    They are producing their own ships; they may need to work on developing the ability to manufacture the shipboard machinery to move it to the next level. Pretty challenging country to manage due to the vast area it covers.

      @@Bayofthe91st This also applies to the Philippines, both of these countries have done a great job with the older warships, now that they have established themselves with a functioning Navy, they have a much clearer understanding of what they really need. With the reduction of the Globalized system with the USA the harbinger or security guarantees of open sea lanes / free trade, it is great to see less reliance on the USA and a new international partner to work with where shared interests are found.

      Indonesia and Malaysia should have strong navies to prevent US and India to choke the Strait of Malacca. What India says, to prevent Chinese vessels to pass through will hurt ASEAN. 80% of the ships that pass through carry cargo for ASEAN. China has alternatives, sail via Trans-pacific or BRI. Beware of India’s motives.

    I totally agree that Indonesia should not veer to one super power or the other. Its neutrality assures its safety..to a degree. Howvever, it still needs more frigates, more submarines and more smaller fast multi-role corvettes, backed up by a couple of additional logistics/support ships. The size of It's current navy is inadequate when compared to the size and breadth of this island nation.

    • @LuqmanHM
      @LuqmanHM 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree, they don't need too many large frigate/destroyer, but need a lot of heavily armed corvettes

    • @69columbus
      @69columbus 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LuqmanHM yes. Indonesiashould prioritse building/purchasing many smaller advanced corvettes (like the dutch sigma ships) if it wants to protect its vast number of islands and waterways. It can do this with local expertise and with assitance from Holland. However, it also needs a larger and more modern submarine fleet for its strategic defence.

    As a maritime country, it is natural for Indonesia to have a fleet of warships and advanced weapons to guarantee the country's sovereignty. Indonesia's natural resources are very abundant, apart from being a gift given to this country, having a very large ocean area is a challenge that the government should overcome. So it can be concluded that Indonesia is strengthening its warship fleet solely to defend its national interests, not to take active action to disturb its friendly and neighboring countries.

    A very long way to go. Just 3 modern frigates (which are actually the size of corvettes) aren't enough. Rest are very old or very small. Indonesia needs a lot more modern ships of larger tonnage to become a naval power. Its essential for Indonesia given their geography. Priority to Navy is probably more important for Indonesia than land forces.

    • @alifm40DS

      A very long way to go for sure and very slow one as well.
      Indonesian navy, Used to be back in late 1950s until 1960s it was the largest and powerful naval forces in southern atmosphere (thanks to Soviet ofc).
      Especialy it has decent sub fleet of 14 subs and quite powerful surface fleet.
      Post 1960s ? Yea well, it got neglected by Soeharto dictatorship regime.
      Since 1998 until today ?
      Owning 4 subs only, no destroyers, few frigates, questionable AA defenses on the ships. At least, has good amount of Corvettes, a trimaran class (supposed to be 2 if the first didn't get burned down).
      Even with this, isn't barely enough to defend the indonesian waters. Very weak, i could say.

      Get real. *No one wants to touch them or invade third-word Indonesia.* Indonesia is a poor Muslim third world country. They have some resource, but they are selling them cheap anyway. US wants to scare China or build support for itself, so they try to tell the narrative of imminent invasion of Indonesia by China. That would be like a rich guy invading the tent of a homeless drug addict on the street.
      Indonesia should focus on improving the lives of its people. Same goes for Filipinos. Trying to be a US proxy is not productive, US is rotting from inside.

      @@诡雅异俗 Indonesian shipbuilding is actually not as bad as you think, the main problem now is capacity, Indonesia now managed to build domestically 2 94m opv, 28 60m KCR (Fast attack ship), 16 60m patroll ship, 2 124m hospital ship, 4 LPD 134m and 1 submarine (all in 10 Years), for Indonesia that number is too low, the government already in process to build more facilities to increase at least twice the number, and Indonesia now also still building 2 146m heavy Frigate, 1 SRV, 1 Hospital ship, 2 LPD, 20 or more KCR, 2 Oceanograph vessels all domestically. The capacity still being increase because currently, Philippines and UAE ordered new LPD from Indonesia and that's makes more issues in Indonesia because they are many more new domestic procurement are being reviewed and finalized, hands the reason the government give more subsidies to build more facilities. That's also the reason why we rapidly buy foreign manufacture warship to keep up with our military procurement demand because the domestic manufacturer are already nearly full capacity.

      It's hard to ramp up domestic manufacturing since you can't compete with China. Buying stuff from them is just cheaper and faster. The government really needs to be strategic about what to invest. Besides nickel and palm oil, I don't know what else Indonesia has to offer.

    • @daviano_R.T.
      @daviano_R.T. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hitthedeck4115 the reason why the government continues to invest on domestic manufacturing is because the government much more preferred the money for defense spent on the domestic rather than foreign manufacturer, that's why the government keep supporting local defense manufacturers and make commitment to support any proposal from them if they want foreign collaboration, as for now, TTurkey South Korea, France and Japan are already making effort to not only colaborating but also agree to give transfer of technology on some military hardware, Indonesian government realize rallying only to foreign manufacturer is viewed as dangerous things because geopolitical tension and sustainability are not always guaranteed, that's why although now is seen as waste of money,the government much rather waste it for our own nation manufacturer.
      as for palm oil, Indonesian government doesn't really care as much about the EU threat, like former president jokowi said, we don't care as much if the Western countries try to ban palm oils, they already give higher interest to make palm oil unattractive in the Europe anyways, it's better to be used for Indonesian people in the first place, and because of that accident 10 years ago, Indonesian government and national petroleum we're already working together with Japan to develop our palm oil to be used as renewable fuel for domestic use and now, it already used heavily on Indonesian diesel train for power car generator and diesel locomotive, they now also testing new version to be used for private vehicles. Nickel also not as much problem since we have high reserve and the government and domestic private companies already starting to experiment to make our own batteries before foreign companies start to show interest, now the biggest country that have huge foot print on Indonesian nickel industry is South Korea and they already build huge factory for processing an manufacturing the EV Batteries itself, although local manufacturer struggling in quantity, having another support factory to boost the competitiveness manufacturing batteries for EV is eventually a good thing, China and Japan also recently start to having a footprint in Indonesia on that matter, making local private companies having more competition, at the end is win win solution, although is not really generating as much job opportunity since most if the things now is done by robots, it help Indonesian FDI.

      @@hitthedeck4115 so that's why Indonesian is much rather wasting money now to support local manufacturer rather than fully depended from foreign manufacturer if it came to military equipment, is pretty much a standard things to do if the country concerns about self reliance, Japan, South Korea, China all does the same things to what Indonesia did, long time ago before they achieve full self reliance like right now, is not the money that they concerns, is logistic. In the even of a war, you cannot relay on foreign countries, because every countries will prioritize their own countries first before even thinking to help other countries logistic.

The hull (made from Chinese steel too lol) + "make in Indonesia" label =/= homegrown modern warship
    If you have to import you will almost certainly have to use USD which means... Nominal costs and not PPP! Given Indonesia has zero ability to manufacture key subsystems and in fact is importing entire platforms the latter should be their measuring stick.

    Military development needs money, so you can learn and build, like China, Russia and the US, or at least buy from others, like India and Saudi Arabia etc. But buying from others definitely makes you no POWERHOUSE, a regional one, maybe, a global one, no way. So the best way to do so is do it like the US and Russia back in the old days, or China in the recent decades. But in order to be like them, you need tons of money to invest in scientific field, education field, manufacturing field, and more, and that takes decades, so you need to build up your economy first, especially a manufacturing based one, which those investments mentioned above would be also integrated within it, they work in both ways.

    Can't agree with you on Indonesia becoming a great naval power on its present trajectory. I say that because no country can be a great economic and military power (can't have the latter if you don't have the former) if it relies on others to make its weapons and educate its brightest minds (India doesn't seem to understand this). As long as Indonesia lacks critical industries, infrastructure, research, knowhow, learning centers, financial hubs, and the economic backbone to empower all that, it will continue to depend on others for key products, systems, subsystems, and components. The best that can be said is Indonesia owns its own destiny because it has huge and talented population and all the ingredients necessary to be, as the Chinese say, wealthy and strong, but it's a long and hard road for Indonesia to realize its potential.
