  • Into Bassetlaw again today and to a lovely little village that I really enjoyed looking around. This one is almost the quintessential rural English village in fact. You have everything here. The church, the village hall, the old red phone box, the cricket club, some streams passing through, a nice village green, a pub, some nice walks in and around, and a good strong community behind it all.
It's just a shame though I was not made to feel welcome here. We'll get to that at the end of the video, but please don't let the beauty of this lovely village to the South East of Retford be overlooked because of what you're about to see here. I have done my best to make sure that this video still checks all the usual boxes, and I have presented it in the same way as I have all the others.
A village that has a population of 252 and has won the Best Kept Village Award for settlements with under 300 residents some ten times since 1974 should be a village that is proud to be what it is. I think there's more than just a bit of a case for that here. The church, when lit up at night for example is shown off fantastically well and compliments what the place is all about.
One of the most interesting thing about this village is the bus stop. Dedicated to something of a local hero, if you want to catch a bus here you have to pre-book, because out here in the sticks, buses are not in the greatest of demand. This is known as being in a Demand Responsive Area, and there's a few more villages just like this in Bassetlaw.
Perhaps the strangest video I will ever record. You need to watch this one to the end to understand why. This is EAST DRAYTON.

Thanks for the vid, which I viewed because I had ancestors who lived at he village. That it is on a crossroads, lincoln to sheffield, explained a family connection.

Your video is extremely interesting to me as I had a similar experience in East Drayton in the new year. I got approached by the farmer and got accused of all sorts because I was on his field (I didn't realise it was private as there is a footpath running right through it) the police got called and myself and my wife got questioned to why we were there. We both felt like criminals and my wife has had nightmares since. I hate going anywhere near East Drayton and my feelings of the place are exactly the same as you. Interestingly enough when I was watching your video I was wondering how you would get though the village without incident, the ending was no surprise to me. I am sorry you also had to experience the horrible similar experience I did. I wonder if it was the farmer who had a go at you, he is a vile man and had my wife in tears

No it wasnt the farmer, but I imagine the guy that I encountered gave me the same kind of stuff as you got. ED is a nice village, the people are genuinely friendly truth be told. I am a member of the village Facebook group and theyve a seen this and condemned the guy's actions. Isolated incident it would seem.
Your footpath/farmer thing I imagine is fairly common though, you'll have noticed in the video I allude to those footpaths. From what I can gather theyre public but there really should be some kind of warning about how they operate, and certainly the farmer shouldnt have been that concerned as to phone the police. Surely a polite "this is private land mate" would have sufficed?

You get these people everywhere. It is such a shame because it spoils the beauty of these nice places. If it hadn't been for that isolated incident I would never have had bad feelings towards the place. So it's good to hear that overall it's a friendly place. I have to say I absolutely love the district. There are some lovely areas and some amazing walks.

Any plans to hit Wiltshire soon? Specifically the pewsey vale area? One of my favourite spots in the country

Yeah just a bit shook up by it but all good now. The village Facebook group have told me the guy in question is their own Village Idiot, and nobody likes him

Must have missed this when released, just watched after hearing about it on the latest Live Meeting. My hobby is more stills photography than video but I have had the same sort of comments. I simply tell them that I can legally take any picture as long as I am on public land even if the subject isn't. i have even said that if they have a problem call the police, none have (yet :) ). Legally you could have filmed him in his garden.
I have seen you mention on a few occasions about avoiding schools especially when kids are out, again legally you could film, morally you are correct not filming on these occasions as you are likely to get a bad image and probably a punch on the nose.

He was a proper you know what. I just love though how everyone else in the village knows he's the outcast but yet he can't see it himself

I'm working on a project to visit every train station in my country. Just outside of a small station called Brummen I was also harassed and threatened by a guy because he thought I was taking pictures of him, even though I was pretty clearly pointing the camera at the station and he just kept walking into my shot to yell at me. Told me he was gonna punch me into hospital, then went away, only to come back with a bike to yell at me even more. Probably Brummen's very own village idiot. The place has been an inside joke with my family ever since.

All good yeah. The man in question is East Drayton's very own Village Idiot. I'm not the first he's had a go at so say the residents
