Since I didn't have the snap-in module, I didn't have to remove the vent. I just slipped the wire through the side, tapped, and done. Thanks for the video - works well!
If only picture comments were allowed. This video was so helpful. I did this myself but took a slightly different approach. I used a 3 coil that has micro USB (bought of ebay). Removed the technology package thing according to the instructions ( this was a pain) then instead of tapping the power wires, I ran a normal micro usb cable from my current cigarette lighter charger in the front, through the dashboard and through the console and fed it the coil. Bobs your uncle. Thank you.
Great video, thanks. My F32 has one with a slider but it doesn't do much more than keeping the phone warm. I am getting a wireless one in front of the cup holders.
Not sure why this is $50, the 3 coil charging transmitter pad are around $10, so this comes with a couple more wires and rapid connectors and a fuse but I am not sure if that is worth $40 more! Also maybe you could have mounted the charger underneath the main tray, that way the rubber mat would sit at the base of the tray where it's supposed to without taking anymore space.
Do you know where I can get a schematic for that integrated phone panel, I have one in my 435I and I would love to take advantage of the shark fin antenna on the roof, I also installed the BeamerTech Apple CarPlay MMI. The MMI creates interference with the GPS on the phone and therefore I can’t keep the phone close to the air vent by the front Dash so I have to put it in the center console.
Hi there! Thanks for the detailed video. Any chance this might work on a 2018 bmw M4 that came with the charger? I hate wireless charging and worse of all it doesn't even fit my phone. So I was wondering if 1) this would work on my car and 2) if i only want to put the rubber mat, would my life be much more easy (just unplug everything) or would I still have to yank out that vent to get the cables out and put it back in? Thank you!
Great video, offered parts and will be doing this! Just one question, is the cigarette lighter port still usable if we tap into it? I charge an iPad mini that the kids use in the back for long road trips, I guess it will only draw 2 amps, so surely it should be ok for wireless pad as well?
I realize that these questions are being posted years after you made the video, and I am hoping you still monitor this. Did you (or anybody who reads this) experience any issue with the phone failing to make a solid bluetooth connection with the console lid closed? Also, with the lid closed, is there any issue with the GPS having a strong connection (such as in using Waze with the Bimmertech mmi box). Finally, does removing the wiring for the existing cradle have any impact on the aux and USB connections in the console? I really apprecate this video - very detailed and lots of useful information. Thanks for helping so many of us!
Not sure if you are still alive..... But are any of the wires that are attached to the cradle you took out, 12v? I'm thinking about just cutting it (so I don't have to take off the back panel) and tap into it that way
BMW DIY Guy, are any of the wires going to the bmw phone cradle 12v? Or are they just 5v? I put my multimeter to the 2 gold posts, and got 5v.... So I was wondering if the wires going to it were 12V and the cradle downed it to 5V
BMW DIY Guy, ha. Never mind.... I just realized my M4 has a cigarette lighter port in the back.... Didn't realize that.... I can use that for what I'm trying to do
2 weeks on still can't remove the snap-in adapter dock! I like the way you stated 'your's was a little bit loose'! Mine will not move, got the trim tools but can only manage to get the just the very front slightly lifted. It's definately not moving any time soon. Any ideas?
Thanks for the advice, finally got it out. Found another way of getting the wireless charger to work without removing any hardware at all, 15 minute job once I got the dock removed. Didn't even require breaking into existing wiring either.
I would say its definitely possible, but really an entirely different setup. I would guess you would have to come at that storage area from the bottom, and likely pull the trim to get there.
hey quick question so i have a cobra radar running onto the cigarette lighter 15 amp* it has it own fuse. but what my question is would connecting this also to the cigarette lighter cause to much of a haul? like should i not use my power outlet and radar and wireless charger all at the same time or should it not make difference?
Jonahs Hernandez two other options..tap the power in the center console for the back seats, or tap the outlet that is on the passenger side, above where your left knee would be. Lots of options!
BMW DIY Guy my bad I forgot to mention I have 04 vw golf and I think I might tap it to the fog lights but it has a switch idk maybe the light in my glove compartment
I have a 2014 435i, and a Galaxy S8 also. I am using a Spigen case on my S8. I measure the back of the case is .127" thick. Are you able to have a case on your phone and still successfully charge? So the distance from the Charging element to the back of the phone will be the thickness of that rubber pad + .127" in my situation. What are your thoughts?
Yes.. my S8+ is right on the edge of too big to fit into that space, but if I wedge it down in it has no problem charging through the rubber mat and through the case.
The distance between spool and receiver must be at least 3mm, maximum 8mm, optimum 5mm...as long as the phone case is not made of metal or so it will work unless you place it more than the 8mm away from the coils of the pcb
Michael DeBroux I have an s8+ with a spigen neo hybrid case... it fits with the case on if I really jam it in, and will charge. That said, I usually take it out of the case to just fit better.
BMW DIY Guy my car is 435 convertible . Been trying for one hour. There is a module on the bottom just below the Qi charger, it gets stuck. Can’t pass it.
Thank you for this tipp :) I have a little question. Does this unit turn off when it gets too hot? And when i dont drive my car for 2-3 Weeks does this unit kill my batterie ?
Hey guys, l did not have a lighter socket in the rear, so I used the live and ground from the power to the snap in cradle, will this cause battery drain..?
Great Vid DIY Guy, I noticed on my BMW the power is always on for the cigarette lighter sockets. Could the Qi pad drain your car battery being that it's on constantly?
Doggie Mouth great question and I would believe there is always a small draw to the pad, but without it charging a phone, I would assume it is very low.
After some additional research I think there's a possibility that the car turns off power to the sockets after 10 minutes. Going to test it later. Thanks again for the vid. I'd have never known how to do this, you save me $450!
There is US case law about this exact thing and adding aftermarket parts to your car does not void your warranty. Its easy to look up. This wont void your warranty, and didn't do so to mine, even as I talked with my service advisor about all the changes I had made to my car.. while in for a warranty service.
@@brendantorrance3539 thx for the reply. I did the same but it happened again, mostly when Bluetooth is active. The Producer of the charger ACV explained that there is a heat checker in the module. ah man.. that is a bummer! I will look, but there is a chart included normally in your fuse area. If you pull that out, you likely can see which fuse it is.. that said if it isnt clear, I bet you can see which one is burned out with a flashlight. That is a bummer though, not had that happen!

Fredrik Christensen it's a matter of getting under it.. pulling the vent tube from under the console and tapping those lines. You could also tap the 12v outlet on the passenger side under the glove box. Most folks don't realize they have an outlet there.
