Don Shader - Grumpy Old Gringo
Ecuador
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ก.พ. 2021
In April, 2021, I resigned from my Job at American Airlines after a nightmare restructuring within the IT organization that ruined careers and forced good people to seek other jobs elsewhere. That was the point in my life that I no longer wanted to be involved in a Technology where automation destroys careers and forces people into other lines of work they really don't want to be in. It was time to retire.
I sold everything I owned (almost everything), including my condo, car, motorcycle, gave away a LOT of my gear, and a lot of stuff I forgot that I even owned and I moved to Manta, Ecuador.
After my arrival, desperately needing things to do, I decided to learn videography, video editing, making TH-cam videos and building a channel to talk about my migration and anything else I find interesting.
That's it.

Not your typical night here……it is a holiday weekend.
I'm indoors watching a Pink Floyd tribute band on TV when I step out on the balcony with my phone to share the experience of listening to the "band" on the beach that's at least a mile away.

Power Outages in Ecuador: The Daily Struggle and What Expats Should Know
มุมมอง 6K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this update, I share the reality of Ecuador’s current power outage crisis and how it’s impacting daily life here. Power cuts have extended up to 14 hours a day, and the outages aren’t always as scheduled, making planning nearly impossible. While some buildings have generators, many are breaking down, running short on fuel, or are simply too costly to maintain consistently. Even major places ...

Don, sorry to hear about your tinnitus. If it's any encouragement, if you're like I am, you'll eventually get used to it in the sense that it won't be such an emotional downer. I've taken comfort in that I still have reasonably good hearing. Like yours, my tinnitus includes also the sound similar to katydids. Occasionally I use the White Noise Lite app. You can scroll through the sound options and see which ones best mask your tinnitus. All the best, Bill. BTW my family and I lived in Cotacachi 2010 to 2012.
This is not good, I spent 10 yrs in SA. This is not going away anytime soon. It sucks glad I haven't booked my flight.
I agree for now. Don't waste your money.
I have had it since 30yr old in the Air Force. Have learned to shut it off during the day. With a prescription of Zolpidem to sleep.
Hi Don. Judy here from USA. I've had tinnitus for about 12 years now. It never will go away, but in time your brain gets used to it where you don't hear it at all. I have to concentrate on it to hear it and say, yep, it's still there. Don't lose hope. It does and will get much better. Hang in there.
Hi Judy, When you first got it, did it make you feel nauseated and just feel crappy all over?
It made me feel like I was going insane. I felt dizzy at times. I just wanted it to stop. I had to resolve to accept it. Seemed like I got floaters in my eyes at the same time. Don't remember getting nausea. Tinnitus is very common as we age so a lot of my friends had it also and assured me I would just get used to it. Getting old sucks at times!
@@judycummings1552 Thanks Judy. I'm starting to get used to the idea that I will just have to get used to it. I think there is a strong coincidence between me getting this tinnitus and feeling sick all the time and I blame that on the crappy air pollution that we're having to deal with. I'm breathing exhaust fumes all day long now that we're going through this energy crisis. It really sucks being here right now.
Very interesting, I am 66 years old and and have been in to Ecuador several times. My plan is to write my last chapter of my life in there.
Go outside barefoot and ground yourself to the earth for 20 minutes. We are being bombarded with electommagnetic frequencies with 5 g towers etc. You are probably hearing wifi frequencies
Oh yeah! I'll get right on that. Thanks for that prescription.
This is happening all over the world. It will take likely, at least 250+ years, long after you and I are gone, and after countless wars, over natural resources, water and land for food have taken place, and a near complete collapse of human civilization I think.....before people start to realize they are all on ONE tiny 'boat' in a galactic ocean, and if they dont work together..no one will survive. Massive global warming and its devastating results does not stop at a country's borders.
Hola Don como estas? Me llamo Jason. We met in Olón November ‘23 at the pub. I don’t remember the name but I know you will understand, Go Buckeyes! Thank you for documenting and keeping us up to date. I trust what I see in your posts. Thank you for bringing us casual life, living, the best, the worst and frankly the news. Thank you. Your question in the video, how much of this goes to waste? None of it does. As you were first walking into the market in the video there were local small “cooler” trucks. Those are the trucks that cruise the neighborhoods bringing fresh fish to your door. Every coastal town has delivery trucks that troll the street. I❤Ecuador. I also saw refrigerated trucks and those go inland. Nothing gets wasted. I had not seen the Manta Market yet. It is not dissimilar to Puerto Lopez where I was working nor Mompiche in Esmereldas, just on a larger scale. Buy you a beer when I see you. J
Thanks Jason, I'll take that beer. BTW, are you sure you met me in Olon? I've never been there. I've been to Ayampie, but not as far as Olon.
I totally enjoyed this video, very refreshing.
Thank you for sharing this video.
Free entertainment. I'll take it.
Don I love your channel I'm from Ecuador been living in New york for 52 yrs and I'm moving back to Quito in January
I'm in Vilcabamba. Don, when I came here, I had high blood pressure too. 4 months later, no more high blood pressure. I'm 68 and go for long walks every day. What you say about Americans here is true. Drunks and losers are common, but I've also met some great people here. Lay off the junk food Don. You know there’s salt that you don't need. Eat fruit instead.
Wow very interesting!! Thanks for sharing Don and George
Loved the fish market and birds on roof. Thnxs
Nice change of pace. I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing
Hey Don, we also have differing ideas of safety. I keep my head on a swivel and take nothing I do not need when going to the mercados. But it is more than worth it to me to go there. It has definitely helped my Spanish, made many friends, learned a ton about different fish (Robalo) and cuts of meat I have never seen before (like Bacon Ribs!!!). As I get older, I might not be so enthused about going there or will go there with a group instead. Right now, it's awesome.
Good for you friend
I could totally go either way there. And I'll bet if you attended the concert outside, it wouldn't cost $100 (or more) and a 35% service fee. And a beer at the venue won't cost $15 or more.. and $40 for parking.
If you lived where I live, you wouldn't need to attend. You get the whole concert for free.
I'm sure you give him a tip. 🤗
Very good video, Felt like a documentary of simple life on the coast of Ecuador . George was the perfect guide to ease you out of your comfort zone . My first year here . I have found Ecuadorians to be friendly and accommodating in every neighborhood . Of course , Ass Clowns can be anywhere. I have found the further away I am away from targeted touristy areas . The safer I feel . I guess that goes anywhere though . Great video . Gracias !
I've been here for a while and I'm comfortable enough with the people here to feel safe in most areas. But there are still some areas I'd rather stay away from.
royal baberahop is no good👎
I'm not all that happy with the haircut I got.
One time we were visiting my wife's family and went to fish market one morning. We went to buy camarones. My brother-in-law ask the guy the price then my brother-in-law said to my wife in spanish. My wife then grabs me and says in English "go stand somewhere else".. I said "why"? She said because when they see your with a gringo they raise the price...!

U think they're the best.
See you're having a great night Don - perfect ♥️🌹♥️
Don, I can't believe that you returned to Ecuador after you were lucky enough to get out. Why?
What d'ya mean? I didn't get out, I went for a visit. This is where I live, good or bad and as long as I have my girlfriend here, I'll be staying here until I just can't stand it anymore.
@DonShader OK. It seemed to me that you were concerned about the situation there and returned to the US. Also we had chatted about you checking out Uruguay because of the unstability in Ecuador. I don't understand why you guys needlessly put yourselves at risk.
@@KC-in9px Yes, you are correct but I didn't MOVE back. I have money invested here, a car, and a lease on an apartment. I gave up Uruguay simply because of the cost of housing there. It's as bad as the US. Let me make something perfectly clear, I didn't "needlessly put myself at risk" by coming here. It's not any more risky than many cities in the US. When I came here, we were under a weak no-name president who finally had to give up and retire but now we have a new one that's willing to put up a fight against the Cartel, at least make an effort to right the wrongs of three different corrup administrations and from the standpoint of economics, it just makes sense to stick around and ride this out. I do have to say that the culture is and always has been my issue and if it becomes economically feasable for me to return to the US before I get too damned old, I will return. I will have to lose the love of my life which will probably be the beginning of the end for me.
@DonShader I wish you well Don. I understand what you mean regarding the costs in the US. I'm flying out to Bangkok this coming Tuesday. Nice seaview condos are $300/mo and less on the Thai coast. Good luck to you.
🎉✨ Fun night for you, Don!!
Did everyone come out alive? lol..
Just barely. I took a sleeping pill and slept like a baby the rest of the night.
Thank you for taking us along. Great video❤️. Interesting how they sell the fish.
nice enjoy
wow venga la rumba..! and wow venga pink FLoyd..!
I love Pink Floyd. The group I was watching is the Australian tribute band, Brit Floyd. Sometimes, I think they're better than the original but we all know better than that.
@@DonShader great music Don!
Good choice of music
Its nice to see and hear you listening to a few good tunes on your tv Don. But what was the party in aide of down at the beach ?
hollydays of Manta City
It's the holidays for Manta, a four-day event that we have every first week of November.
They have Dia de Los Muertos here in Mexico and they celebrate also for 4 days. Noisy parades.
Did George ever get his house finished? When I met him he was waiting for them to build his house.
No, he didn't.
I don't know why, but when you guys passed by that humongous bucket of KFC chicken, I had this instant thought - can you imagine being crushed to death by a bucket of chicken?? I guess it could fall off if they had an earthquake.
I really enjoyed this video, thanks for posting! I missed a bit of the interesting fish market because I started to feel sad for those large fish somehow! 😮 Thanks for showing real places, at real life speed. I also enjoyed eavesdropping the comments about comfort zones and risks with George. Although I am a fearful person, I'd probably like to wander around the not so safe "barrios". The place didn't look too dangerous to me😊. Looking forward to more outings Don! Just wondering what part of Canada George comes from. Canada is always in my ❤. I lived 40 years in BC...
Living the life my friend.
Hey Don, I just found your channel. I as well have tinnitus for about 6 years. Yup, mine for the most part sounds like the old steam water heaters. Only thing that drowns it out is other sound. I also bought a little $10.00 sound machine that has different calming sound like a trickle of a creek, etc. It helps to have a soothing noise while you’re sleeping. Positive thoughts Salud 🥂
Thanks for another interesting video of daily life. It was nice to have your pal George in the video as he seems to explore Manta a bit more than you do. My only complaint was the volume was a bit too low for me to hear well. I guess I could have put in my hearing aids but was just too lazy. Be safe and I look forward to your next video.
Loved this format! More of these please! 🙏🏻
Hello from Peru. That fish market reminded me how it was 20 or 30 years ago here. No running water, no stainless steel tables , no main dock for unloading the caught fast and easy, no crushed ice, no power, etc. The hardworking fishermen should receive more help and support from their government. Precarious infrastructure and way of working. They deserve more such as DPA (Desembarcadero Pesquero Artesanal) . They need fresh-water for cleaning up their caught , water treatment plant, etc. The nearest DPA Cancas in Tumbes could be replicated all over the ecuadorians coast.
You're right, but this is the reality of how the fish market is in Ecuador today.
Thanks for taking us along. I am sorry to hear about the pick pocket.
nice day
Don, Playita Mia is our place for fresh fish and seafood. Always. But sorry to say. You didn't go to the Los Esteros Mercado. You went to the Mercado Central. We shop at Los Esteros Mercado, 2 blocks from Playita Mia and they are friendlier people than in the Mercado Central. The only time we went there I wasn't feeling safe ant the "parking guy" tried to sell us pot. And you should try the Louis XIV café at the Playa tarqui round about. They are as good as Dulce y cremoso for brakfasts 😉
Hello from Peru. Yeah, that fishermen and the place in general looks like "achorado" to me. I do not know how to translate that word, but means and ambient where we are not feeling neither threaten but not also 100" comfortable and safe. Maybe something in between. The road to Mercado Central, looks like nice for me , though
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check it out next time!
well the fish looks ok some of it looked days old sitting there and these vendors need squeegees to get the water off the tables..saw a few tables that should have been in the gargage a few years ago...is anything bleached down and sanitized..a lot of contamination for sure
I have absolutely no clue as to how they sanitize the place. I never stick around long enough to find out. I do know this. I see no hot water except the water that gets heated in the "food court" portion of the market, I don't recall seeing any squeegees, and overall, I'd say the place was realitively unsanatary but this is the way they've been doing this for years.
Did you buy fish,,,Don ?
No, I did not. Geotge did though.
@@DonShader if you know est type fish to buy,,,you cant get any fresher.
@@BPe-ie9je I couln't agree more.
30 mins... what does Stella say about Tarqui ?
Other than stay away, not much.
@@DonShader more money goes home to family, paying cheaper rent. Support them. Life isnt easy.
when these vendors speak like that use a translater to understand better
Boy, I sure wish that I could enjoy fish. Is there a steak market?😁
I agree. I am definitely NOT a fish eater. I only, like fried or boiled shrimp and fried calamari.
Hahaha, uhhhhhhh no!
This was really fun and interesting, Don! It was like spending the day with you. Thanks for doing this.
Hope you didn't get too bored watching.
