  • Friday August 11 2017 at 17.57 The Perth to Inverness single track main line. No train. This is the only level crossing in the country that can be operated by anybody from their car. The road is a dead end with 7 houses. Moulinearn was once known for its Atholl brose - porridge made with whisky. In 1953 a train hit a tractor here. Back then a crossing keeper lived in the cottage and opened the gates after getting permission from a signal box by phone. A relief crossing keeper was on duty who was "far from bright (and) is slow of thinking". He'd opened the gates without phoning. In 1998 the crossing keeper was dispensed with and it became a user worked crossing. In 2001 at train hit a car here. The 35 year old woman driver drove over the crossing when the red light showed and a siren sounded. She may have thought it was safe because the barriers had lifted when the button was pressed. The main signs on the A9 stating that it is a private road were installed as a result of that accident. In 2009 a man committed suicide here. As it is a private road I decided it was best not to trespass.
