Don, sorry to hear about your tinnitus. If it's any encouragement, if you're like I am, you'll eventually get used to it in the sense that it won't be such an emotional downer. I've taken comfort in that I still have reasonably good hearing. Like yours, my tinnitus includes also the sound similar to katydids. Occasionally I use the White Noise Lite app. You can scroll through the sound options and see which ones best mask your tinnitus. All the best, Bill. BTW my family and I lived in Cotacachi 2010 to 2012.
I have tinnitus and doctor through the VA also. I also use hearing aids (obtained through the VA)that are corrected for tinnitus. When I got those I was given a white noise machine. I use it when I sleep and it eliminates about 90% of the noise. Helps me sleep (also helps with outside noise too). It's a Sound Oasis Tinnitus Sound Therapy System (BST-100-ADCO). Was told there's nothing that can be done for it. I've had this for over 15 years. Good luck!!!
I've attended too many concerts and raves over the years, plus I spent a lot of time listening to music in headphones, so I have been having constant tinnitus for years now. It sounds like cicadas to me. In fact, when I'm on a trail and there are cicadas doing their thing, my friends can hear them, but I only hear the ones in my head. Most hours of the day I don't notice the tinnitus, but if I listen for it, it is definitely there, and has been the whole time. Doctors and articles tell me it isn't really curable, but there are ways to train yourself to disregard it, which it seems to be what I am kind-of naturally already doing. I avoid loud places if I can, as extended exposure to loud noise can exacerbate my tinnitus for a few days. I use audiophile earplugs at concerts. I take a dose of ginkgo-biloba every morning, and I notice that If I miss a few days of that the tinnitus ramps up. I tried some hearing aids and they had a built-in tinnitus therapy, but it was just some noise to layer over the tinnitus, so that seemed counter productive. Plus the amplification provided by the hearing aids actually exacerbated my tinnitus. There is a new device that trains one's brain away from noticing one's tinnitus by providing electrical impulses to one's tongue while listening to certain sounds. It is expensive in the US and not covered by most insurance here, but maybe it is more reasonable in Ecuador if they have it. Supposedly that device works pretty well. Hopefully your tinnitus might go away as quickly as it came, or if it doesn't, I hope you can get to then place I am at where you can disregard it. Good luck! And thank you for all the valuable info about retirement to Ecuador that you have provided me for years.
Hi Don, this is Jason's wife, I have lived with tinnitus for a long time along with some hearing loss. Mine is a constant tone, my dad said his sounded like crickets. I have heard that hearing aids may help. I saw an Ear, nose and throat doc and he said there was nothing he could do. I did a hearing test and I tried hearing aids which some say help but I didn't want to hear the clock ticking that loudly or hear the hubby chew and breathe that loudly. LOL Hopefully yours will go away but in the mean time, we use Distant Thunderstorm on our Alexa at night. Just tell her to loop it if you like the noise, if not ask her for sleep sounds. Find something that relaxes you. They do have many videos with sounds, too. Music during the day or just focusing on keeping busy. I also found that sitting on a balcony and watching the ocean helped. Maybe it was something to do with the noise of the wind. Distraction is your best bet.
Hoping it is only temporary. I have had this is one ear due to an accident, for 40 plus years. Never goes away, I have just learned to block it out of my attention.
Hello Don, sorry to hear that you’re experiencing this issue. It’s a good chance that you have a vitamin/mineral deficiency. Sometimes tapping lightly on the back of your head will temporarily relieve it. I experience this as well.
My wife has had a long battle with Tinnitus and she finally found huge relief with a holistic remedy. It seemed none of the Western approaches helped or could even explain the cause. She simply puts warm, sesame oil gently in ear before sleeping as a regiment. Apparently it helps to nourish and strengthen inner ear tissue. It is not overnight but it knocked it out after a while. Each night it got better. She is studying to become a Doctor of Ayurveda. Oh, she also takes Ashwagandha which is a herb that has been shown to ease the symptoms of Tinnitus.
@@DonShader yes she uses a dropper a few drops in each ear and gently massages it in. I asked he more about it and she said it was not an overnight fix but a slow and steady response to what had been driving her crazy for years. She said now she only does so once or twice a week vs every night in the beginning .
Have looked for cures for tinnitus because of having it all the time, though not with high volume. Heard it can be caused by noise, specifically of motorcycles. Mine may have started in Iquitos. You might try a quiet place for a while, if possible. I think it would be wise to look at the vitamin/mineral deficiency aspect as well. Can't hurt! Years ago I went to a therapist who did cranio-sacral therapy and she told me she had a client who was about to end it all because of the noise in his head but she was able to help him get rid of it. So, cranio-sacral therapy, if available, would be something to try. You might also go see a chiropractor in case there is some kind of nerve pressure or alignment or something like that. Best wishes for you getting rid of the noise.
We have a horrednous problem in this city with motorcycle noise. The boys like riding around with no mufflers because, well the Ecuadorians just love their noise.
American Tinnitus Association. They also have support groups, coping tips, and a newsletter. IMO, you need a thorough workup to rule out causes like a stroke, metabolic disorder, hearing loss from aging, medication, and just a myriad of reasons. Don, I had this problem for several months last year, had a workup, saw specialists, and no cause was diagnosed. It did go away earlier this year. I don't know why, but I hope it doesn't return. It can be maddening, but please don't give up hope.
So sorry about this! I have a few friends with tinnitus and we're going crazy at the beginning 😢 but they said with time in they got used to it. Same with floaters in their eyes. With time they get used to it? 😢
My son an Iraq veteran got in the army the covid vaccine then he got phobic to the light to the extreme it makes him anxious and depressed. It makes ticks also. He lives in a dark room. Not caring of anything making me very sad. He was discharged with 'honors" but never recognized it was the vaccine in the army. Di can't work in the computer. The light bothers him and not disability. Thanks God and my prayers we going Primary health care who is helping us. I say us because I am old retired mother is helping him. He's my priority. He's my baby boy for ever. God is working. I KNOW!
I have "deadphones" I wear when i take out the recycling- I didn't use them today, and my ears are ringing like a banshee. That was dumb. I've had tinnitus all my life I believe, but in my sixties they've been ringing louder and driving me crazy. Abstaining from alcohol will settle them down a bit; good quality deadphones around racket will help.(don't ever listen to the clank of bottles)(ever). Tried those you tube sites with all these frequency noises playing...made mine worse when i woke up. I sleep with any talk show I can find, in the background,or international news, or you tube vids that go on for hours.. It's inside your head Don, where no one can get to - subsequently, there is no cure. You're new to it; I can't imagine going from silence to this hell overnight. I do vary my supplements so try that, but it does it's thing on its own. Sometimes one ear will just raise up in volume and frequency....and i'm just sitting there. No control knobs. No off switch.
my dad also lives in ecuador and when ever he gets that buzzing sound he takes Cetralon Cefadroxilo it comes in a box of 20 pills 500mg he said is an ear infection thats why the buzzing hope that helps god bless
I've had tinnitus for a few years. For me it is like a white noise in my head at all times. However, recently I've pretty much got it under control. It seems to be related to what I eat. I have been losing weight these past few months by doing carnivore/keto but now and then I fall off the wagon and go to town on chips, bread, and candy. But as weird as it sounds, I've noticed the tinnitus return when I eat terribly but then it goes away after about 3 days back on carnivore. I suspect in my case tinnitus is a sign of high blood sugar. For me though, it really does go away if I just stick to eating carnivore (eggs, meat, sour cream), and it just a few days at that. I suggest you might want to experiment with carnivore so see if it works for you.
WOW DON, HOPE THEY FIND A SOLUTION FOR THIS,,,i have severe vertigo for the last few yrs..also some days i get a feeling of half blockage in my left ear...sometimes after an episode it takes half a day to feel ok...been to heart drs, neurosurgeons, regular dr ..ent..etc for the last yr and a half..they just did a comprehensive test called vng...still doesnt resolve the issues but i was turned on to taking magnesium supplements and it has helped calm it down,,,occassionally i do get ringing also....stay safe
I would ask the pharmacist what you should take for the symptoms. They may tell you to get to the cause of the problem by getting an MRI. Your regular doctor would probably write you a prescription for an MRI so you can get to the cause of the problem. I would not depend on the va. I used the va in Houston and I believe I got very lucky because of my primary care doctor insisting that they take my MRI seriously and I had brain surgery the next day and they successfully made me better. If not for the primary care doctor and a 3 year old MRI I had with them, the va would have ignored me. I’m trying to use my Medicare and I get ignored and the va seems to ignore my MRIs. I watch videos from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia. I think about going there to get help. Then I think about the people that didn’t live to tell people how it was for them.
@@DonShader yes it was- I had bad tiredness and I could get out to do groceries when taking ibuprofen for 6 months. Then I couldn’t walk for a couple of hours a day. I never thought I would need brain surgery and I only hoped it wouldn’t cause life long problems. I was so happy to be alive and healthy and able to spend my savings. The story is for the doctors wanting to help. Now I’m looking for clarity that there isn’t anything on an MRI. Just a state side doctor/VA story. Good luck and I hope you can get some good help.
I've had ear issues on and off for many years. I find that taking Sudafed works for me, (the one that you need to get from the pharmacist, not Over The Counter). In the US, the gov. made pharmacies keep the Sudafed behind the counter. You don't need a prescription for it, but you have show Id to get it, because people make crack with it. I assume they need to use a lot of Sudafed, so you're only allowed to buy so many in a month. . It has to have Pseudoephedrine in it. A doctor recommended this to me 40 years ago, after I flew and then both my ears were messed up for over a month. Whenever I fly, I take a Sudafed before flying, and have never had an issue like before. Check with your Doctor to make sure it won't interfere with any of your medications, it probably won't. I swear by it. I always travel with it and always keep in on hand. Sometimes I don't take any for weeks, but then my ear starts messing up. Humidity also affects my ears, and Sudafed solves it. Good luck.
