Wii Sports tennis aiming is almost entirely about timing. Hit it when it's in line with your character and it goes straight, hit it early and it goes to the side facing away from your characters racquet and hit it late and it goes the direction of the raquet. It's got almost nothing to do with your swing.
This is completely irrelevant to how the ball is hit on this game though, it doesn’t matter how you swing. It’s literally a matter of tilting the Wii remote up or down based on how high you want the ball to go, swinging the remote upward or underhand would change nothing

You literally don’t do anything you just said. The height of the ball is purely determined by the tilt of the Wii remote, if you want the ball higher you tilt the remote down and swing like normal, to go lower you just tilt the remote up. I can hit the ball with a downward swing motion but have the ball itself go up high, because the swing doesn’t change anything.

If you turn the wii remote a certain way and swing normally the ball will lift up a bit. That’s why your backhand goes up but your forehand goes way down.
I have two of the tennis platinum medals: timing your swing and target practice. One tip for target practice is to try not to break the wall before you hit 20-25 points. Once you break the wall, it's hard to avoid hitting it inside the gaps
Here’s a tip: When you move the ball from one side of the wall to the other, gently swing the Wii remote in a more upwards angle to lob the ball at the higher end of the wall because the target always appears on the lower end of the wall and wall’s durability is also dependent on the impact of the ball so it takes more hits to break it if you lob the ball gently. I hope this helps.😅

Pretty sure what you aren't doing is twisting your wrist. The game doesn't register power in tennis very much I don't believe. Hold your wii remote with your palm facing you (backhand) or away from you (forehand). To hit hard, twist your palm toward the ground when you swing (forehand) or toward the ceiling (backhand). To hit light, twist your wrist towards the ceiling (forehand) or toward the ground (backhand)
