The target audience of this guide is the beginner who has just seen CTWC (the Classic Tetris World Championships) and doesn't want to discover how to play NES Tetris on their own. It covers everything from setup of an emulator and hardware to the principles of spins, burning, the DAS, and other advanced techniques. I've attempted to cover every technique that I could in the limited time span I had to write the script for this video, record the audio and video, and edit it, all while frequently swapping between operating systems on my dual-booting laptop. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy it.

if this comment gets 20 likes I'll remake this video and make it easier to follow, I have more experience doing these kinds of things now
how can i play with that "das bar"? i think it could help practising das
Would you ever consider a video covering more general strategies on building?
@@Peat030 using this Lua script ixbrian.com/tbook/tetris_das.lua
you can download that and open it with FCEUX
@@ender2999 it's not really my area of specialty and I wouldn't really know how to do something like that, plus there are better tutorials online already
This comment now has 25 likes, so I'm going to work on a remake of this video
Also just a note: if your NES gives you a blinking power light, try putting some isopropyl alcohol on the contacts of the cartridge with a Q-tip and then put it in and out of the slot a few times. that usually cleans the contacts enough for it to work again
Some advice for future videos: Try to cut down the length by not repeating yourself as much and talking about stuff that is not really relevant. B-Mode and music selection were such topics for example. Also the background music is too loud for your relatively quiet voice. Especially in a longer video it becomes tiring for the listener to concentrate on a voice behind loud background music.
Thanks, I'll take those into account! I was on a deadline to do this and had to cut a few corners. I had to one-take most of this, but if I had another day or two, I could have improved it more.
Also, I was debating whether to include background music, but since the mic I had was pretty noisy (long story, I have a better one) and I didn't realize it until it was too late, I decided to put some bgm in and go with it. If I had it at a lower volume you would have heard more noise.
too loud music? youre kidding... his voice is perfectly clear to hear, maybe your headphones are messed up (crossed left-right channel (or bad wire connection with ground terminal) will make sound out of phase making music louder and voice quieter)... and about repeats, its not that much of a problem as it was just few extra seconds of material...
btw Eric, good job on in depth info of game mechanics, dont worry about the lenght so much... it is appreciated! Thx!
I would def say b mode and music selection is relevant since it’s apart of the game 🤣. I think that’s one of the silliest things I’ve seen in a while.
@@croatthetopmaybe they were playing Tetris and they were blaming the sound on this video lol
Did not know about the hold a and start to get level 18. I thought you needed a game genie. Thank you
Great Tutorial! And... congrats on your first CTM win. somewhat tells me it won't be the only one.
You predicted greatness
Congratulations on your CTWC win🎉
Hello Eric, congratz on your final in CTM !
Thanks for that tutorial. I have the ness classic mini and a 4k screen, from what I understand I have some lags due to the hardware.
Do you know what score is reachable with that setup ?
some people have maxed out with a flat screen tv
Excellent tutorial... One question.... What program are you using to monitor the DAS charge / fall timer? And where can I get it? I am running Mesen and using an SN30 Pro+ controller.
Finally, someone explained das to me!
Wow the music at the start makes me think that EoSD is playing in the background of my computer.
Kaguya sama
What does the verion of the tetris depend on? (I mean PAL and NTSC) Does it depend on your nes console and your monitor or only on cartridge?
Also when it comes to tetris guys, any crt with composite will work. Don't go for the pvm's. Ctwc mainly uses old 20inch crt's anyway. so there's no point in getting a pvm since what you will be competing on will be very different. Also if you have friends or every wanna bring your crt anywhere getting something 20 inches or smaller with composite is ideal.
Also there is a guy on youtube who does rgb mods for the nes and crt's. So I would just send my nes and crt to him
unexpected touhou music~
I don’t hear Touhou music
@@OKBranflakesYT at the start you can hear what i think is the menu theme of touhou 6
Basti Kring yeah I heard it
This helped a TON thank you
Glad I could help! 😁
I tried this on my own 3ds virtual console. I didnt think it would allow a high level like that.
Hello I want to ask something, sometimes in the nestopia controls delays or freezes so I can't turn the pieces. Why does that happens? I can't improve myself because of this. I want to do last time adjustments sometimes to save my ass but I can't when the controls freeze.
Awesome video! Thank you!
Thanks for this - also why am I more addicted to classic tetris than modern versions? 😮
nice video. I think that hyper tapping players are amazing. And I need to learn it, DAS is so bad at lvl 19 because you are forced to clean so many times. however, I need to know if hyper tapping(that fast as original nes) is posible with an USB gamepad at emulator or if I should leave pc and move to NES.
Great video . I want to know which nes controller(for pc) have the same feeling, experience as the nes controller for nes?
I would use the buttons of a xbox 360 controller
You could use an usb adapter for the nes Controller
if you go the crt route, you can almost always find a 20-36 inch for free or 20$ max on places like craigslist or fb marketplace.. the nes and the games themselves are extremely cheap compared to other older consoles like the n 64. the majority of my nes collection i got from an old pawn shop thats not been able to get rid of them for years so they were pennies on the dollar. the original console and crt route seems intimidating if youre just starting out but its the best way to play the game in my opinion
Some comments about NES Tetris based on my personal experience:
- When I first started, Level 19 felt like the Kill Screen. After a while I got good enough to make a few lines here and there but no amount of practice could help me score Tetrises consistently post-transition.
- I tried hypertapping, found that my finger speed topped out at 5-6 Hz. It just would not go any faster.
- As for my scoring, managed to break 400K. I think 600K might have been possible with more grinding and better use of DAS, but I think that's about the limit of my potential.
- Practiced B-Type a lot too, I could clear 9-5 about 20-30% of the time but no higher. Reaction time, DAS control, and building skills just would not allow me to clear it any more often than that.
I mean, it's a fun game, but I would advise you to be realistic with your expectations.
Do you play on a PC Emulator?
@@paras1670 Yes, it's legal as long as you have a copy of the game
@@DanielSong39 I never mentioned anything about it being legal, I was just wondering what is your PB. I play on Emulator with a Keyboard and my PB is 450k on Level 18 start and 510k on Level 15 start. I just can't play on post Level 18 transition, usually top out before clearing 10 lines. PB of around 60 lines on a Level 19 start.
@@paras1670 It's been a while but I think my PB is a little over 400K, I stopped playing once I realized I could not hypertap
@@DanielSong39 I am pretty sure that PC emulator with a non CRT screen can really hurt the experience because of the input lag. Level 19 is very much playable without hyper tapping but not on a PC Emulator.
This video is perfect! So clear and easy to follow thank you so much
how do you customize the way tetris looks on the screen where you put that earth background?
Its a bit chaotic and all over the place, but I still learned a lot. I'm sure a new one with your current level of experience in video making would help a lot of newer players who came in after the Blue Scuti news (like myself).
I`m really confused emulation-wise about all the color palettes being thrown around for the nes and which one is the "most accurate". Which one would be the best for nestris?
There is no true answer to that because all TVs display colors slightly differently, therefore you can’t really recreate the same color pallet
ive heard in a forum post some official virtual consoles have a similar color palette to fceux for example the nintendo 3ds
such a good video many thanks
hello,Eric.May I ask about where did you get your plugins especially the one that shows how much das charge you have?
when i click on nestopia, it says it isnt verified by windows. waht should i do to make it run?
Nice job with the video, also seems like I found you outside CTM discord XD
I'm using a emulator for mobile and its very hard since it has NO LAG will it effect my gameplay?
Having no lag would mean that it would be easy
Just get a controller and you are good to go!
*Trey Harrison wants to know your location*
Jokes aside, good job explaining all basics about Tetris.I am also one of the CTWC followers from 2015 and started playing tetris at home using my own emulator. My best score iş level 15 start with 570k i can't stand in level 19 tho.
Srsly you reached level 15? I reached lv 2 ;-;
I cant stand in level 19 yet either, and i also play using an emulator. Im a new follower to CTWC and its amazing. I live in oregon so i might be able to go to portland and watch one day lol
thankk you so much, i love it!
I started on lvl 9 and my record was a lucky Tetris, now my record is lucky two Tetrises, thx!
Great vid!
Did you download free but I should cost in that case I can't do that since it's illegal where I live
I have an nes, but no crt, will the input lag be noticable on a modern 4k tv?
It will be about the same as an emulator.
Great video dude!
Very nice
i tried to inject the das isp into mesen and it's not working
Anyone have a link for where to get a console that can run Tetris?
why not playing bootleg translation version with 1,5 speed?
I must have played this a million times trying to see if the flying saucer would fly off the screen and fly around the room,..
can i use something like a retro duo?
how do i know if my cartege is pal or ntsc
Great guide! I've got an old nes and tetris but I feel like the pieces are moving late, graphics are bad and can't start over level 9
Are you really complaining about graphics on T E T R I S ?
HarrieMcRacc yes the definition is bad
Your voice is so cute! Also thanks so much for making this video, I've been looking for a video like this for a while
Subbed
Mesen NES user here 👍
but I don't have a NES Controller.
My NES console broke when I was akid:(
if you have a ps4 controller you can use that
I like it
Glad you liked it! It took me a while.
nice music
Yes.
Thx man
Thanks ! Great video
You can't say where to get the file for the game... so is it illegal to download and play Tetris for free like this?
I believe so, but it depends on where you are. You very likely won't get in trouble for playing NES Tetris like this, though.
For USA, emulation is legal. However, distributing of ROMs are a grey area.
I own a copy of nes testris so emulating the game is not illegal
@@arcadecarpet631 not true
Nice documented video. Tho wanted a bit short video...
Edit - watched the whole video. A really well made video thnxx subbed :)
Tnx
oh my god touhou music in a tetris video
6 volts works for a off brand but not shure for the actual nes
You should have explained basic piece placement and spins before you moved to Das and hiper tapping. A true beginner will have no idea what you're talking about
Some nes games have a .fc extension
the BGM made me questioning my life. Touhou
It's like a PTSD
which reminds me of another game. osu
It's also a huge PTSD, way more than Touhou
Now I am trying get myself a new PTSD. Tetris
Hell yeah! Touhou music!
intressting to hear you use touhou music :) thought i know the sound of it.
You forgot about stickspin
i already have a highscore of 513k so im not really sure why i watched this lol
I have the .zip version
nestopia blue screened my pc and i dont like how it performs i like fceux more

Where is the remake your comment got almoat 300 likes
Great vid but just a warning, you can get into trouble for going this into depth with emulators. It's a legal issue right now, especially with Nintendo. I'd be careful.
I'm not really worried about it since emulators are legal to use.
I think the legal trouble is when you provide details on where you could get the rom
Roms arent illegal if you own a physical copy aswell
this whole tutorial does not clearly state what's going on and it's annoying. "this button here, this button, well this, this button here should be grayed out if you do not have a controller. if you do not have a controller these buttons should be grayed out. If you see this screeen... You know this copy right screen you did it right"
By just audio alone you have confused me. I'm now 4:30 seconds in and I did not get any information that helps me understand what's going on just references to visual buttons on an emulator I don't use. I don't even know what emulator you're using.
this is one of my earlier videos, and yes I agree that there is a lot to be improved. I'm thinking of doing another iteration of this video since I now know, well, a lot more about doing these kinds of videos than I did in October.
Also the emulator shown is Nestopia.
@@EricICX Thank you.
bro im the only one that plays tetris in my class

Surprisingly there isnt a lot of tutorials on this ancient game lol so you get Points for being unique
But you've been talking abt a lot of Trash before u got to any Points
on the remake, i'm gonna try to cut out a bunch of other stuff, thanks for this suggestion, i'll try to get to that earlier
@@EricICX Yeah...I mean I would hope that most people know how to install a game lol...Maybe just put a download link
even though it's a 30 year old game it's still a game protected by copyright law, so I can't do that
