  • Kresen Kernow - home to Cornwall's archives - hold several thousand photographs dating back to the earliest period of photography.
Here, Kresen Kernow archivist David Thomas has chosen some of the fabulous large print photographs dating from the late 1800’s to 1960’s.
These photograph prints are part of the Janette Rosing collection - from ‘tucking fish’ on the beach at St Ives (around 1900) to a view of Trevaunance cove with Wheal Friendly mine in the distance by Herbert Hughes, an assistant to John C Burrows (mining photographer of Camborne), in the early Edwardian period.
There's a stunning image of Market Jew Street in Penzance by the Gibson family, outside their shop window at the time; Newlyn fishing scene by the Penzance photographer Robert Preston (circa 1880's - 1890's); St Ives harbour scene by John C Douglas (early 20th century); Penzance photographer Vaughn T Paul's scene of a crashing wave coming over the vessel he's on. There's also a haunting photograph of the Torrey Canyon, a supertanker that ran aground on rocks off the coast of Cornwall in 1967, spilling an estimated 25-36 million gallons of crude oil.
There’s also a mystery photograph from the late 1890’s of a waggonette and we are not sure where this particular photo was taken - can you help?
