Backpacking During The Coronavirus Pandemic | Lake Vesuvius, Wayne National Forest

- Andy and I couldn't take it anymore - we had to get outside, if even for just one night. Luckily, here in Ohio Wayne National Forest was still open for dispersed camping (aka "backpacking"). So we got out and took advantage.
We loaded up the LiteAF packs and headed down south to one of our favorite spots - Lake Vesuvius. This area offers dozens of miles of trails, and several picturesque campsites that overlook the lake, with plenty of camping amenitites. We ended up finding what might be the best campsite in all of Ohio that we've found.
We spend one night camping on a ridge right above the lake, cooking great food and enjoying just simply being able to get outside.

So jealous. The mountains are calling... but they are all closed. Even the AT is shut down. A few people tried to hike by Neels Gap. Came back and their cars were towed. I cant wait till GA opens back up. Stay safe!

Just got back from an overnighter, a MUCH NEEDED overnighter! Glad you guys got out and got a chance to try out the stove and coffee. I'm still trying to figure this drone stuff out!
Nice campsite! Here in PA the Allegheny National Forrest trails are still open as well. Heading out this weekend. Like the shaken, not stirred.

Nice to see you guys found a way to get out. Quality campsite and warmer temps spring is finally here. Thankfully in Eastern PA they have only closed what they needed to. Nice to see the National forest is still an option for anyone in your area.

Brings back so many great memories. I live in Huntington and when my children were little we spent every Sunday there at the beech and when we were there ready to go home my husband would take the children and I would walk the trail and meet him. I remember there was a gooseberry vine and it was the only place I had ever seen them except on our farm.

Vesuvius is Ohio's hidden gem for sure. Took the wife and dog last fall and listened to distinct coyote packs tearing each other apart around the lake interrupted about 4 am by the largest tree-fall I've ever heard. Huge tree, top of ridge to edge of lake with lots of timber in between. Coyotes silent after that--holding ACME signs that said "Oh Sh#T". Thanks for the tip on a new site, Schills!

First guy goes up hill - no poles. Second guy goes up hill, carries poles...🤔 😁 There are a couple of Management Areas in Rhode island, one of which has a single "primitive campsite" area. Maybe I should plan an overnight hang. There's only one small tree in my yard, and it isn't the same 😔. I'm back to work for now 👍. KAFGTS! Have you guys tried the Hyke and Byke hammock bags? I've been using something that I cobbled together years ago which is similar, but it's getting tired. I'm used to a short hammock, straight lay. It saves a bit of weight, especially in winter, when I just bring a 1lb. summer bag inside as a top quilt.

And yes we started on the Lakeshore trail did extremely large loop on the back side met back up on the middle at the very end and then back up to the Lakeshore trail back to the car so basically we did a gigantic figure 8
I just popped out with my brother for an overnighter at the panther den loop in Shawnee NF in Southern IL. It was a great weekend here too. It's nice to find a great off-trail campsite like that. Add a small spring and it would be perfect, heh.
Yes! water would be excellent. We had plenty but that's the only downfall
I have that same MSR skillet. Its amazing.
So far so good, but I scratched up the non-stick coating this weekend, hopefully it still works ok

That band of redbud trees flowering in the middle of the drone footage at 3:30 is enough proof of spring for me.
I have a beautiful redbud at a house in the Wayne National Forest. Just started going down there to mow last week and the redbud had already bloomed and was wilting.

Just wondering if you guys have been out recently? I'm trying to find places to hike in Ohio that aren't crowded (trying to social distance).
Hard not to be a hater when I have already missed 2 backpacking trips. Glad you guys found a way. Unfortunately Lake Vesuvius will have 10,000 backpackers there tomorrow, so I can't go there. I will find a place though.
KEITH MORRIS I had the same exact thought. I was planning on backpacking there next week and then saw this video today... now Vesuvius is going to be swamped for the foreseeable future. Lol
Lots of day hikers for sure. If you avoid the lakeshore trail you should be good and stick to the backpackers loop
@@SchillBrothersOutdoors I cancelled a Zaleski trip in March. Is the State Forest open there as well? It is much closer than Vesuvius. I am concerned that there will be a state presence there to prevent me from getting on trail.
Planning on heading there next weekend - are ticks an issue out there this time of year?

Are you able to filter the water there? I've been reading you cant due to the fracking but then also read that you can as long as you treat it?

Have you guys ever backpacked any of the atv or bridle trails in wayne? Or known someone who has? I know they are open to backpackers and was just wondering if they are worth it.

I thought the forest was opened? They just closed recreational facilities and restrooms. Overnight camping is only closed to Ottawa and Hiawatha forests from what I have researched.
Matt Bundt I remember reading that included campsites. So I guess I read it as no overnight camping

So far so good, need to pitch it higher though, still don't have it setup correctly

What is your take on the water in Wayne NF? I have a trip planned to go down there soon and I'm seeing conflicting information on the streams being contaminated with Heavy Metals from Mining operations in the past. Do you guys filter stream water or pack extra water in when you backpack there?

Did Zaleski this past Sat to Sun. Just 2.1 mile in on the South loop to campsite D. Just a solo covid hike. Ohio state park backpacking campsites remain open. The group sites and campgrounds are closed. Looking at going back up to the smaller trails at Tar Hollow near Zaleski. Any experience there?

Hey y'all, Another Ohio boy here. what is the water situation at Lake Vesuvius? ive read that water needs to be cached because the streams are contaminated from fracking
I have not heard that. We've filtered water from the lake and steams there.

Any recommendations where to disperse camp in wayne national forest? I'm going friday, and have no idea where to camp. Wed like to be kinda close to the car (dont wanna hike in) and perhaps by a body of water, please help!!
Nice video! I’m just south of Cleveland, but thankfully outside of cuyahoga county. I’m going to have to check out that lake. Some of what I was reading on it said you cannot filter the water and to pack it in. Since u guys r local experts, is there truth to that?
I have yet to hear that (someone else commented on that). We have in the past filtered water there.

Not really TBH. We also were looking into that. You could make a few places work, but honestly it doesnt have great options.
