Alfa Mist & Yussef Dayes are young ambassadors of London’s rebooted, revitalized Jazz Scene which is in the midst of a growth period, strongly influenced by music of the Caribbean islands and the London streets as much as by crossover developments in American jazz. This new sound often bears the markings of calypso, Afrobeat, drum ’n’ bass, plus the spiritual jazz of the 1960s and ’70s.
“It's not so much about complete arrangement, it's more about flow,” Dayes says about his debut album “Black Focis”, a mainly improvised album that shook up the music scene upon its 2016 release. With a hum of jungle, grime and broken beat - it has shaped a self-taught, UK-tipped approach to playing jazz. Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazz-funk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment.
Best experienced live, Yussef Dayes and Alfa Mist bring unpredictable and at times fragmented intensity into their performances.
