I had my first ploughman's lunch in London when I was passing through back in August 1987. I loved the concept and I was on a student's budget, so it was perfect. I was there in January 2024 and did not see it on any pub menus (and I went to many!).

The ploughman's lunch was invented by a marketing agency in the 1960s. To sell more cheese.

@@regmtait100 while this is true it is also based on historical realities. Bread, cheese, and small beers were common fares for the peasantry.

It was, but it was based on actual portable meals and picnic foods that farming folk would take out to the field to consume during working hours. It was an actual thing the milk marketing board hijacked to promote the cheese sales. But it's not a bad thing, as it was pretty authentic to proper ingredients. My dad was 80 when he died about ten years ago, and he grew up on a VERY large farm in the Scunthorpe area (I actually live on land that used to be part of that farm) said when he was a kid in the 1930 and 40s, the only difference they would have with their average packed lunch in the fields (yes they made the kids earn their keep back then) was a few extra items that you don't get in a modern "ploughman's" was an apple or a pear, and maybe some boiled eggs or leftover roast chicken, but everything else amounted to a ploughman's, So they pretty much hit the nail on the head in regards to the components they assembled for marketing reasons. .@@regmtait100

Thank you for an informative video. My grandmother (born in 1910 in North Dakota, USA) referred to this as a "cheese board". Several different high-quality cheeses, dill pickles & sweet gherkins, olives, brown German mustard, cherry tomatoes or sliced tomatoes fresh from the garden, sliced onions or spring onions, cold meats (sliced roast beef or roast poultry), butter, fruit (grapes, apples, or pears) and thick slices of bread. You can fancy it up and call it a charcuterie board. Add some pickled onions, Dijon mustard, soft cheeses like Brie, dried apricots, ripe figs, thin-sliced salami or prosciutto, pickled artichoke hearts, asparagus tips, water crackers or thin toast crisps, etc. I love that so many different cultures have their own take on this delicious "assortment of finger foods" for a mid-day meal (or pub snack).

Probably sacrilege to our British brethren but a Ploughman's Lunch but here in Canada, can have a lovely Oka cheese (from French Quebec?!) as a beautiful alternative along with a Polish ham. I've even enjoyed a friend's Vietnamese grilled, sliced pork side-by-each with good bread, cheese, and fruit. This is truly a magnificent meal that can be made better with international flavours. At least, here in Canada, eh?

Believe it or not but these foods are valuable in the UK, but they wouldn't improve a British Ploughman's we have some of the best cheese in the world 'Shropshire Blue' is my favourite but i'm bias as i'm from Shropshire, a good Ploughman's should be made with an extra mature Cheddar the real stuff matured in the caves of Cheddar Gorge, York Ham is good first mentioned in 1166, it's hard to single out a ham as there's many good makers making hams from traditional British breeds but my favourite is Suffolk Black Ham, they've only been making it for just over 200 years but they've got it just right.

Looks like this is quite an old video but, with so many British traditional food dishes, they stand or fall flat on the quality of the ingredients, like the FEB the constituent parts are simple enough but supermarket stuff just doesn't cut it, everything has to be top quality, then it's like heaven on a plate, amen!.

  • @dannywestwood4113

Thanks Adam, and very well said! A good ploughman's lunch should be the essence of simplicity, the hardest part sourcing the ingredients, though these days fairly decent ingredients are easily available for most. Lovely presentation and choice of ingredients, but the only no-no for me would be the brawn. My mother used to make a big pan of the stuff and, lets say, it's not for me.

That took some doing and lots of video watching. You are right about the state of some British food at eateries. I researched many Ploughman's lunches. Lots of offers looked like meat and salad plates.

Great video as usual Adam, thanks for sharing. Yes have to agree the likes of local farmers markets are good for buying for the ploughman's,
but also my local supermarket are also pretty good for stocking decent cheeses, ham's etc so don't disregard them as you can bet some good
products from them also. My favourite place though is the likes of borough market in London.

Fantastic video! I completely agree with so much of what you’ve said here, but I’ve got a soft spot for adding a gooey, pungent Italian cheese like Gorgonzola into the mix. As a traditional food lover I enjoyed every second of it 😉 Coming from another country I have never had this lunch before and therefore I wanted to ask you if there are any rules on how to eat it properly? Do you put all ingredients on bread? And what do you with the apple? I am making it on Wednesday so please let me know, otherwise I will have to improvise 😂

    • @Adam_Garratt
      @Adam_Garratt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for reaching out and I'll gladly answer your questions. Typically a good ploughman's lunch is all about good quality ingredients. Everything on a ploughman's is there to compliment each other, but there's no strict way of eating it. Think of it like a tapas, so you'll pick a bit of cheese, put that on a cracker with some pickle. Or you could take a bite of cheese with the apple etc. I like to add a few cheese options, one that is mature, a creamier more delicate cheese, and a blue cheese. But you can play around with different types. Flavour wise you're going for salty, fatty, sweet and sour. Hence all the other components. Hope that helps 😊

On rare occasions I stay in hotels, it the devil's own job finding places that serve kippers, smoked haddock, kedgeree or devilled kidneys!

@@ChezJohn Well "The Cookery Year" (published by Readers Digest, first published 1973) that I had for my 21st birthday lists them under "breakfasts and High Teas" , together with Porridge. It does say that Porridge or cornflakes may be followed by fried bacon and eggs, with sausages, tomatoes and mushrooms, also herrings in oatmeal, boiled, poached or scrambled eggs are popular... toast, butter and marmalade" It also lists a recipe for Cod roe and bacon. I think the whole "Traditional English Breakfast" thing must be created by chain cafes/hotels/pubs etc tio standardise their offering and keep the cost down/profits up, as it is almost impossible to find a different breakfast nowadays. When eating the egg & bacon version at home it is so much nicer to find other offerings. I also suspect the more traditional fair is more healthy.

To quote Ry Cooder(into the purple valley) 'the farmer is the man who feeds us all'. However these days I thought the ploughman usually had 2 pints of gassy, immature, over-priced lager in a glass that looks like a flower vase together with micro-waved lasagne and chips for lunch. Or perhaps not. Power to the plough.

My gage of a good pub is if they do a good ploughman's. 👍 Although I am a cheddar cheese man and it must be proper. I haven't had it with silton blue or red Leicester 🤔 Will have try and mix n match. It is also really good with grapes and apple.

Isn't there another lunch or plate around that's similar yet different of some kind?
I don't know a name or something but it was called a "plate" at least, was offered on the afternoon/evening menu. Black pudding, ham and fresh bread at least, the rest was cold. Cheese, pickles... and lots more. One "serving" was enough for two. That's all I remember from it and it was almost like a "Vesper" of some kind we know here in Germany.
Got it somewhere in Wales in a nice little hotel with a restaurant in it. Family-driven. 10-rooms, nothing special, yet cozy, friendly.

Though ploughman's not my thing as I'm not keen on cheese (contrary to popular belief, this isn't a crime) but you did hit on a really important point in the popular misconception that so many people love to peddle in that British dishes are poor or bland. Not if you have quality and the right preparation, then they can stand alongside many well regarded dishes of the world. Funny how former humble millworker's fayre of a couple of decades ago, the black pudding, now is regularly seen in the sniffiest restaurants.

There are many recipes floating around the internet for vegan Thanksgiving "nut loaf" made from finely diced mushrooms & chopped nuts, mixed with minced herbs & spices. I'll bet one of those would taste extra yummy baked into a "pork pie" style crust. Mmmm. The key to good vegan food is: would you eat each of the ingredients separately? Porcini mushrooms? Walnuts? Parsley? Onions? If the answer is yes, then the "loaf" should be delicious.

If even these products shouldnt be of top quality, how are we as human beings are supposed to stay healthy until pension age?? You could not be right more. Simple daily food should be available for everybody at an excellent quality and at an affordable price.
