I love it when a musician goes all out. It takes a certain amount of courage and sometimes they miss what they're trying to do but it is very interesting even when they only come close. I only tried it a few times when I was 40 years younger and my hands were stronger but I still admire the guys (and gals) who give it everything. I liked the young Geoffrey Keezer solo on this tune.
damn, geoffrey keezer! just read ethan iverson's interview with him on iverson's do the math page, and the things keezer had to say about the art blakey gig (and how he first got hired for it) are really interesting. the way keezer plays the head and his solo (!!) are both amazing here.
Keezer is playing a Bosendorfer. Oscar Peterson used to play a Bosendorfer because they had models with 92 keys. I can’t tell if this is the standard 88 or the 92.
Thanks, I'll add it to the info. He made me think of Benny Green a bit (also the play) but knew it was wrong, the trumpet makes me think of Lew Soloff but also that ain't correct, thanks again ;-)
LOL, ok, I'm 53 which may look like old but beware, I feel like 30. I know such a pro from my youth because my parents did like quite a lot of different music from their own youth. Names like Lionel Hamton, Satchmo, Astrud Gilberto, Dizzy Gillespie, Glenn Miller etc. I'm still very happy they influenced my taste or knowledge by then. Art Blakey may look a bit funny but he did reach a very respectable age already in this vid and he belongs imo to one of those pro's of the funders of good music.
geoffrey keezer on piano! what a beast. this is the earliest video ive seen of him. hes 19 in this vid. WOW!
Geoffrey Keezer on piano at around 18 years old, and already so great!
Fantastic version and wild Trumpet playing- brilliant!!!
I cant describe how much I enjoy that kind of music.
What a nostalgic moment. I was listening to this as a teen!
Look at Art! How old he was in this video and still an amazing musician rocking that goofy smile haha
Geoffrey Keezer has some nice things to say about Art Blakey, in an interview elsewhere on youtube.
El pianista y el trompetista Dios mío tocan muy bien me pusieron a bailar jazz🎉🎶
I am fortunate to have seen this fantastic group (same year I believe) in Palermo/Italy. Great great Art
Looks like Donald Harrison (AS), Javon Jackson (TS), Frank Lacy (TB), and Essiet Okon Essiet (B). Thanks for the post.

Is that all you can say about one of the all-time greats-unbelievable comment!!!
I saw Geoffrey at a clinic with my jazz band last year! Didn't realize he was that good lol
That drummer was on fire
Any time Art Blakey.. any time Moanin'
MY MAN FRANK kUUMBA lACY ON TRUMBONE DONT SLEEP ON THAT BROTHER
so cool so funky
Excellent morceaux !! I LIKE IT !!
Brian Lynch is spectacular in this... as always!
I saw him/heard him play in a group in Santa Cruz, CA about 30+ years ago. He's always impressive.
so damn good!
Great hard bop
It's JAZZamazing!!
@deadend3001 I thought Bobby Timmons wrote it... wonderful though. I love Blakey!
Incrivemente perfeito!
Muito obrigada por esse show.!
ℳѦḠÅ ℒ€€: :-))

@deadend3001 This tune was written by Bobby Timmons.
Art BLAKEY October 11, 1919 - October 16, 1990 - Shared on G+ Oct 11, 2016.

🙌🏾🙌🏾
Anyone catch the Lee Morgan quote at the end of the trumpeter's solo? Lovely nod of respect. Does anyone know who the trumpeter in this video is?
Kids on the Slope Anime sent me here..
Me too... Hahaha
i'm not the only one then...
Geoffrey Keezer was 19. Hot damn.
I think he impressed the veterans in the group. Blakey seemed to like it. A good leader always wants his players to excel.
@blue47er: early reply from 'gowbas' gives you the whole line up. He indeed mentioned Javon Jackson on sax.

Un anno prima di morire ❤
@chwjts Brian Lynch on trumpet, just added to the info ;-)
sounds fuckin' great!
Where is tenor and ttombone why cut off
@kajobike Sure did, did he write Spontaneous Combustion too?
2:29
holy shit!?!?.
The better Moanin'
Listen to the one with Benny Golson and Lee Morgan
He could still band 'dem drums!
@deadend3001 No was Bobby Timmons
@kooskutsch Thanks, quick and reliable ;-)
ボップ笠井紀美子のただそれだけのこと。
Great rendition of a great tune. But I feel short-changed. Why didn’t the other brass members geta solo?
he enjoys drumming :3
@mso872 So true.
Isn't that Javonne Jackson on tenor, I wonder?
Yes
Adding to contra...
The famous composer of this tune, Blakey himself on drums.
Cool, never seen this before. But original recording is still way more groovy.
who is that japanese white collar? .... Lew !
@jaggerjazz burning hard is different from hear warming.
I feel bad but shout outs to kids on the slope
awesome anime
I'm glad I know this song thru that anime!!
Its amazing!!
@deadend3001 Maybe I'm not so fast with my words, sorry=)
Brian Lynch is a linchpin all over this reading. Art is punchin like Joe Frazier, maybe harder.
The 4 dislikes are probably from bielevers ...
Donald Harrison, as, Javon Jackson, ts, Bryan Lynch, tp
Frank Lacy, tb, Essiet Okon Essiet, b, Geoff Keezer, p
@Geepereet The trumpet leaves me cold, not a patch on Lee Morgan,or sweet Harry Edison, Art Farmer etc, He can play knows his stuff but is contrived.
Cool or what?
The pianist looks like a blonde version of McLovin lol
Too fast
Lol the drummer is funny lookin
