  • When we got to Bolivia and found out the number one thing to do is mountain bike down something called "Death Road", there's no way we were going to miss it!
    North Yungas Road between La Paz and the Yungas region of the country is known as the world's most dangerous road, due to its narrow width and the 2000-foot cliff that drops off to one side with no barriers. Over the years hundreds of people have unfortunately lost their lives on this stretch of highway, which has been dubbed Death Road. Surprisingly it's also turned into a tourist attraction, with plenty of intrepid travellers grabbing mountain bikes and riding down its twisting, perilous path.
    We signed up for a Death Road mountain biking tour with the company Gravity Assisted, the most reputable operator in La Paz. We left the city and headed to the highest point of the road, way up in the mountains. From there it was a 3600m descent over 60km along the incredibly scenic and slightly terrifying Death Road.
    Afterwards we paid a visit to a wildlife sanctuary that rescues endangered animals such as spectacled Andean bears and spider monkeys from illegal trafficking.
    It proved to be one of the most amazing experiences of our entire time in South America, and despite the name, we survived.
    This video is not sponsored - we paid full price for our tour with Gravity Assisted, and highly recommend them if you're considering mountain biking Death Road in Bolivia.

    I did this in 2000! First time I have seen a video of it. Memories come flooding back. I spent a few days in Coroico for a festival, and watching the condors. I cherish the few pics I have. Great job!

    I did this in 2002 - when it was still a major highway into and out of La Paz! Looks like no cars or buses these days!

    what types of bikes did they have? so interested but worried they won't have ones for me (petite size). also how steep are the descents, and how fast were you going?

    also are there challenging bits on the terrain? I see you had to go into some dips and bumps- how often and how impactful were theY? (csn't really see when it's fast forwarded on the gopro) ALSO re: gopro did it overheat at all when you're videoing for that long without being able to reach for the on off button ?

    • @nomadasaurus
      @nomadasaurus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, sorry for the late reply. We paid $125USD each or their tour. There are cheaper but we didn't mind paying more as they are a respectable company that service their bikes correctly and are high on safety. We have 2 guides with our group the whole time and the bus followed us. At the end, we went to an awesome animal rescue sanctuary for lunch and explored it.

    60 Year old couple wants to ride the death road. Any advise?

    • @nomadasaurus
      @nomadasaurus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s so awesome. Just take your time. Go at your own pace, it’s not a race. We highly recommend the company Gravity. Their bikes are serviced regularly, they are safe, two guides (front and back) and a bus follows you with you bag and snacks and incase you have had enough. A couple did it with us and he rode but she just rode in the bus (not a fan of heights). Get a GoPro to record it as you need both hands on the handles. When you stop for breaks and view points you can get your camera out of your bag in the bus. Have a great time .

  • @lzvzx

    why are people saying this is terrifying? this trail is green, if even that - it just one massive really wide fire road with a cliff next to it. there are no jumps, rolls, wooden features or anything somewhat challenging as well.

    • @nomadasaurus
      @nomadasaurus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For some, it may not be terrifying but for others it is. Everyone is different. It's not all about the road itself but the surroundings I think that terrifies people the most. And if you go over that edge, you are dead. :)

      I think this probably all the buses that were never designed for this kind of grade and with dubious maintenance. Personally id feel safer on a bike than in a motor vehicle here

      I went down this road back in 2011, the weather was cloudy and foggy, we could barely see any of those sights, the rain was freezing our fingers to the point where we had a hard time using the brakes, at some points the road gets extremely narrow, so the challeging part to me was concentrating, not slipping on the stony road and not being thrown out into those abysses. I remember the instructors giving terror vibes saying "be aware of how your bike works, if you brake ~like this~ you might fly like a superman and there's no rescue at all down there" (which is true tho?), and then you pass by all those tributes to the dead people + Bolivia has such a mystical thing on air to me... One part of the road was completely blocked by the rocks that had fallen out of the mountain, making us take our bikes over our heads on a human chain due to how narrow that part was. I mean, you're right, many parts of the road were definetely steady and ok, but as whole I felt scared.

    I am not looking to say anything bad but I don't really get that literally all of these Yungas Road cycling videos have a 100% happy vibe. Almost as if the content creators would be somehow trying to ignore the fact that a crazy amount of innocent people have actually died there. If I ever get there I would surely happily ride my bike there and would have a good time but I would also try my best to think of the lost ones and their grieving families.
