    I don't like Soothe nearly as much as most people seem to. I feel like it often takes all the character out of a sound, even at low volumes. It ends up sounding "cleaner," but also flat and lifeless.
    I like that this plugin has a High Frequency Compensation knob. I often end up boosting some highs after Soothe to get some of the character back.

    You can hear it clearly on a phone. However, this can be easily dealt with using a normal EQ. You can even make separate bands for the octaves just like in IMF

      There’s a lot of other aspects of the plugin to be desired; there’s obviously EQ and low/hi filters, but also stereo/mono width adjustment (this one sounds amazing on widening a bus), dynamic eq, saturation and tonal characteristics such as tape, tubes, or an original Korneff circuit, etc etc etc. It’s a bunch of very high quality tools in one plugin that can be used on a lot more than just guitars. Fluff is just demonstrating one aspect of the plugin

    This has been my secret weapon, it’s an incredible tool and WAY underrated. More people need to be talking about!

    Honestly you can do this with an EQ, which I like to do, then use soothe for helping to just keep things clean afterwards. You can really dial in soothe to just use it on problem areas, especially if you figure out where exactly those areas are with an EQ first. I like to get soothe dialed in, typically way more narrow than you had it here, then turn up the depth until the unwanted noise is gone, but without it changing my tone.
    Also that bass top end needs some love, in the mix it was the most harsh and whistling thing I could hear.

    oh damn that's awesome! It's essentially what i end up doing with an API 560 Graphic EQ. this is a bit easier to use. I like soothe 2 more on clean guitars as it pokes out through a lot more. i find with distorted guitars a LOT is lost from the tone and sound so i don't use it often. I will often boost the 3-5k range with a Neve EQ to boost attack and notch out exactly around 4k with an api/notch to get rid of nasty resonances. It's a bit janky, but it sounds great in the end. that being said sometimes it's just easier to mic things myself as when i do that i can better get a tone i like. amp sims never quite 100% get what i want and i rarely get recordings to mix that are like that.

    That's neat. Couldn't you have changed the freq spectrum on soothe to help narrow it down? I hear some nasty freq's in the bass track too that was definitely adding to the guitar freq's. Thanks for the demo Fluff, always entertaining.

    I guess in that parcticular section together with drum and bass - the distorted bass makes much more interference and nastiness here :-)

    Yet some of your fav top records are boosting those frequencies on guitars. Ie foo fighters, Andy Wallace, Ben Gosse. 3.2k on a 1073 is pretty epic imo. Soon as you start pulling things out like that it sounds unnatural, and ultimately you should adjust the presence on your amp instead.

    Wow, the term "you can't unhear it" is so accurate. Crazy how our ears work. If you hadn't shown it before, I wouldn't have been able to hear it or put my finger on it quite as well. So crazy!

  • @KeithMcKissick
    @KeithMcKissick ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Should've put this one on the bass guitar, too. It's whistling like a freight train. 🚅

  • @ericolson326
    @ericolson326 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The nasty whistling I heard wasn't affected when you toggled the effect on and off. However it *did* go away when you soloed the rhythm guitars again for a split second around 8:20, leading me to believe the offensive frequencies were the high end of the bass guitar.

    Instead of the Soothe, I got the TB Audio DSEQ3 which people say is a much more versatile (and cheaper) option. Soothe definitely has the easy UI but also the higher price tag.

    I try to tame harshness with some notches or small cuts in the 2-5K area before I use soothe with the Nolly “Guitar De-Spike” preset and usually have the depth knob turned down compared to what it is on the preset. It prevents the guitars from being too neutered while getting rid of some extra harshness that I’d struggle to get with static notching alone.

  • @adam872

    Couldn't we just use the built in EQ in Logic to achieve the same result? Nothing against the plugin, it's great, but the tools Logic comes with could achieve the same results when used correctly. The final result and the playing sound great though.

    "The problem with Soothe2 is... you lose energy... when you do things that are... " Incorrect? It's pretty trivial to set Soothe2 so this doesn't happen. It's a great tool when used properly, why dismiss it? I'll be honest tho, this harmonic on the guitars is so miniscule, what bothers me more is the ringing in the upper register of the bass guitar in this mix.

      Personally, I feel like it always makes my sound flat and lifeless regardless of how mild I set it. I still use it from time to time, but I don't get why people are so in love with it.
      I think it's just part of the modern obsession with "perfection." It's okay to have some resonances, spikes, etc. That's often what gives a sound its character.

    • @PaulEubanks
      @PaulEubanks ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rome8180 You're likely making mistakes with the settings then. It can kill only a narrow band of resonances easily, and do it in a smart, program-dependent way.
