full wrap. Super fun saw to run. Was running stihl bar oil but wasn't happy with how it was oiling so I tried Napa's red bar oil and really seems to flow better on that 28. Plus you can see it all over the bar with that red dye.
I can't imagine running that long of a bar on one of my 036s. Seems like it would be painfully slow. My 066 wears a 28". On wood that's only 10" to 15", a 036 with a 18" bar will keep up just fine. As the wood approaches 20", the 066 starts to walk away by a noticeable ammount.
@@nospam3409 Up here in interior Alaska, all I cut is aspen, spruce and birch so I'll never really put a big load on it. Running a sharp chain and that bark box sure helps.
I'll be keeping my eye on the 036 mod. I was running my stock 036 and switched back to my 260 with muffler mod. I couldn't believe it but my 260 was stronger and way faster not to mention lighter. Made me look at the 036 and wonder why bother???
I have a 026 and two 036s. If your 260 is keeping up with the 036, something is certainly wrong with that saw. A 261, on the other hand, will give it a run for its money depending on how each saw is set up.
@tinmanssaws I guess it depends on what you're cutting too. I'm cutting mostly shagbark with some occasional oak and locust. I run an 18" bar with .325 RSC and a 9 pin and a mufflers mod. Pretty happy with how it cuts. If the 18in bar starts looking short, I just pick up the 066 😉
Hi Tinman, I have a stihl ms290. I did a muffler mod on it recently and was looking at doing a base gasket delete in hopes to gain enough power to run a 24" bar. At 56cc's stock, it's just under what is considered powerful enough to run a 24". I've been told by 2 people that this stihl doesn't have a base gasket, and is a clamshell design and not easy to work on compared to say, a husky. Your thought are appreciated.
I have a chance to buy a factory reconditioned 435 recon 16 inch bar Husqvarna for $209 US and only $9.99 shipping. Would you recommend it. I just need a new saw for the yard work, small trees and of the sort.

I got an 034 made in west Germany that had a scored p/c for next to nothing. I found a 036 pro p/c for it and it’s become one of my favorites.

@@jarednather3541 I cut mostly hickory with some oak and locust mixed in, so I run an 18" on mine with .325 full chisel chain and a 9 pin rim.
Just got one 036 1991 . So far great . Just to hard start I'm look into the valves
.0005 intake, .001 exhaust. Use good quality feeler gauge

I have one that I built to Walker specs. Im not a Stihl guy but Im crazy about this thing, absolute monster.
If you ever file a frozen chain you can watch the burr forming on the top plate, you will see melting as you file.
The saw is pleasant to listen to with the muffler.

That bar is on the long side for that saw, but it does keep you from bending as much.
I dont think a 24 is long at all..it's all in the filing.

That is correct it's a clamshell so there is indeed no base gasket.
