Constellation is probably the better ship one on one, but it cost is 1.5 times that of a 055, so the Chinese can likely buy 3-4 054B for the price of one Constellation. The 054B will have substantial advantage in a 3 on 1 fight. Given the ships are supposed to be frigates, I'd say the 054B is the better frigate, because it has a good enough weapon and sensor suite but cheap enough to be built in huge numbers needed to supplement their destroyer fleet. Constellation are mini destroyers with a price tag to match. It's too expensive to be built in the numbers required so cannot support Burke 3 with comparable hull numbers.
@@andrew6815 yes an extra special feature that costs the military billions of dollars in the first hand and billions more in paying the interest on the borrowed fund used in the first place. The US administration has a good habit of leaving this interest cost out of its reports. Take the Ford class carriers allegedly costing 13 billion actual launch cost 16.4 billion and commission cost with aircraft at 23 billion. Add the interest charges on the US treasury notes over 39 years and the true cost a staggering 41 billion US dollars. Now that’s what you call an interesting feature.
For every Constellation that is laid down (assuming it actually gets laid down), China has built 3-4 Type 054Bs. By the time the US launches the first ship, China will probably have Type 054C. They will be behind in both quantity and quality.

torps on a ship these days are debatably useful. A submarine would never let a surface warship get close enough to use them. And I don't recall china having any kind of anti-torpedo torpedoes like the Paket NK system the russians have.
@@hughmungus2760Not only it’s not impossible, but I would say it’s very possible, for a ship to approach to within ship launch torpedo range to an enemy submarine. It’s not up to submarine to “let” the ship approach. A sub staying quiet to avoid detection would be very slow compared to the ship’s speed. Even if initial distance is 50km, 2-3 hours later the ship could still be right on top of the sub.
@@xuansu9036 oh no Im saying a sub will take a shot at a ship long before a ship gets within range to detect and engage a sub by itself. The only chance a ship really has is if it's ASW helicopter finds the sub first
@@hughmungus2760 what I’m saying is it’s far from certain that sub taking the shot would kill the ship, or the ASW helicopter could kill the sub in the time it takes for the ship to get to its own torpedo range. Nor can you ignore the possibility that the sub would approach to within that range before launching an attack, at which time, a ship launched torpedo would be the fastest weapon to respond, even possibly be the only weapon that has a chance to respond.
@@xuansu9036 sure I guess if for whatever reason a ship managed to find a sub within the minimum range of its VLS launched torps it 'could' rely on traditional torp launchers as a backup. But it sounds extremely unlikely to happen.

2029 is FIVE years away, and by that time China will certainly have perfected quad-packing of their smaller missiles. China is also making very major advances in ASEA radars, including reducing unit costs via economies of production scale, so in five years time the existing masthead radar may be upgraded, providing full ASEA capability as well as extended range. The major advantage is modular construction, and speed of construction (which also = speed of repair); China can easily churn these out in high numbers, the first has already completed sea trials, with the second hull nearly finished. Will crew numbers be comparable, or will technology improvements mean a smaller operational crew for the Chinese vessels? ? If this is the case, then that, too, will be an advantage.
Somehow the most advanced countries of so-called "Asia" are always Sinosphere countries like China or Singapore, Japan, Korea. It is an insult to lump China's progress with impoverished and uncivilized countries like Bangladesh or Indonesia. By the way, I agree with your opinion
No......china hasn't mastered the key technologies including AESA RADAR and Missile system. Most of the Chinese Hardware is copy of Russian technology which is already outdated. Type 54A Radar is copy of Russian TOP PLATE radar, new AESA radar onboard Type 54B is 2 phased rotating Radar which looks like they're trying to catching up with UK's Sampson Radar. 2 phased arrays rotation makes is less effective against fixed arrays AESA RADARS. Also Quad packing missiles can only increase the number of defensive capability but reduced the range of missiles overall. USA has already mastered it with RIM 162 ESSM.

Thank you for another very timely and insightful upload! I sincerely hope that we will never have the misfortune of actually observing how these two vessel classes perform against one another, and that any comparison remains theoretical.
One advantage of the Type 54B that I don't think ENI mentioned is stealth. A glance at the two, especially at their masts, immediately shows that the Constellation could have been built in the 1980s, while the 54B is much more modern. Now perhaps the Constellation has more advanced technology inside, but its cluttered antenna and severe right angles are a glaring contrast with the sleeker and simpler geometry of the 54B. The latter is not just a matter of aesthetics or public relations/propaganda, but also plays an important role in reducing radar signature, especially the effective range at which the ship is detected and (even more importantly) can be locked onto for a firing solution. Perhaps reduced wind resistance can also help in reducing fuel consumption, power train wear & tear, and turbulence. Less pitch and roll means less crew fatigue and higher morale.
A bunch of European and East Asian navies have gone to composite masts, only the US Navy is sticking with their drying racks, they must be having some problems with electronics integration

Given US Constellation displacement, I would compare it to 052D rather than 054B. 052D is equipped with four fixed H/LJG-346A covering all four sides simultaneously. It is better than US Constellation Class radar setup. Not to mention PLA has already had couple dozens of 054D in service while US Navy "may" receive her first vessel in 2029. when people comparing constellation and type 054b, wither constellation take the advantage, that is the success of type 054b type 054b by definition is a real frigate, it is not designed as a main-battle ship, and will not assign a mission to perform as a main-battle ship, under critical condition, type 054b pack will be leaded by a destroyer and do either anti-submarine mission, or join a carrier task group do some air defense, it is a second class ship in PLAN, however constellation class will surely perform as a sub-main-battle ship, play role of a small destroyer, constellation class is a sub-first-class ship of USN under worst condition we all know no matter it is 054b or 054a, China will start producing these ship at second class ship yard, those even never ever produced a war ship before, making the quantity instead of quality first, those leading gaint shipyard will continuously produce carriers and large destroyers, and try to transfer more production lines to smaller shipyards, these better shipyard will take quality instead of quantity first. While American shipyard can either choose to produce frigate or destroyer, and make the choice with pain to choose from quantity and quality, and mostly lose both quality and quantity at the end the real success of type 054b laids here, it is a matured class war ship, it do not rely on gas turbines and advanced 4side AESA radar, and its ammo maybe less expensive than those on type 052d, but people are compairing these in-expensive ship with constellation class, even lose at every aspect, there is no great gap between constellation and type 054b or even type 054a, and when comes to price, a type 054b takes up less than 1/3 of a type 055, the 054a takes up less than 1/4 of a type 052DL, however a constellation class is much more than 1/2 of a burke class that is the same to 052DL and burke class, though lose in most aspect , but 052DL is exactly same level as burke class, and type 055 takes advantage over burke class

The most relevant difference is not stats, but the fact that *the Constellation-class will simply not be completed before 2030 - possibly even cancelled by Congress - due to cost and time overruns* with the shipyard being unable to hold skilled labor and the Navy being unwilling to settle for a less ambitious design, instead of trying to turn a light, affordable frigate for patrol and escorts into a high-end Arleigh Burke-class AEGIS cruiser... What the US lacks most is numbers in ships in case of major global conflict, not just a lack of post-Cold War hulls. It boils down to the mathematical problem that a few larger, more capable hulls can't defeat a considerably larger number of slightly less powerful, smaller hulls - in a war of attrition, 'quantity is a quality of it's own'.
I do not see the US vessel carrying land attack cruise missiles as an advantage in any way. The conflict between China and the USA will be fought 400 km outside the inner island chain where land based short and medium hypersonic anti ship missiles held by China will keep the Constellation class vessels to far out to sea to effectively use the cruise missiles for other than coastal targets or island chain fortresses

Considering the US shipbuilding efficiency, by the time the first Constellation ship achieves its first sea trial, the Chinese will have its even more advanced 054C ship being built.😂
One small issue with your statement around 26 seconds in. The Constellations aren't purpose built ASW frigates. They're more AAW frigates meant to relieve some pressure on the Burkes and freeing them up for more complex operations. Frankly, their ASW capabilities suck. No ASROC, no hull mounted sonar, no torpedo tubes. The only real ASW weapons they have are helo launched torpedos. This ship is such a cluster its incredible. Undergunned in almost every way that matters except that it will have AEGIS and a decent number of VLS cells for a frigate. By the time they're ready to be built in numbers im sure the Navywill change their reqs again. So much for an off the shelf design.
This Constellation class is the size of 052D, how can it be a corvette? Using NATO theory, if 055 is a cruiser then Constellation is a destroyer. There is no such thing as “cost effective” in U.S. military.
I think, the Land attack capability is not suited for frigates. For 2 reasons at least: Firstly, It takes away room from the already sparse space that is on a ship. That space is better used with additional air defense missiles. Secondly, Land based retaliatory fire would most certainly out-range anything that could be launched from a frigate. And it's only a question of orders, if that "retaliatory strike" would be a "preemptive one". (Which again supports the air defense argument on the ship). Land based anti-ship missiles With a certain speed and range would deter ANY ship. As for the Gun: I cannot imagine a scenario, where 20 or 30Km of range would go unpunished. as even standard artillery cannons could fire back over that distance. Generally, it was always a bad idea to bring limited resources to a fight, where the opponent has his entire manufacturing process. You'll run out of ammo, while the opponent doesn't. IF however we are talking about an occupied, (small) island, the Enemy has to fly in his resources, The "anti Air Argument" gets another buff. And the occupiers would be starved of their supplies. The gun is ok against ships of a certain size. Or as a supplementary Flak, But otherwise it does not add much. If an enemy vessel of similar tonnage gets to that range, a LOT went wrong before. You really can't "sneak up on somebody" anymore, unless it is sub-surface anyway.
How would either vessels compare to the FREMM and future FREMM-EVO designs? By the seems of it, the Bergamini-class (FREMM) is more-so comparable in design to the Type 054B; more advanced and survivable, though more expensive. That's owed to the Bergamini's advanced sensor and gun suite, and also her more expensive CODLAG propulsion. The Bergamini should prove faster with greater endurance than the Type 054B and her CODAD propulsion, but also chiefly the Bergamini should prove more survivable. The Type 054B looks as though a single strike below its sole funnel could render the vessel immobile, a vulnerability not shared by the Constellation or the Bergamini that have a secondary funnel integrated into their forward superstructures for their diesel-electric plants. The FREMM-EVO design otherwise looks to be a more competent and modern Constellation. The Constellation is more vulnerable in that its radar arrays are not split across the ship, as with the FREMM-EVO and many future European, specifically German, designs. That means a single strike to the mainmast could render the ship blind in all sectors, and the vessel also should prove less stable and more imbalanced than the FREMM-EVO. Another vulnerability of the Constellations of course is its use of a tripod mast in place of an integrated mast. That means more noticeable emissions and RCS. That aside... - The Type 054Bs radar should prove more powerful than the Constellations, owing to what seems to be comparably larger arrays. Perhaps it might prove less proficient than the SPY-6V2 for BMD, though otherwise its higher mounting and larger, more powerful arrays should proffer the Chinese vessel an advantage otherwise. - Regarding armament, I would concur the Constellations ability to fire Tomahawks does give it added flexibility, though equipping them would come at the expense of its anti-air missile capacity. The Constellations ability to quadpack ESSMs will also prove very valuable. - Lesser advantages the Constellation should proffer over the Type 054B should be: greater survivability, endurance, speed, and higher mounted communications and navigation equipment. Lesser advantages the Type 054B should proffer over the Constellation should be: better stealth, a proper naval gun capable of NGS and surface action, a better point defence suite in general, higher mounted ECM and ESM equipment, as well as trainable decoy launchers over fixed ones. - A seeming weakness both vessels share may be in regards to a lacking gun and ship self protection armament. In open waters and in the Pacific context that should prove less-so a vulnerability, though in the littorals and in the European context that can be detrimental as it leaves the warship vulnerable to low-cost drone and swarm threats. There is ample space aboard both vessels to accommodate ship self protection armament however, if the threat ever arises I'm sure the vessels can be fitted with said armament. I wouldn't say the Type 054B is an inferior vessel overall to the Constellations. It might be lesser capable unit-to-unit, owing to its greater vulnerability and missile armament... though it should also prove to be a much cheaper design. There are a number of design aspects that I think could be improved with the Constellation design, meanwhile seemingly the only major faults I find with the Type 054B are rooted in its cheaper propulsion. Those vulnerabilities are wholly made up for with the reduced cost of the CODAD propulsion. If I were to design a Type 054C, I would basically just heighten its communications mast and give it CODLAD - a newer propulsion arrangement planned for future European vessels, likely to be only minimally more expensive than CODAD but much more survivable and efficient. Development of a quad-packable missile for the Type 054Bs H/AJK-16 VLS should also be fast-tracked, but that would be an effort not utterly tied to ship design. If I were to redesign the Constellation, I would be supplanting quite a bit more systems - its decoy launchers and mast, its EW, ECM, and ESM suite, its radar arrangement, and even its main gun.
last I hear the DDGX program might be in danger of cancellation because of ballooning projected costs. So the constellation is literally all the US has for the forseeable future.

This is the technology is also difference now. China is able to squeeze all the goodies in a ship 30% smaller. By 2029, China will have, perhaps 10x 054B frigate. China will build them with design effectiveness, technology effectiveness, cost effectiveness and at a much faster rate. Last month 90% of shipbuilding around the world went to China. The industry base will give the Chinese a far ahead advantage. Comparison? Better wait for 2029 before doing the comparison.

The American ship is not even in the water. It faces many, many problems and cost overruns. The engines are a major problem. Design, management, business models, worker levels and skills are all big problems, Check out Boeing's problems. Comparisons are problematic because the US finds it difficult to build ships. us nav really needs to move fast and break things, get tonnage in the water like PLA nav is doing. if more of the us military was run like spacex instead of like boeing, this would not be worth discussing. imo constellation class is an offensive design, and type 054B is more defensive. I think one of the most important aspects of these ships is/will be flight operations. a bigger ship is just so much easier to land aviation on, which might be the most important aspect of early detection/defense in a future conflict with widespread blackout of LEO satellites. I still think we are going to see VTOL/STVL jets improvised on the back of medium sized ships like these, espeically if most of the US' carriers are KO'd or at too great of risk. ships like the constellation and Arleigh Burkes could either recover f35B's between a carrier and its target, or screen forward and launch an offensive. f35b's right now are just way too heavy and expensive, and dont have much in terms of range compared to the C model. what US navy really needs is an f35D refueling model like the super hornet. any future conflict is already going to be way too dangerous for tankers, and that new tanker drone the US is making is not very reassuring. that thing is too small to carry any fuel and probably will be vulnerable to ewar. it is always easier to defend than to attack.
Honestly the 054b isn't a great investment for china. the improvements aren't significant but I bet it was a whole lot more expensive. THat's why we don't see the 054b's coming in as quickly as the next batch of 054A's are aleady entering service.
what do you want a frigate or a destroyer? You answer your own question at the end why it's bigger. It's a Frankenstein, the question can it do any thing really good or just average. frigates are design for protection, let it do that job. Instead of weighing it down and making it slower in reaction.
Nonfiction actual ship vs screwup hollywood action 😂😂 And mark my words the Chinese would of course enhance their anti submarine frigates by 2029-2030, greatly surpassing what's on paper currently for the constellations lol
no one compares a ship to a ship. you fight a war as a whole unit. the more mission a warship does meaning it cannot function well in a real war, it is like jack of all trades but doing nothing special, any missile can just sink a warship
It's just like comparing apples with onions... At the time the American frigate does operate, maybe China already has a more advanced frigate too... FYI, China ship building is far much faster than the US... If I'm not mistaken, it's 500 times more than the US... So, compare it when the ship is operational, ok...
Delayed until 2029 sounds more like 2040! Could even be delayed until 2050. Especially if the contractors building the ships decided that they need more time to squeeze more profits out of the US government. 😂
china has had quad packing technology for at least 3 years (it was revealed in sept. 2021), it might not have been built into these ships yet, as it might not have been in the original design, but it can likely be easily upgraded, negating this advantage. and china DOES in fact have a tomahawk equivalent with less range, but its on their destroyers and subs (and mobile land launch platforms), not their frigates; yet.
hopefully not. A service life of that short a period of time would indicate something seriously defective with the design. Ideally china won't have its own LCS debacle.
You can not compare those ships. Type 054B is a real ship, Constellation Class does not exist. You would better make comparison between 054C or 054D and Constellation. 🤣
The US has forgotten how to make a quality medium warship in a weird way. They got too caught up heavy warship hubris and there a huge gap in their force structure.
Constellation is better but at what cost....perhaps triple the cost of the more mature 054B. So the comparison should be 3x 054B against 1x constellation. I feel that the constellation is better compared to 052D who is of similar size and cost. China can probably build 3 054B much faster than the US building 1 constellation.
Comparing and idea of a concept vs a real ship is like comparing an apple seed to an orange. Maybe one day there might be an apple tree baring fruit but today here is an orange.
Constellation is a joke and a showcase of failed us naval construction. Assuming it will actually be completed by 2029 it will not be commissioned until 2031 at least, being the lead ship which requires extensive sea trials. By comparison, and the only comparison that matters, China already has 2 of the 054b launched. By 2029 they will have many. And by 2031 they will probably already be on to the 054C. And this is just 1 type of ship. The US is building the Virginia subs at rate slower than planned, the Gerald R Ford class carriers even slower. And nothing else. The US hasn't built a destroyer since Zummwalt, which was a failure. They are relying in 2024 still on destroyers and cruisers from the cold war, whereas China is pumping out modern, capable, ships at a rate never seen before. Unless there is a war between China and the US soon, the US will lose its naval dominance and lose it forever.
The US rejected the F-110 frigate model, which is a modified F-100 to add maximum anti-submarine capability from Navantia for political reasons with the socialist government in Spain. The F-110 is cheaper and much more powerful than the Franco-Italian model chosen, as well as being a proven and excellent ship. The F-110 is already under construction and the US still has time to change.

Well of course the US ship has to be bigger. China more-so cares about being within the 1st and 2nd island chain. The US chooses to be global police...
I really do feel that the Type054b is a big disappointment, alot of the features that were hinted at during early development never made it onboard. No IEP, no increased VLS magazines, not even a new antiship missile. its basically a slightly better version of a type054a

Cost overruns in US military procurement is a feature, not a bug

One is built, tested, and continues to improve, the other just added 10% to it's weight because some error
A bunch of European and East Asian navies have gone to composite masts, only the US Navy is sticking with their drying racks, they must be having some problems with electronics integration
sensative antennas not being exposed to the elements would actually make a sizeable difference in maintenance costs

when people comparing constellation and type 054b, wither constellation take the advantage, that is the success of type 054b
type 054b by definition is a real frigate, it is not designed as a main-battle ship, and will not assign a mission to perform as a main-battle ship, under critical condition, type 054b pack will be leaded by a destroyer and do either anti-submarine mission, or join a carrier task group do some air defense, it is a second class ship in PLAN, however constellation class will surely perform as a sub-main-battle ship, play role of a small destroyer, constellation class is a sub-first-class ship of USN
under worst condition we all know no matter it is 054b or 054a, China will start producing these ship at second class ship yard, those even never ever produced a war ship before, making the quantity instead of quality first, those leading gaint shipyard will continuously produce carriers and large destroyers, and try to transfer more production lines to smaller shipyards, these better shipyard will take quality instead of quantity first. While American shipyard can either choose to produce frigate or destroyer, and make the choice with pain to choose from quantity and quality, and mostly lose both quality and quantity at the end
the real success of type 054b laids here, it is a matured class war ship, it do not rely on gas turbines and advanced 4side AESA radar, and its ammo maybe less expensive than those on type 052d, but people are compairing these in-expensive ship with constellation class, even lose at every aspect, there is no great gap between constellation and type 054b or even type 054a, and when comes to price, a type 054b takes up less than 1/3 of a type 055, the 054a takes up less than 1/4 of a type 052DL, however a constellation class is much more than 1/2 of a burke class
that is the same to 052DL and burke class, though lose in most aspect , but 052DL is exactly same level as burke class, and type 055 takes advantage over burke class

There is no such thing as “cost effective” in U.S. military.
When the first Constellation finally launch, the first 054C or the next generation 057 should be launch as well😂 It just takes too much time
I think, the Land attack capability is not suited for frigates.
If I were to redesign the Constellation, I would be supplanting quite a bit more systems - its decoy launchers and mast, its EW, ECM, and ESM suite, its radar arrangement, and even its main gun.
i did use Type 054B in Modern Warships and its quite deadly

us nav really needs to move fast and break things, get tonnage in the water like PLA nav is doing. if more of the us military was run like spacex instead of like boeing, this would not be worth discussing. imo constellation class is an offensive design, and type 054B is more defensive.

And mark my words the Chinese would of course enhance their anti submarine frigates by 2029-2030, greatly surpassing what's on paper currently for the constellations lol
Not a fair comparison. One of the ships does not even exist.
no one compares a ship to a ship. you fight a war as a whole unit. the more mission a warship does meaning it cannot function well in a real war, it is like jack of all trades but doing nothing special, any missile can just sink a warship
It's just like comparing apples with onions... At the time the American frigate does operate, maybe China already has a more advanced frigate too...
FYI, China ship building is far much faster than the US... If I'm not mistaken, it's 500 times more than the US... So, compare it when the ship is operational, ok...
The taste of the pudding is in the eating
More videos!!! We need more, I need more🌚 talk about the new J31 new footage
the biggest difference is 054B,is real。 constellation is a legend😂
I'm thinking 54bg was another design I heard about
One is mature yet advanced to be built in large meaningful quantities and the other one is non existent 😅
Delayed until 2029 sounds more like 2040! Could even be delayed until 2050. Especially if the contractors building the ships decided that they need more time to squeeze more profits out of the US government. 😂
They might end up having their production run cut short if costs keep rising like the Zumwalts.
Quantity ist a quality of it's own.
premature to compare an existing ship with one which is not even build..so for now china has the edge..
china has had quad packing technology for at least 3 years (it was revealed in sept.
"We have FREMM at home"
FREMM at home :
not a fan of ships comparison that is still in power point phase
constellation is not going to launch before 2030. by then there will be a 054Z
In 5 years china will start decommisioning type 054B probably to make room for type 054C at this current rate
hopefully not.
China will launch 054-H before Constellation 😂
um....11:25: the fact that the 054B's radar has to "rotate" to scan the sky means it is not a true "scan array" radar...
They have sent tons of money to Ukraine but do not have enough budget for navy.
China 54b can be produced quickly.
We need more shipyards in the us. China is kicking our ass
The yanks should've just bought FREMMs straight from Italy. At least Italy can actually build ships.
Everyone in the comments wants a war already 😂... like any country is stupid enough to start something that is catastrophic than before 😂
Dear me how dare anybody compare a mighty US ship (only just) with junk from a 2nd rate navy of a 3rd world country. (Although China was there even when great grand parents of US occupants were at logger heads with each other for food, in some boorish European part) and who knows what awaits after half a century. If you have read history of maritime wars you may be aware that quantities have mattered more than quality. So make your own guess.
You left out china has never won a battle -- unless you mean when they killed themselves and were still pretty poor at doing that

The Constellation class has an advantage on paper but the ship also still is on paper. 😅
Well of course the US ship has to be bigger. China more-so cares about being within the 1st and 2nd island chain. The US chooses to be global police...
I really do feel that the Type054b is a big disappointment, alot of the features that were hinted at during early development never made it onboard. No IEP, no increased VLS magazines, not even a new antiship missile. its basically a slightly better version of a type054a
Not going to watch a comparison between an older chinese ship and an american one that does not even exist ... might as well compare ihe Gold Fleet with the Starship Enterprise.
Juts one question, is this a payed commission?
Whether you want to watch is your own concern. Videos containing paid commission should have at the beginning 'includes paid promotion', which this one has. I hope that helps.

@tomaskulik80 Sure it will exist.
But they might end up building only 3 instead of the planned 20+ after realizing it is severely overweight, over-engineered, over-priced and cursed with a faulty power system that gives it a top speed of 15kn.
@@903IDFOLEY its entirely possible that the constellations come out as total lemons that take another billion dollars each to fix because their systems aren;t being tested in ground stations for any potential glitches and incompatibilities'
Every steriotype about corner cutting made about china seems to be happening to the US right now.
why bother to comment on something you aren't going to watch then?
Pragmatism 054B versus wishful thinking Constellation😂
Reality versus USS Conceptual
USA Navy is doomed..!!!😪
You're comparing something real with something fictional, are you kidding me ?
😂😂😂
hearing price of constellation it must me compared to seojong the great or type055🥲
US shipbuilding is suffering the same fate as US consumer product manufacturing. Hopelessly uncompetitive on cost and survives solely off a captive market.
