Chordplay - The Chords of TNT

  • Here's the next Chordplay episode with 'The Chords of TNT.'
After I created the recent Headbanger's Ball episode, I randomly found myself wrapped-up in TNT's web of music all over again, and I honestly hadn't listened to in a number of years.
It was refreshing to revisit and hear those great songs, melodies, riffs, chords/progressions, licks, and solos again, and that led me to create a double-header of lessons surrounding Ronni Le Tekro, starting with this Chordplay episode.
Ronni also received a lot of requests/suggestions from viewers in the last month (or so), so here's a chord-based lesson surrounding the player you voted #2 during the month of September.
This lesson features some chord ideas coming from a number of classic TNT songs and riffs - from 10,000 Lovers and Tell No Tales, to Intuition, Desperate Night, and much more. There's something for everyone when you're studying the music from a player as talented and musically random as Norway's own Ronni Le Tekro.
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Ronnie LeTekro is still one of my favorite guitarist. 10,000 Lovers is the Tone Zakk Wylde was going for when he recorded No Rest For The Wicked! Great Lesson! Thank You!

Tekro was a riff master, Harnell was a monster metal singer (totally underrated and out of this world), plus the bass/keys and great Drumming. Killer band.

Ronnie is insanely talented. He did a trick live with multiple guitars like a magic show. Dude absolutely shreds on a level near Michael Angelo. Plus his sense of melody is so excellent.
I saw him open for Stryper and Loudness and I thought he was the highlight of the whole gig.

That was an awesome tour - all 3 bands were on fire. Ronni wore his little wizard hat and poked his looping guitars with a magic wand - it was hilarious and awesome! No one was live-looping back then.
I remember Akira Takasaki had these huge LEDs running up both sides of his stack that were a "VU Meter" and showed the audio peaks in his jams.

I'm jealous! Having said that...I saw them at a premier bar in Kansas City called The Lonestar. They were supporting the release "Intuition" and a local radio station was promoting it and they didn't even play their music! The cost of admission.....$1.02 (KY102, were the radio stations call letters). Ronnie Le Tekro did the multiple guitars on stands like you mentioned. Backing tracks were in full for force for the backing vocals. But still... it one of the best shows that I hopefully will never forget. I truly witnessed greatness that night!!!

Ronnie is one of the best hard rock/metal guitaists ever. He’s also a really great songwriter and producer. There are several more TNT albums with great guitar stuff to discover on Spotify etc. I was lucky to see TNT live in Stockholm at the Hard Rock Café back in 1988. Amazing experience. 🎸😍✌🏻

I believe that could've be very different if they would have toured America more often. I love listening to Ronni, but he kind of encapsulated himself by not doing world tours. Which is fine, maybe he wanted it that way. He is so unique to listen to, it's always a treat to listen to what he has come up with!

Sweet. Always loved the way Ronnie plays. His picking is just sick. Most folks would have to put a pick on a drill to keep up with his picking hand. Always liked the solo in Everyone’s a star. Seems like you and I like the same stuff.

This was awesome! Thank you! But judging from the comments, I think and hope there will be parts Two, Three, Four, and hopefully Five on Ronnie Le Tekro and his amazing riffs and solos. You started it! Please, please finish it! Loved your selections, but there is so much to be covered and examined. We know you are capable to the challenge! Hopefully you've heard Engine. The riffage there is brutal as well. There are some great ones on My Religion and All The Way To The Sun too. His tone is glorious to say the least. So happy you did these on TNT. We sure would love to see more. Very inspiring!!!!!

Their 2010 album my Religion is fantastic. BTW, Ronnie gets his tone by using a Boss BF-2 flanger with the manual knob all the way up and all other knobs rolled completely off. It acts like a notch filter.

This is awesome! I am friends with Tony, since he sang in a band with my brother in their teenage years. Sadly, I only got to see the full band of TNT live with Tony once and unfortunately did not get to meet Ronnie, because he was already on the tour bus, by the time I got back stage. That was the only show I got to see in the States, in the Philadelphia area.

And I also wanted to note the similarity between the 10,000 Lovers riff and the riff from Foreigner's 'Hot Blooded.' Not a direct thing as much as the fretboard work and vibe involved althogh if memory serves, they bith are happening in the same central 5th fret position. Neat stuff to realize as I did while listening to 'Hot Blooded' before picking up the gtr to attempt to play that tune again after having tinkered with the '10,000 Lovers' riff yesterday.😎

I hadn't heard Intuition before. When you were talking about the root note changes under the double stop progression, it immediately reminded me of the song Higher Place by Journey, where they use that near identical chord progression throughout the chorus and bridge-chorus. Considering Higher Place came out 12 years after Intuition, it's likely that's where the progression came from. Jack Blades from Night Ranger is the primary songwriter for that one. On the original studio recording you can clearly hear the keyboard (from J Cain) driving that progression home, but a guitar can do it just as well. Here's a good example of that with Canadian TH-camr Mark Day doing an excellent guitar cover of it. th-cam.com/video/7fvjvNExIWw/w-d-xo.html

@@MatsJonason I've always loved the "Wisdom" solo but couldn't really figure out how to play it exactly right. This would be why! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. Now that I see guitar in the link I remember seeing a pic of him with it.

How about Heavy Load, who are also from Sweden. Or Loudness from Japan? Would love to see them done.

Be sure to watch the 'Guitar Tone & Amps' episode from the Brewster's Millions of Rants series on this channel to learn more about the amp I use in these videos.
Thanks for watching and take care!
