When I was younger, we split firewood by hand. Our price was $30 a cord, $35 delivered. We did have a large saw attached to a 1937 Chevy flathead rear axle to cut rounds.
Morning Mike I agree with you. Finding a niche in your firewood business, establishing a clientele, then it runs itself. Great video. I'll keep my eye open down here where I am. Finding a good used roller that's in relatively good shape is half the battle. Having it hauled is up there is a piece of cake.
I don’t know why you don’t sell pine for fire pit ( non heat ) burners. It’s best for creating an atmosphere for sitting round a fire pit. It seasons twice as quick as hardwoods. Easier to cut and split and is very cheap to buy. It could be sold at a slightly cheaper price returning a premium for what it is. Just a thought.
I used to blow my leaves around an around an around, but got a mulching kit for the lawn best money i ever spent . I got a ton of maple trees an leaves are great natural fertilizer for the ground . But each to there own .
Coming from a pro stand point, when you don’t chop the leaves they’re quicker to just blow back when the wind swirls in the cold months. It’s hard to deal with massive amounts of leaves just grinding them up. A mulch blade and a bagger is king Especially if you have woods nearby
Wow Melissa you sure took me back to the late 60's early 70's with the glasses and bright psychedelic shirt now if you had on bell bottoms and boots you would be a definite throwback girl
Mike, I believe it’s called value-added, firewood , when you cut firewood for a specific market at a smaller size but change a higher price. Like when you buy a small coke in the checkout line but it cost as much as a 2-liter, or you buy a small bowl of fruit instead of the whole bag of apples
I'm still baffled by how similar your climate is to ours, I live on the West Coast of Sweden, and the leaves and temperature seems to align. Maybe we are bit cooler in the summer, and since we have the sea, the snow won't stay. Love the content!
Your business plan of selling less for more also suits your limited woodlot space. I like how you’re a numbers guy, always working, yet revising, doing and planning with purpose/ intention.
Good morning Morgans. That land plane is one slick attachment, does an awesome job. You are absolutely right, if you could hit that with a compactor to tighten it up and would complete the job and last longer. With all the equipment you have in the yard you should look a vibratory smooth drum roller attachment for the skid steer or mini skid or even the tractor. I am sure Messicks could hook you up with something. If you buy a used roller that you are going to use sparingly, that is another piece of equipment to maintain - oil changes, batteries, hoses, tires, etc. Have a great day!
Our leaves don't stop falling until around Thanksgiving. By that time the Robin's show up by the hundreds. I let the leaves stay so I can watch the robins scratch under them searching for food. When they leave my lawnmower muncher cleans them up Coastal Mississippi has two months of fall and summer the rest of the time. Have fun and stay safe!😊😊
Good morning Morgan’s Here in NH the demand has risen as well.. Green wood is going from $225 to $275 a cord is what I am seeing. Seasoned wood is going for about $350 to $400 a cord.. If you can find it.. Most smaller producers also don’t have to advertise.. People go back year after year.. Truthfully I don’t see but I don’t look for the smaller wood like you want to get into. It’s probably there but I don’t see it.. But I understand your shift you want to do.. Economics at work.. Not a thing wrong with that.. Thanks for sharing your perspective with us.. Have a Day Cheers
Mike I know you like to back up with your land plane, but you are pushing against the cross member because you do not have a rear blade. You are wearing our the structural suppose member. Land Pride makes a blade to add to the rear, just something for you to consider. Have a great day, I love mine but i call it a road leveler.
Good morning Morgan's, looks like you're pretty well covered in the blower department. Blowers don't detach the lawn. A Toro 4800 lawn sweeper vacuum or a Smithco 48 or60 ride on sweeper. Dump the leaves on the burn pit. Your lawn would grow much thicker and healthier. Nice job on the driveway. Matt at Diesel Creek mite be able to hook you up with a roller.
Wanting to make more money while selling Less is why we have inflation. Hellmann's has reduced the size of their Mayo jars and they are selling it for more now. The actual primary cause of Inflation is greed for more while doing less. I don't blame anyone, for everyone wants to earn more and do less.
I'm sure Cliff and your regulars will still get the usual firewood, but I like the idea of selling less, making more. Specialty firewood. Yes, it sounds like a win-win. Again, the land plane does a wonderful job. The drive looked bran new. It would be nice to roll it. If you had a roller, do you think once a year would be sufficient? Mom's and sister's drives don't get a whole lot of traffic. Maybe you should revise your new idea of selling less, make more, to selling more and more until you can buy a roller!! Lol, I know you've got it all planned out. You carry on doing what Mike does, and I'll carry on enjoying watching. I've not bought a Jackery yet, I hope the snow holds off a little longer. I've recently put $7k on , well under, my Trailblazer. I will have no trouble driving in the snow. I just hate losing power. Mike, thanks for another great video. Have a day!!👍🚜❤️🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲
my video coming out today is also dealing with 12in firewood. I've had several requests for it and have just cut down 16in when needed but I want to have some on hand so that's what I did as well.
I’m a couple hours east of you and it’s bone dry here. There’s been multiple mountain fires in the last few weeks here. Wood is 200-225$ a cord around here which would be an expensive winter season if I had to buy it. If I burn wood solely I’d burn 12 cords a season. Mixed with coal it’s around half and 3 tons of coal. Woods nice for bridging the gap but when it gets cold cold nothing heats like our good Pennsylvania anthracite. Problem is bidenenomics almost tripled the price
I am just guessing but advertising might just take the fun out of it. Overnight sales alone would make you work sixteen hour days and seven days a week to keep up. Money has always be speciality instead of everything that comes at you. Its inventory issues. Just keep it fun for you, and yes I know its hard work
Hey Mike, just for an example, a cord of wood delivered in Dallas is $395, I honestly think you can raise your prices on existing deliveries you have because all of your machinery expenses, maintenance and fuel seems to always increasing. You're also expanding your headcount on the payroll and to offset that, a price increase would be warranted. You can always choose to give your neighbors those good prices, because they probably do things for you as well or would in a pinch, but for new customers, get the going rate! Thanks, Prosper, TX. Buy that Huntman a chicken sandwich will ya! Shout out to the Huntman!
Well, I missed a leaf cutting, but I have been busy with another project. And its raining so I guess they will keep another week. Sounds like you have a good plan.
Shorter wood makes sense. 12 inch is okay. That's splitter can possibly be adjusted for a shorter stroke. Mike is a leader. 16 inch pieces makes a cord in a traditional shape but shape doesn't count for much. A cord of wood does not need to be in a particular shape. In most locations it is legal to sell wood by the basket.
Maybe a small articulate roller you could haul with your truck & trailer. You’d probably have to put a strip of old conveyor belt down the middle for traction. But you could haul it to WV for your drive down there as well. Mini skid & mini roller, sounds like a plan.
I cant believe y'all might get snow before me 😂 we were supposed to get snow here for the past week or 2 but it just goes right around the valley we're in. Great job helping your mom out with her driveway, excellent job
Mike: how about you split the wood and deliver it and it can dry at the new location. That way you have more room in your wood yard. The people can stack the wood at their house and you can take the basket back. Just a thought for you.
Your cherry wood seems to split nicer than what mine does here in central Kentucky. When I split it green it wants to bust and splinter rather than cleanly split. Should I wait a few months before splitting? Thanks.
Thanks for the video Mike! I think it’s called “value added” in marketing (the specialty firewood). Anyway good luck with the new idea! (Tell Hunter “Hi”!)
All right I got to say it. Not a big fan of the hand on top of the block when using the split force splitter. Not trying to be captain safety. Love you guys
Good morning Mike and Melissa! Great to see you this morning before I head off to work! Great video, again! I’m off to fix some Stihl chainsaws today! I’ll catch some more of your videos tonight! Have a wonderful day 😊
Here in Sweden the amount of Pizza Ovens is constantly on the rise. Many buy wood to those Pizza Ovens is small sacks at at gas stations were the price is about $10 per cubic feet
I released a very similar video this morning. I guess great minds think alike. The smaller splits definitely demand more money. Our thumbnails are also very similar. Been watching your Chanel since you ran the County Line Splitter just not as much any more since I’m a content creator and as you know that’s keeps me more than busy.
A lot of demand not only in tje fire pit area but backyard smokers as well. That size of split you made is perfect for those offset smokers. The demand would ne in hickory and cherry and I wished I lived closer as I'd be st your place getting good quality as opposed to settling for what i can get here in Alabama.
Can the operator lower the right lifter arms on the tractor and end up with a crown in the driveway? I had been considering a plane but for a track steer. Using a tractor may be a better option
I don't think a saw a hydraulic link on his tractor but I know you can add them. Adam of Hometown Acres has that accessory to do exactly what you said. Even with a crown, if the road is on a hill, you need to handle run off. Be sure to really think it through, and design for days of hard rain. Where will all that water go. How do you get it away from your driveway. This is the most common mistake I see. A nice crown, some ditches, but nothing even close to being able to handle the April monsoon season we get here in PA.
FYI, a cord of hardwood firewood in Western CT goes for $275, delivered loose. One thing I noticed from previous videos is your standard length is 16". Ours is 18". Maybe our stoves are bigger! 🤣
Good stuff Mike. I’m focusing on bundle and cooking wood for my business. I live around many subdivisions and aiming towards that market. I think it’s a wise move especially with your kiln. Love your vids and lifestyle.
