Cal is 100% correct about incentive structures. I spent three years thinking something was wrong with me because I hate Notion and think it's too complicated, yet every so-called "productivity guru" on TH-cam thinks it's the greatest. It finally dawned on me (with some help from Deep Work) that these gurus were selling activity, not productivity. It made people feel good to spend all this time creating templates and tables and reports and pages while accomplishing absolutely nothing. Meanwhile, the Tubers are making good money on the affiliate links.
They often sell courses and templates on their tool of choice as well. I've noticed this in Obsidian. The channel convinces you that you need the tool, and then funnels you into their courses.
Clear and concise. Used various complicated tools for few months but didn't really feel it fully. Finally quit. Now your comments sums up what was it all about.
This is the same argument people use against bullet journaling. Just because some people waste their time doing a bunch of extra stuff to make it look pretty doesn't render bullet journaling or apps like Notion useless. Nor are they part of the problem. It's also a massive misconception that using databases, templates, tables and stuff is time wasted. Most systems take time to setup but once you have them in place they don't require any more time or effort to manage. Also Notion can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Also your argument reminds me of an example of someone trying to use buckets to transfer water from one place to the next. Sure you might be productive and taking action right away but you are also creating more work for yourself if you instead took extra time to create a pipeline that would then allow the water to just flow from one place to the next.
I had a boss once that required me to open an email every week and list the bullet points in my performance plan. Every time I accomplished something that week in one of the bullets I would type a brief description. Not all bullets had input every week, but over time she collected the significant info to include in my annual evaluation. My notes made her job easier and we both tooted my horn 🎷 👍🥳
Oh this is really helpful. I used to be so bitter that I only had roughly 2 hrs for drawing (i used to want it to be my full time career but I'm clearly not there yet). It's helping me see it positively that I'll take 6 months writing a story instead of the opposite... it's not my job, and I don't want to hate this "hobby" so I'll take it easy 💖

It’s was just funny he kicked his own bucket out from under his argument. And books have massive marketing research that “game the system” to promote them. Quality of content is the name of the game. If a user or author is reliable to historically effective, they have a good pedigree and it’s a good idea to pay attention.
Finding Incentive structures is key. Apple Notes is better than Notion. Idc how much they promote it. Just do things in order of their importance (read The One Thing)
Big fan Cal, thanks for your work! Feeling overwhelmed by LeetCode/DSA grind on my path to my SWE dream job. Daily practice is enjoyable, but I hit burnout after a few hours. And after a lot of push starting to feel rejection towards my study, how can I improve information retention and refresh my mind faster for optimal learning? My current optimization strategies orbite arround heavy coffee, teas, smoking cigars for the nicotine and impatiently observing nature as sugested in one your videos, walks, cold and hot showers to restore lactic acid, music, but it feels inefficient. What's the optimal approach and method would you take for refreshing your brain and learning optimally and getting that leetcode muscles all the way to algorithm Schwarzenegger on my journey to top 1% programmer.
