Davy Lamp Restoration [Miners Lamp]

  • I bought this little Heater from an Antiques Shop In Mablethorpe Lincolnshire. This shop was over flowing with items from the last 100 years, ranging from porcelain ornaments to old fashioned
    kettles. A very interesting shop which gave a lot of information on how we used to live. The Lamp cost me £12 and fish and chip dinner for the Mrs. Bargain.
    I knew this lamp had a lot of rotten mesh in it and I did look it over a few times in the shop before I bought it. I wasn’t sure what I would need to do to access these internal parts.
    When working on items like this with numerous soldered parts close together it is very difficult to work on one part without unsoldering another part.Thank fully I have a few years soldering experience which helped a lot on this project. I think it turned out great and I love the finished look. Please feel free to leave a comment below or better still you could Subscribe so you don’t miss my next Project.

I am not a professional restorer, Painter or fabricator and I know some of my techniques may not be upto the standards of some professionals on here. Having said that if you think you know a better way to complete these works I would be happy to listen, I will learn from each project to bring you not only a nicer finished piece but also a cleaner piece of editing. Please leave your comments below and ill do my best to reply to them.

    As a restorer myself, I am beginning to believe that the outcome is in direct correlation to the parts which need to be replaced added to the amount of cleaning and re-attaching to make the project whole.....necessity is indeed the mother of invention....beautiful work!

      @@UniqueRestorations are you in the UK? Might explain why you find more antique stuff. I haven't found any true antiques or even 50's vintage items in a long time, other than some lighters. Those are already restored and waiting for someone to buy em. I used to sell a lot of them, but recently, very rarely sell one. I think the oldest one I have is from 1912. It was very rough when I got it, but looks good now and works great. I always make them work, no matter how they come out looking. I once restored an old Ronson table lighter that had recently been through hurricane Katrina. Oddly though it took a good deal of work, it came out looking better than new, and brought a good price.

    • @UniqueRestorations
      @UniqueRestorations  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toot Tall, I am in the UK and there is an abundance of items if you know where to look. My first few items came from a reclamation yard which is full of architectural salvage, then some from local antique shops, my latest find is from a Hoarders Shop. I've not come across any lighters yet though. Regards Brian

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UniqueRestorations you could, some of the best lighters were made in the UK, or other parts of Europe. Some Ronsons were made in the UK. Actually, my name is semi-famous in the UK, my real name that is, but I don't give it out. There is an author with the same name there. And a few others with the same name that have limited fame. That's the funny part, my last name is kinda rare in the US, but common in the UK. It's Welch to be exact.
