_"When Apple introduced the personal assistant in 2011, _*_it was the first to do so_*_"_ This is incorrect, although "Google Now" was introduced later, Google had a personal assistant through voice actions since the very early days in Android (2009?). I could navigate to a location and it would take me to the Beta Navigation app, I could call or text through voice actions, make a Google search and more. Repetition for emphasis; it was Google who paved the way for the personal assistant.
IOS had voice actions before that. You accessed it the same way you access Siri now. IPhone 4 and before had it. When the 4S released they switched from voice commands to Siri.
I'll be honest. Those last few questions just made me think that siri and Cortana are just high powered toys, nice to bring out and show to people at parties, but not something I'd want to use for actual work
Those were my exact thoughts. "Can you sing me a song", what kind of retarded question is that. In terms of usefulness and speed, Google Now beats them all.
if you don't use personal assistants then yeh totally agree, but for me personally I need a personal assistant and I use it a awful lot(alarms, reminders for shopping and paying bills, phoning people, adding appointments and now cortana is here and is more reliable than siri was I also do most of my texts with her so for me she's more than a toy, and out of my small circle of friends and associates about 8-10 people there's only 2 of us that use voice assistants like we do so I get it. reason: because im lazy and it makes my life so much easier, same reason I drive a car or have timers on my heating. I will say that cortana defiantly is a lot more reliable than siri and I think someone here said it, and I think hes right, cortana seems to work without a 3g connection which siri never did, I always had to be on wifi mostly. So yeh certainly a big advantage, cause it works outside 90% of the time compared to siris 20% again just guessing from experience. Siri was that bad outside that I stoped even trying when out and about and I loved siri lol.
While a service known as Google Now was introduced in 2012, many of it's voice functions were already baked into the Google search bar long before that. Just a note.
Google now also opens apps, sets reminders/alarms, gives you information based off of your emails (for example if I get an email from Amazon about a parcel I ordered, google now will display the tracking information and estimated delivery time automatically), offers more info on a certain topic depending on what you have googled somewhere else (I was researching photojournalism at college, and I got a card on my phone about photojournalism tips & tricks).. And plenty of other stuff.
So let's remember, we are looking for a personal ASSISTANT which google now clearly does the best. They didn't even show all of the proactive info Goole now gives you or the ability to speak to her where ever on your phone without opening the app first. Truly the definition of a personal assistant. The others are good but seemed to be focused to much on a "relationship." It seems cortana is already better then siri in most cases.
ummm... When my Android is locked with a pin code I can not find a way to use Google Now hands free or without unlocking the phone first. Both IOS and Windows at least allow a push to talk function so you can speak commands from the lock screen when you push a button. Do you have a link that shows how this can be done from an Android lock screen where swipe to open isn't enabled because this isn't securing your device just to use this hands free function. I also believe Cortana will have hands free ability in the new Denim update for phones running 8xx series chipset.
Ok, I finally have found a way of getting Google Now to open from the lock screen. However it's still a work around as I have to enable English US to be able to use this function. Most importantly it still doesn't give me completely hands free with my Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 Duos as I still have to hit a key to at least wake the phone to the lock screen before I can speak "Ok Google" to enable voice recognition... This is no different than doing a long push on a key for Windows Phone or IOS to enable the voice recognition... but hey at least I can use this function from the lock screen now which is great. I imagine this is because you need a certain chipset and a certain amount of ram to enable this from a screen that is turned off (This would make sense as Cortana hands free isn't available for phones that aren't running a 8xx chipset) BTW, another thing that bugs me with KitKat 4.4 is there is no way that I can see how to save apps to SD card. Do you have any thoughts on a work around for that? Cheers Adam
Not being rude, but it's not a particularly well designed test, let aknown these are designed around the several version and accents of normal english, not accents from other languages speaking english. The phones fared incredibly well, they understood you better than i did.
aswathrce they're ideally designed for native language, accents just destroy them. I was looking for a functions test, to see which worked best, not which understood an accent best
Howard Smith the AIs (if I may call them that) print out the words as he spoke, which were then sent to respective servers and appropriate responses were fetched back. Meaning the voice recognition capability and the functional capability are both being tested. I don't see a problem for anyone in that.
It's important to mention that CORTANA doesn't need internet for basic activities like calling and setting reminder. I don't know about SIRI but Google NOW requires internet for everything, so CORTANA has an advantage there...
+tsuikyit5511 Sorry but my english pronunciation may be better and have no problems with siri (it's a problem with my friends names) but Google Now? Terrible. Maybe it's better on Android phone than in Google app on iPhone.
Haha this is awesome. I really enjoyed the questions, it seems each one has it's pros and cons. Google Now seems to be overall faster, Cortana is fantastic with a great personality. Siri is great too, little bit slower than the others sometimes. Overall you really can't go wrong with any of them I think.
To be fair, "Tiger versus Lion" was a legit question and Siri did get it right, and actually that would be what I would do too. I would probably pul up sports results before a random picture of animals fighting. Also, android "failing" at pronouncing your name- it was never enabled... I also felt this was a bit unfair because Google Now is supposed to just search the web, not a lot of the silly stuff you did at the end. I still prefer Siri, but I think Google Now was left in the dark a bit- that's not what it's made for.
I enjoyed this comparison more then I thought before watching the video. Most have been dull- but this one I felt kept a good range on the different questions- kudos to all three, sticking with Cortana personally. :)
I'm an Android and Windows Phone user and I must say, Cortana is the wittiest of the 3. Google now does the most job correctly but honestly, it doesnt have a personality. Siri is well, siri. I enjoy talking to Cortana the most!
Honestly, Google Now isn't gimmicky or funny - it's more serious. But to be fair, Google has the entire power of Google Search under the hood, which is really a genius idea to integrate that into the assistant.
I think Google Now is the best by far especially with someone like me with an accent, Siri never actually understands what I'm saying, one time I said "How do you say Germany in French?" and it said "Ok, here are your directions to Noodle Nation." WHAT? No hate on siri though if you like it then I have no problem with that, but my preference is Google Now as it actually understands me. I haven't tried Cortana so I'm not so sure about it, yet I don't like the fact I have to go into an actual app.
Slightly unfair because after Siri didn't recognise the first france question it was impossible for it to understand the others as their were subject specific for example 'what is the population there' it doesn't include the pronoun France so he knew it Wouldn't recognise it
***** yes she has. I just asked her: "who is Barack Obama?", than i asked her: "How tall is he?" and she answered: "Barack Obama is about 1.85 meters tall." So yes, she has conversation memory
Brendan Creek he could have repeated the question to siri then go on with the others questions.. That way siri would be able to answer them and he could show us that she has conversation memory
Google Now wins for me hands down, not only does the huge language selection amaze me (even supports different English Accents), the list of actually useful commands is much bigger. Plus, as a 2nd Generation Moto X user, being able to use any launch phrase to start listening for commands, regardless if the phone is unlocked or not, simply can't be beat.
Windows Phone you can download the Translate software which will let you speak a language and have it spoken in another language, or text etc.. This does not mean that Windows Phone does not have this option just because it is not included in Cortana.
ive been using Cortina for 6 weeks now and as m uch as I loved sirri Cortina is proving more powerful and easily more reliable to me. Im not a fan of android so cant give any really input on it. My only negative is that Cortina sometimes wont reply with a voice which can be annoying, but again im sure some people would prefer this. Also wating you ask cotrana for reminders is way more powerful that what I saw android do, though android did some of the simpler ones unlike apple that cant. So because of this alone makes me wonder how you can so clearly put Android assistant on the top. Even after watching your test id be thinking cortana lol. Buyt 1 thing I do love on both my iPhone and my windows phone is the action center or control panel and that was definatly first created by android. IPhone put all the touch screen elements together in a nice simple packqage, android gave us control centre and Microsoft gave us well pretty much everything before anyone else but didn't have the right timeing marketing or even product for that time. Well first pad first voice assistant and first watch lol.
Google now is more than just a voice assistant. It also has a page with "cards" dedicated for you with your personal interests, weather, recent searches, your favorite teams, and many more "short snippets of information."
It would be interesting that you would do a new version of this video and see if the respective teams have fixed the issues (as they are cloud based this would make sense for all the companies).
He does have a heavy accent but only siri seemed to struggle while the other two were almost flawless, i know that google now has an option to learn specific voices so your accent isnt a problem whether the other two do that i dont know but if they dont they should.
As an Apple fan, I do have to say that Google Now and Cortana are really nice. However, Siri is pretty good, too. What she doesn't know, she looks up on the Web. For example, she doesn't track flights, but will most likely pull up a link that can take you straight to the info you want. I also honestly feel that she deserves credit for finding you links to recipes with tomatoes.
I've only watched the beginning of this but the way you tested it was so inaccurate. when Siri and cortana failed to answer the response about Paris, you can't build upon a failed request. because if they fail to pull up a search it's not going to know what you are even searching. it's like you didn't search anything at all. so you just can't say "what's the population?" when the phones failed to here the location from the previous question. all the phone is going to under is "what's the population?" with no context of where the population is based on.
For carbs and cal on pizza, answers were like 30, 150, 29... and you checked all of them Lot's of inacurate answers (points) checked, but beside that, nice test. If only you weren't puting those false marks when answers were true
It would be cool if cortana and google now teamed up their programs where if one didn't know something it would ask the other one because i noticed sometimes if one didn't have information, the other one would.
Cortana can also remind you of sports games without talking to it. You set up your interests and favorite sports teams. Just touch the Circle icon anytime and it will show you news headlines and if your team plays a game that day. Unfortunately the Seattle Mariners have been playing the last month and Cortana didn't remind me of a game until 2 days ago.
I wonder when you asked about the tip breakdown, why Google now didn't answer? I've watched other videos when Google answers that question super fast...
You should have waited for iOS 8 to do this. Will you be putting up an update with the new Siri stuff or is it not really that much different answer-wise?
Moto voice ties in a lot of stuff to Google Now. Because it has to launch, understand what you say, then launch Google Now (if it needs to) its probably not as fast as just opening Google Now. It probably can do more stuff though.
With this comparison, we'd exclude the amount of time it takes to search the results right? *since they are all on different phones with different specs?
Some things Google Now failed here such as "Recommend me a movie", I think it failed maybe because you don't have on your smartphone an app such IMDB or Nokia Trailer installed e.t.c.?
I think this test shows Google Now to be the best assistant if you strictly use your assistant for fetching information. But one thing really irritating about Google Now that nobody seems to talk about is the fact that it rarely does followup prompts. My primary use for assistants is for scheduling. When I want to schedule something, I don't want to have to spew out the date, time, place, event name, etc, all in one sentence... why can't I just say "Schedule an event", then Google asks me "What is it?" then "What time?" then "Where is it?", etc. And then ask to confirm instead of making me press another button. Its the same when asking for directions. You give it the location and it brings up Google Maps, but then you have to press start. The whole idea is that I dont have to look at my phone while driving. Couldn't it just ask me "Would you like me to give directions there?" These little changes would make a huge difference for me.
What didn't appear in this "comparison" is also that Google Now is summonable basically anytime, by simply saying "Ok, Google". Even if the phone is locked it will work. That means no need to press any button and have all the functionalities. (I don't know about the others though, 'cause I never used them)
Siri will listen when you say "Hey Siri" if Siri is opened already, or when charging even if the phone is locked. Cortana has the same functionality too.
Patrick Joshua Saguinsin Google Now listens to you in basically any circumstance and whatever app you have open. You don't need to start it or either open it.
There's a confusion here. Siri works just like Google now. Replace "OK Google" with "Hey Siri", and it will listen to your voice even when locked or in another app.
Noticed Cortana failed on successive failed questions. Baically you assumed that the second , third , etc questions should be answered based on the first question. Google is the only one that got the first question correct, so it was able to follow the questions based on that answer. Also Cortana gave you multiple answers for questions you marked wrong. I wouldn't necessarily say Cortana was wrong based on short questions On another Cortana had a problem with your accent, but did give you the correct answer #2.
You basically did two things here: voice commanded web search and asking some really stupid questions reminding me of the movie Her (2013). Virtual assistants can/should do more than that. Next time try a different approach.
IMO, the main reason why Google Now can easily answer some of the questions which the other two failed to successfully answer is because GN is powered by the Google Search engine. Honestly, if we try powering Cortana with Google Search Engine, we might just have the most powerful Virtual Assistant in the current time.
you're using very vague commands or questions and expecting them to know what exactly you're referring to. Many of your questions/commands could have been answered in multiple ways
Google Now - Actually useful for most situations in which you actually need a voice assistant Siri and Cortana - Somewhat useful, but too focused on being a conversational partner
Except that cortana woke me up 20 mins earlier because there was a crash in my daily route so I could avoid missing work while in traffic jams , plus the voice reminder when you call people or when people call you I think is superior to anything else because you know it's a phone and you tend to call people.
So google wins when it comes to usefulness, Siri is the middleground -- more complete than Cortana but not as fun. Cortana is by far the most fun and has most personality, Cortana is also still in beta so hopefully it will be at least as useful as google now soon.
Google now looks like a robot that can do everything but has no soul Siri is like a secretary that knows what she's doing and has soul Cortana looks like an honest and nice friend that can sing and tell you a joke and really help you.and has the most human feeling
_"When Apple introduced the personal assistant in 2011, _*_it was the first to do so_*_"_

RANKED IMO:
1. Cortana
2. Google now
3. Siri
4. S-voice
Agreed
Ever tried indigo???
Zac Wellman have you try gayish iris on android? lol
And add the crappy Blackberry assistant as no.5
Google Now is useless when you want it to do something other than ask it a question.

papermaniacs could not agree more.

We've got Google now an IPhones.
looks like Google Now and Cortana are the better ones...but Cortana has more of a personality
Yeah but who honestly, after the first like 20 minutes of using it, uses a personal assistant for the 'personality'?
Nathan Wickland someone who doesn't have a girlfriend/boyfriend lol
crossxfuse that is me ,, ahahhaa!
Well to be honest Cortana is awsome cause it is the assistant of Master Chief from halo wich is baddas.. search for her on YT to see her ingame.
We got Google now on IPhone
Google now kicking ass
LOL "The one you're holding"
Siri's sassy
While a service known as Google Now was introduced in 2012, many of it's voice functions were already baked into the Google search bar long before that. Just a note.
"Navigate to the Eiffel Tower in Paris - Sorry, Chris, I can't look for places in Bulgaria" LOL go home Siri, you're drunk
Of ducking course it wouldn't because you are in Bulgaria
Steve bilman so why the other ones work? Were the phones spiritually somewhere else? :o
Juan Carlos Alpízar Google now just navigated me from Scotland to Buzludzha, works for me.
Google now just Googles everything you say, Cortana and Siri are more of virtual personal assistants
Pretty much, but Google is far more informative, and Cortana just KILLS Siri in every thing..
Adam Bolt there's a setting on Google now to enable it on any screen, some phones are even compatible with the screen off
See, that's the problem with Android. It's so open source that what works on one device may not work on another.
Actually it'll work on any 4.0+ device, and even if you have one where it for some magic reason won't work then you can always enable it
Ok, I finally have found a way of getting Google Now to open from the lock screen. However it's still a work around as I have to enable English US to be able to use this function. Google Now wins as an assistant, I don't want to chat with a program, however, if you do, Cortana's there.
OMG, Cortana, what are you?! Amazing! Did Microsoft put a human in phones?
Yeaahhh, so when Siri and Cortana dont remember talking about France, Paris its one point for Android. You shouldn't continue with rubbing it in
It's important to mention that CORTANA doesn't need internet for basic activities like calling and setting reminder. I don't know about SIRI but Google NOW requires internet for everything, so CORTANA has an advantage there...
Not fair BC Siri can't recognize his Russian accent.
***** He's not Russian, he's Bulgarian.
Look in the settings. It's says UK/US English.
Doesn't support other accents. I have to agree she should adapt.

***** Just shut up you dumbass, that made no sense.

Some people are just too stupid to spot trolls.
I like that one of them already provides answers to all three questions regarding the eiffeltower on all three questions.
Haha, Siri converted 100 nautical miles, and got 101 nautical miles as a result!
My Siri gets it right every time 185.2. Very interesting
I don't know why but I laughed so hard when you said, "do you have a boyfriend?"
the difference between ios and android is, on ios you can have siri and google now
And on android you can install any so you want and run multiple things at once.

Actually, it almost always answered last.
angrysquirrel777 Siri is actually faster on iOS 8. He's still on iOS 7 because it doesn't "digitize" spoken words in real-time.

Lot's of inacurate answers (points) checked, but beside that, nice test. If only you weren't puting those false marks when answers were true
Each of them used a different serving portion, which is why the answers were different.
I know, I know.. But overall it's good test. First one of this kind (this year) I think.
Thumbs up Chris (or guys)
It would be cool if cortana and google now teamed up their programs where if one didn't know something it would ask the other one because i noticed sometimes if one didn't have information, the other one would.
Cortana can also remind you of sports games without talking to it. You set up your interests and favorite sports teams. Just touch the Circle icon anytime and it will show you news headlines and if your team plays a game that day. Unfortunately the Seattle Mariners have been playing the last month and Cortana didn't remind me of a game until 2 days ago.
Siri is gimmicky and pathetic compared to g now and cortana
I wonder when you asked about the tip breakdown, why Google now didn't answer? I've watched other videos when Google answers that question super fast...
You should have waited for iOS 8 to do this. Will you be putting up an update with the new Siri stuff or is it not really that much different answer-wise?
@ 5:05 Siri didn't make a mistake, it just used a different action set, intuitive one for some even
Best one in whole TH-cam
Why do you ask google now to tell you a joke, ask it to sing, when it is a source of information, not a named human being simulation?
you get a thumbs up for the "Do a barrel roll" really made me laugh ^^
To me, Google Now is the fastest and most accurate, Cortana is the funniest and can sing, and Siri has the most personality.
How about Moto Voice?
"Hey Android!"
Why don't you put the nexus 5 instead of samsung galaxy bug5?
OMG WHEN THE GLAXY PHONE STATED SAYING I NEED POWER MY LAPTOP SAID IT NEEDS POWER LOL
Glad to hear that Cortana will be available on Android & iOS. Cortana + Google Now on Android will be the best of both worlds.
Can Cortana Compose Emails?
Can't google now be downloaded on all devices now? I have it on my android and iPhone. Not sure about Microsoft products though
Some things Google Now failed here such as "Recommend me a movie", I think it failed maybe because you don't have on your smartphone an app such IMDB or Nokia Trailer installed e.t.c.?
i think the video maker and i was watching different videos. the test clearly shows cortana is equal if not better to Google now.-
I think this test shows Google Now to be the best assistant if you strictly use your assistant for fetching information.
In one of the tests the Android phone did not have voice search running.
Google Now's conversational capability alone is impressive.
Patrick Joshua Saguinsin rekt
There's a confusion here. Siri works just like Google now. Replace "OK Google" with "Hey Siri", and it will listen to your voice even when locked or in another app.
Patrick Joshua Saguinsin Ah, okay. Exactly: I preventively admitted that I never used the other two. :) Thanks for the clarification.
Someone should make an evil assistant called brain and every day should start with a new plan for world domination haha
I wouldn't necessarily say Cortana was wrong based on short questions
On another Cortana had a problem with your accent, but did give you the correct answer #2.
I like the way all of them gave different different results for the same information like the currency conversion.
You basically did two things here: voice commanded web search and asking some really stupid questions reminding me of the movie Her (2013). Virtual assistants can/should do more than that. Next time try a different approach.
Google needs to give a name to its personal assistant instead of Google now
IMO, the main reason why Google Now can easily answer some of the questions which the other two failed to successfully answer is because GN is powered by the Google Search engine. Honestly, if we try powering Cortana with Google Search Engine, we might just have the most powerful Virtual Assistant in the current time.
Cortana got pretty witty at the end XD.
You can download google now on the App Store
you're using very vague commands or questions and expecting them to know what exactly you're referring to. Many of your questions/commands could have been answered in multiple ways
Google Now - Actually useful for most situations in which you actually need a voice assistant
Siri and Cortana - Somewhat useful, but too focused on being a conversational partner
Except that cortana woke me up 20 mins earlier because there was a crash in my daily route so I could avoid missing work while in traffic jams , plus the voice reminder when you call people or when people call you I think is superior to anything else because you know it's a phone and you tend to call people.
Good test, but remind that cortana is in Beta
Well, they all do great - compared to their german versions.
Cortana has the best voice recognition
very nice review., but i think u could use an iPhone5S or more to compete with GalaxyS4 and that Windows Phone
I think Cortana responded more than Siri and Google Now. Cortana is still in the work, so we can expect more exciting commands.
the good news is Siri can now understand the song, when you say "what song is this" on the radio or on television or in the cafe
Google Now and Cortana made Siri look like shit. Siri cant top the master of the all search engines. Plain and simple.
Actually, you were a sucker, because with Cortana you can change the pronounciation of your name. JUST not in that way
i know that every assistant is uploading your voice searches onto the web, but which one is more private?
STcraft none of them.they're all the same.
You can't blame Siri for not understanding his accent. Lol
Show me pictures of the Eiffel Tower in Paris
Siri: Sorry, I can't look for places in Bulgaria" XD too funny XD
So google wins when it comes to usefulness, Siri is the middleground -- more complete than Cortana but not as fun. Cortana is by far the most fun and has most personality, Cortana is also still in beta so hopefully it will be at least as useful as google now soon.
Cortana > Google now > Siri
Cortana+LOVE questions=Real women😂😂😂
Google now is the best abs you can Google that on your iPhone or Microsoft phone using siri or cortana
PERSONAL assistant
basically, cortana.
You say the major 3 mobile OSs, yet there are only iOS and android, but no cyanogen mod! Its that weird thing called "windows".
Some of the things he said no assist on cortana, were actually assists
I think Siri is more used with kids asking it funny questions, rather then productive uses. Google Now and Cortana on the other hand are more useful.
Your questions got real creepy at the end XD.
Google Now has a crazy advantage because you're basically doing a google search
Let me tell that i almost couldn't fucking understand your accent, so i have to congrat that assistants.. LOL
Google now looks like a robot that can do everything but has no soul
Siri is like a secretary that knows what she's doing and has soul
Cortana looks like an honest and nice friend that can sing and tell you a joke and really help you.and has the most human feeling
