Did the Resurrection Really Happen? | Guest: Jeremiah Johnston | Ep 784

  • Today we're joined by Dr. Jeremiah Johnston, president of the Christian Thinkers Society, pastor of apologetics and cultural engagement at Prestonwood Baptist Church, and author of "Body of Proof: The 7 Best Reasons to Believe in the Resurrection of Jesus-and Why it Matters Today," to discuss Jesus' resurrection and apologetics as a whole. We touch both on how to raise Christian thinkers and how to become Christian thinkers ourselves, citing how Jesus asks us to love God with our hearts and minds. We discuss the legacy of the Christian faith and the many wonderful things Christian thinking has brought to societies. Then we look specifically at the resurrection and why it's so fundamental to not just our beliefs as Christians but to the world overall. We cover some of the facts that prove it really happened and answer the question of why it matters for us now.

    Praise Jesus, speak brother. I said the same thing within days of my daughters still birth at 37 weeks. Without the resurrection of Christ I have no hope but because of Jesus Christ’s death and life I know I will see her again. God could have saved her life but He chose not to, and I don’t hate him because of that. His goodness is not contingent on what He does or doesn’t do. He is good, because it’s His very nature. Apologetics is so so important for church and modern day christianity. I have been studying apologetics teachers and this field has opened up my mind to understand and strengthen my faith. Also to bring the gospel to those who dont believe.

    • @TestMeatDollSteak
      @TestMeatDollSteak ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is hilarious, because I actually think that the existence of apologetics completely undermines the idea that there’s an all powerful, all knowing, all present God who actively _wants_ to have a personal relationship with all of humanity. There’s no reason, in principle, why a tri-omni deity can’t simply demonstrate his own existence to everyone, or discuss his thoughts on his own behalf. If God _wants_ to have a relationship with me, for example, and I can deny him that which he wants, then it stands to reason that God is not all powerful. If God doesn’t know how to establish a relationship with me, then he isn’t all knowing. And if he simply doesn’t _want_ to have a relationship with me, then that’s his prerogative and he bears responsibility for the ramifications of that decision. Why would an all powerful, infallible God set up a system in which mortal, fallible people try with less than perfect success to “spread God’s word”, when he can presumably achieve perfect results all on his own by spreading his own word himself? Do you imagine that human beings would be more effective than a tri-omni God at literally any imaginable task? So why does God have imperfect, fallible people doing his work for him? People doing “God’s work” looks identical to what you’d expect from a completely manmade religion.

    • @ramigilneas9274

      I would say that apologetics often has the opposite effect.
      Most Christians never seriously studied the evidence for Christianity and when they listen to the best arguments that Apologists have to offer many Christians realize that the evidence is much worse than they thought which then causes a lot of doubt.

    • @cherylm8017
      @cherylm8017 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! Early Christians didn't spread the Gospel through "blind" faith, they offered a rational and evidentiary belief. Too many Christians have fallen for the skeptics lie that Christians only believe in a worldview they were indoctrinated into rather than one they have reason to believe. Faith is trust, trust built through evidence and personal experience.

      @@cherylm8017 - Did Jesus’s followers directly observe the supposed “resurrection” of Jesus, or did they more “trust” and/or have an “evidentiary based faith” that Jesus was resurrected? Why would a God who supposedly wants everyone to know that he exists, and that he sacrificed Jesus for our “sins”, play favorites by only allowing a tiny handful of people to directly witness this extremely important “miracle” with their own two eyes?

  • @aaronlevitt6820

    Yes, Christians are all called to be thinkers.
    "Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature."
    (1 Cor 14:20)

  • @aaronlevitt6820
    @aaronlevitt6820 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Our nation has been waiting for "the adults in the room," but they never notice the hard-working Christians who ARE putting Christ's words into practice in loving their neighbors. It is only our number that lacks. We need MORE Christians to mature in the faith, get off the "milk" and onto the "meat". (1 Cor 3:2; Heb 5:12)
    Don't just warm a pew, roll up your sleeves and help your brethren serve those in need!
    That is an ESSENTIAL part of our being in Christ, "who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, ZEALOUS FOR GOOD DEEDS."
    (Titus 2:14)
    If all Christians do this, there WILL be enough adults in the room to save America from collapse!

    As an atheist I studied this very closely. I'm now a Christian because of that research. My "belief" is Jesus was born between 3-2 BC (The 4 BC death of Herod is wrong, see the new research saying he died closer to 1 BC) and died 4/3/33 AD.

      Ok, let's start you off with an easy question.
      Why do you believe in the truth of 1 Corinthians 15: 14, when no Christian apologist has ever come remotely close to providing even a mustard seed's worth of empirical evidence to support the biblical resurrection claim?

    • @Jimmy-iy9pl
      @Jimmy-iy9pl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@downenout8705 That's a very dumb claim to make. There are plenty of atheist and agnostic scholars who'd admit that there's some evidence for the Resurrection, Christianity, and God. Even if they don't find the evidence convincing enough, most wouldn't deny that it exists. This is just a stale internet atheist cliche that most serious atheist philosophers would reject.

    • @downenout8705
      @downenout8705 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jimmy-iy9pl Instead of the strawman where you ignore the word "empirical", just refute my assertion with a single sentence containing that precious mustard seed's worth of empirical evidence to support the biblical resurrection claim.
      I am however, as confident as I am that the sun will rise tomorrow that this you will never do, because there is no empirical evidence.
      All you have is a few hundred words contained in a collection of stories written by anonymous authors decades after the supposed events and a few sentences in some letters from a man named Paul. That isn't, and never will be, empirical evidence.
      This, at best, hearsay testimony isn't, and never will be, sufficient pseudo evidence to convince me that 37.2 trillion dead and rotting eucaryotic cells magically came back to life in the Levant some two thousand years ago.
      I suggest in future that you read what is written more carefully if you want to avoid your comments being " very dumb".

      Just curious, What curriculum are they changing to and was a reason given by the Pastor to the congregation families?? Was he involved in the curriculum decision, or was that left to the children's ministry director? Were parents involved in discussions? The only reason I ask is: it seems fewer and fewer Pastors are involved in the "ancillary" ministries of their church, nor parents, and I believe it's one way "woke agenda" often creeps into the church (via worship music, sunday school/youth groups, etc).

      - 4. None of Jesus's disciples expected the Messiah to die by Roman crucifixion, let alone rise from the dead. They were all looking for a conquering Messiah. (Mathew 16) There was no motivation to make up a resurrection narrative
      - 5. Resurrection is the only way we can ultimately make sense of the suffering in the world. (Romans 8)
      (41:00) Daniel 7: _I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a Son of Man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed
      (45:17) We grieve but we do not grieve as the heathen. We grieve with hope because we know we will be reunited with our loved ones. There might be people watching this program who have experienced a deep loss in their life. The resurrection is what will make sense of that loss.
      (45:40) 1 Thessalonians 4: But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, the Lord will bring with him those who have fallen asleep
      (45:43) 1 Peter 1: _Praise be to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by the Lord’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

    The women were with Jesus very early in his earthly ministry and thus not only heard his alleged resurrection predictions, but also witnessed many of his alleged miracles...and yet they still go to the tomb on the third day expecting Jesus to be dead. I guess those prior miracles and resurrection predictions were not very convincing.

That’s not an argument; it’s just a statement about the burden of proof as it relates to so-called miracle claims.
      There is precisely zero extra-biblical evidence that any of the disciples were executed specifically for their refusal to renounce their divinity claims about Jesus, but even if they were tortured or put to death specifically for that refusal, so what? Why would the Heaven’s Gate members have all “died for a lie”? So on and so forth.

      The Birth of Jesus Christ
      Matthew 1:18-25
      18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
      23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
      and they shall call his name Immanuel”
      (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

    "Question. -- What is the meaning of Christ's resurrection after three days?
    Answer. -- The resurrections of the Divine Manifestations are not of the body. All Their states, Their conditions, Their acts, the things They have established, Their teachings, Their expressions, Their parables and Their instructions have a spiritual and divine signification, and have no connection with material things. For example, there is the subject of Christ's coming from heaven: it is clearly stated in many places in the Gospel that the Son of man came from heaven, He is in heaven, and He will go to heaven. So in chapter 6, verse 38, of the Gospel of John it is written: "For I came down from heaven"; and also in verse 42 we find: "And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?" Also in John, chapter 3, verse 13: "And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven."
    Observe that it is said, "The Son of man is in heaven," while at that time Christ was on earth. Notice also that it is said that Christ came from heaven, though He came from the womb of Mary, and His body was born of Mary. It is clear, then, that when it is said that the Son of man is come from heaven, this has not an outward but an inward signification; it is a spiritual, not a material, fact. The meaning is that though, apparently, Christ was born from the womb of Mary, in reality He came from heaven, from the center of the Sun of Reality, from the Divine World, and the Spiritual Kingdom. And as it has become evident that Christ came from the spiritual heaven of the Divine Kingdom, therefore, His disappearance under the earth for three days has an inner signification and is not an outward fact. In the same way, His resurrection from the interior of the earth is also symbolical; it is a spiritual and divine fact, and not material; and likewise His ascension to heaven is a spiritual and not material ascension.
    Beside these explanations, it has been established and proved by science that the visible heaven is a limitless area, void and empty, where innumerable stars and planets revolve.
    Therefore, we say that the meaning of Christ's resurrection is as follows: the disciples were troubled and agitated after the martyrdom of Christ. The Reality of Christ, which signifies His teachings, His bounties, His perfections and His spiritual power, was hidden and concealed for two or three days after His martyrdom, and was not resplendent and manifest. No, rather it was lost, for the believers were few in number and were troubled and agitated. The Cause of Christ was like a lifeless body; and when after three days the disciples became assured and steadfast, and began to serve the Cause of Christ, and resolved to spread the divine teachings, putting His counsels into practice, and arising to serve Him, the Reality of Christ became resplendent and His bounty appeared; His religion found life; His teachings and His admonitions became evident and visible. In other words, the Cause of Christ was like a lifeless body until the life and the bounty of the Holy Spirit surrounded it.
    Such is the meaning of the resurrection of Christ, and this was a true resurrection. But as the clergy have neither understood the meaning of the Gospels nor comprehended the symbols, therefore, it has been said that religion is in contradiction to science, and science in opposition to religion, as, for example, this subject of the ascension of Christ with an elemental body to the visible heaven is contrary to the science of mathematics. But when the truth of this subject becomes clear, and the symbol is explained, science in no way contradicts it; but, on the contrary, science and the intelligence affirm it. 24"

    Trying to understand, why does he and many others believe the Sabbath day of Rest has changed? God blessed the 7th day and made the 7th day a Holy day. I heard him say this is why we worship on Sunday since Jesus rose on Sunday, he did raise on Sunday. But like he said, he worships on Sunday not Saturday like the Jews did… Jesus was a Jew, he was in the temple every Sabbath, Saturdays. So did this change in the Bible or after the Bible was written? To my understanding, it was after the Bible was written and a decision made by a man, not God. This is the one thing I tend to struggle with is finding great podcasts and channels like this but this one thing is bothersome because I hear over and over is this Biblical…? But on this very crucial commandment, I see people have changed… I’m not a Seventh Day Adventist. I am a Christian and that is all I identify as. I keep the Sabbath as the Bible tells me to, so I attend church on Sabbath, Saturdays. And also keep it Holy and find rest in it. So this is a topic I’d like her her to touch on. Is changing the Sabbath day, Biblical?

You have over 20 billion people that I’ve ever lived on the planet, and the Christian claim is only one person out of that number ever rose from the dead, and it just happens to be the person who is the figure for the religion we believe in. Forget the fact that they were many Egyptian Mesopotamian and many other God to make the same claims exactly the same Dionysus I’m in the list goes on and on.. even Julius Caesar.
    And those beliefs were based on claims and stories that were passed on exactly the same as Christianity literally zero difference, but somehow this is the story that is true of all those now the others are just this one. The evidence is the testimony of people that lived over 2000 years ago, written testimony, decades, or more after it happened.
