Man, the idea of learning all these great techniques and quickly forgetting that when actually using them speaks to me lol. I'm constantly watching videos and reading about watercolor techniques, only to make very basic mistakes when I'm actually painting. I really appreciated this breakdown, it makes me want to spend some more time practicing the basics and making them second nature.

My big challenge is my paint dries too fast. We just moved to southern Arizona and I think we have 8 % humidity right now; bloody hot but “it’s a dry heat!” So I’m constantly rewetting my mixture which plays havoc with the hue which I am constantly re-jiggering🤪. Oh the horror!! But I soldier on. And on, and on..😳🎨🎨

Loved the tips-especially about the bead of color on your brush. I always let it run out before dipping back and hence don’t always get the desired effects. Got a little lost though about not going backwards and blooms. I do get blooms but thought it could be because I used too much water? Thanks for the great video.
Hey, I just discovered your channel. In the last month I started drawing and painting again (hadn't really done it for 20 years or so) and I just wanted to say thank you for all your great tips and instructions. It's very helpful to learn some of the basic techniques of watercolour painting. I've still a lot to learn but I enjoy it very much and I'm so happy I discovered my love for drawing/painting again. So thank you for your instructional and helpful videos - the paper series also was very interesting, too. Right now I'm using a paper that gets a lot of wobbles when it gets wet...that's so annoying! I really need to invest in some better paper. 😀

For me I work light to dark, so i would lay down a lighter color then add a darker tint on top and blend the edge out accordingly. but also it always does depend on what youre trying to do. often i mix up exactly colors and lay then down rather than layering.

Next, i've watched many teaching videos & have even taken a watercolor class @ a Community college, the way you describe here makes so much sense and I haven't heard things described and explained for instance to never go back with your brush, always more the water forward. Can't wait for the 2nd part! I've been struggling with watercolor and started avoiding it in the last weeks. My pieces became flat and boring, they don't have the transparency and "movement" I want, I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if it's because of the art supplies I'm using now
It's hard to tell without looking at your art - it could be supplies or it could be you want more wet on wet textures. Also - some paint supplies work really well in wet on wet - while others kind of just sink to the page. I'd play around with your paints on wet paper first and really pay attention to what they are doing. Here's an explain from mine - my Indian Yellow (shown in the video) I call a surfer color. It explodes out (similar to ink) in a wet on wet environment. My Shell Pink - on the other hand - sinks to the page with almost no movement. Combining these two in a wet in wet combo can be really fun - since the shell pink can act as a barrier and block my Indian Yellow from taking over a wash. Hope that helps - I know a rambled a bit 😄
@@WaterColorMisfit I use the Canson XL watercolor paper, Da Vinci Junior Synthetics brushes and W&N Cotman travel set. When I do wet on wet most of the colors don't really spread, the one that spreads the most is the ultramarine. I find some of the colors quite dull (I like them more vibrant). Also, I feel like this particular paper doesn't like lifting, much water and multiple layers (2/3 is ok, more than that starts to lift the colors and they become muddy). Sadly this is the only watercolor paper I have available at the moment. I want to upgrade my brushes to the Silver Black ones and to the bee paper. But with the current situation I can't risk order art supplies online when the money is unsure.
@@didi7074 I've heard that the cotman paints do not have oxgall in them which helps the paint flow. It basically is a wetting agent which reduces the surface tension of water which helps the paint flow a bit better.
Also, the more water in your paint, the more it'd flow.
You can try buying a half pan or a full pan of oxgall. Or try out qor's aquasol if you're vegan.
Also, if you don't wanna spend money, adding a bit of dish soap to your rinse water also helps similar to oxgall. :)
@@nerdywatercolorist6551 Actually I want to upgrade to QoR watercolors. I loove the vibrancy and how much they spreads but I'm broke at the moment, lol. I think I will continue to use my cotman set on my sketchbook and for learning color theory. I never heard about adding dish soap to make the paints flow more, definitely will try xD Thank you for the tips
@@didi7074 It's the paper. You need 100% cotton paper for best watercolor results. I took a Udemy course that showed the difference in the paper. Search TH-cam for reviews that show you the difference in paper.

Well, with the dabbing technique, i often end up getting blooms😬.
I think the amount of water in the brush is crucial for this technique, right?
I find that have the most success with the dabbing technique when I add a tiny bit of straight paint to my brush, and by this I mean - a light stroke across the dried solid pan of paint without adding more water. I don't use fresh squeezed from the tube, but if I did I would think a teeny tiny dab in paint that is of heavy cream consistentsey. You would have to do some experimenting to figure out exactly how your paints work best.
Can we use acrylic colour in following your videos
yeah sure 😃 - but just know the paint will appear thicker and heavier on the paper when compared to watercolor. In contrast - Watercolor has more of a light and airy texture on the paper. On the positive side - acrylic allows you to correct/hide mistakes! So I say go for it! 👍🏻

You know what is a Great way to practice and learn about how your paints work best and with each other? Find some simple line drawings of things you love, like flowers; a great place to look for them are in kids (and some adult) coloring books and trace them onto watercolor paper. Look up real images of the flower you've picked and try to imitate the colors and shading of the real flowers. At first stick with flowers that are one color; look at the image real close for all the different highlights and shades. Don't try to match the colors exactly (the "temperature" or intensity should be your focus), just concentrate on getting the darks where the darks go and leaving the highlights where they should be. Once you're comfortable with painting those, start challenging yourself with more true-to-life shapes. We all go through the "way too much paint" stage. Be kind to yourself and realize this is a skill you are learning. You didn't learn to read in one day. You had to learn the alphabet first! ☺
I dont find any video about how to actually run or use the brush on paper. I mean the actual strokes and how to move the brush .you know what i mean
