I truly don’t understand how we attack each other. People are so misguided. We are fighting against what? Why is this allowed to happen. On the other side our government is providing no protection to our press and people helping prevent lawlessness acts. Some People feel they can do whatever we want because there is little to no consequences.Out of control and embarrassing.

@@philiplevi4550 No cities burnt down. I think we would notice if we were missing in an entire City lol. The closest thing to that scale of damage is from wildfires. The BLM looting took out maybe a few hundred places but that's super small town scale far from what could be called a city. I don't condone it but you are exaggerating it because you are the low key racist who will swear they aren't but it's a dead giveaway when you say "but BLM did blah blah blah". It's pretty transparent you just want to gloss over the attack on the capital and redirect the anger at poc in stead and the only probable motive for that would be that you are harboring a racist narrative.

Jared, a lot of the photojournalists did hold their ground and got these extremely critical images. Here is the problem going forward, their images were and are being used to track down and capture the perpetrators. PROBLEM, next time, every photographer they can get their criminal hands-on, will be targeted heavily. Now that they know "press" can be used against them, journalists will be in more jeopardy than ever. They shout it over and over again, THIS ISN'T OVER. Photographers will te tested in the weeks to come, I hope they stay safe and can get in and get out safely.

Great video as always Jared and I have always admired your passion and advocacy for the profession... as a photojournalist in the 90's I covered many demonstrations and protests both peaceful and violent.. at one demo in Athens, Greece, I found myself, along with a few of my colleagues, as usual between the police and the protesters.. the protesters were throwing paving slabs at us and the police were tear gassing us.. when the inevitable police charge happened we got clobbered on both sides... the only thing I can put it down to was that our images were no longer just being used to be a historical photojournalistic record of the day.. they were now being used to bring prosecutions both against the protesters and against the police.. we were no longer just bearing witness to the events but we were becoming witnesses in court.. and thus we became hated and distrusted by all involved. Broken cameras, broken lenses, cuts, bruises and eyes full of gas.. To all the young guns out there looking to make a name for yourselves in this field... in the words of someone far more eloquent than myself.. please make sure you go out there to record the story and don't become the story yourself. Stay safe my friends and thank you for your videos Jared. g

Back in 2017 I started taking pictures of "political" events, first event was Boston's "Free Speech Rally" and quickly learned to not bring my expensive gear. Ever since then I use my old sony a6000 and kit lens. Once had a strange guy claim my camera in a plastic bag (forgot my rain cover) was a can of bear mace and kept demanding police detain me over it. Luckily the cops were more observant than him. At another event where the Proud Boys were present in Providence, RI, I encountered two individuals who kept attempting to use a mirror to "burn out" my cameras sensor and when called out over it they tried to grab my camera by the lens. That experience led me to start carrying a small can of pepper gel for self-defense.

My go to instinct would be do deescalate the situation and if pepper spray buys you the distraction to remove yourself from an immediate threat that would seem the safest thing to do. We're not all Hollywood commandos. Even in the wild a bear will choose to retreat rather than attack and take it's chances. Most people value their lives more than snapping a picture. It seems to me for those who choose to be photo journalists and put themselves in harms way in such places as war zones, they don't carry guns, so they don't pose a threat. Of course I could be mistaken. This is all assumptions and things I'm not an expert on. Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

Oh wait..." see what I'm saying, if the bad guy wants to break the law and hurt or kill people, whether it's legal or not, they'll have a gun. Thats why I love America. I very thing about this is compelling. These people are heroes. This is their job, and this day was a huge risk without them knowing until everything broke loose. They kept going in the spirit of the job as a photojournalist and knowing how vital and important these images are.
No one knows how, when or where to keep safe from an angry mob. You can try to read a situation, but chaos can ensue.
What these photographers did, was go beyond their jobs and risked themselves to get these images. I commend them for their actions to keep going.
If I was there to report that day, and this broke loose, I’m there . So I’d do what I can to document everything I possibly could. Would I put myself in danger? I wouldn’t know that until it happens. It’s a good thing Erin got somewhere safe.

Much like the rioters and looters from over the summer, they are but a small group that only gives a small snapshot of the whole picture. Most of us on both sides just want the same thing ...life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. it saddens me to no end that we have become this angry. It is devastating to see all that stuff happening on TV - I am not even American but what the hell. I just sat there in front of my TV and watched while everything happened and I was shocked. In 2020, we had "protests" in Berlin against the German Covid-rules and some people tried to get into our parliament - some of the Bundestag-Police (three men!) stopped the protesters and saved our parliament. When I watched the broadcast of the attack on your Capitol I was even more shocked - I can't even put it into words.

Has everyone forgotten the riots of the past year? How many times did you see the talking heads of networks support riots in Portland, Seattle, Kenosha, Minneapolis, and DC? Chris Cuomo of CNN even made the comment of "where does it say a protest has to be peaceful?" Remember that? So, as much as I am appalled by the events in DC this week, I cannot ignore the double standard at play and being hurled around by every organization. As a photographer, I often want to know more about the scene I am being shown by these press pool and agency photojournalists. Too often in recent years we've been shown what is really a misrepresentation of the truth. One of the images that started me on this journey to know more about the image is an image made famous during the Bosnian-Serbian war in the early 1990s. Time magazine ran a cover which claimed to show an emaciated refugee detained in a barbed wire fence in a camp. The photo was captured by Mathew Price. The photographer purposefully framed the image to make it appear as if this refugee was held captive in this terrible place. It was a powerful image... except for one thing. It was all a lie. The refugee was not inside a barbed wire camp. He was free. He was on the outside of a camp and the photographer was on the inside! This misrepresentation made the cover of Time! This isn't the only example. Reuter's got caught manipulating images of rocket attack during a scuffle between Israel and Lebanon. The photographer literally copy and pasted the same detonation multiple times in the image to make one rocket look like a barrage from Israel. These lies add up and compound and people wonder why there is so mistrust among the news and media outlets. What we all saw on display is raw anger from years of this. People do not trust the media and certainly do not trust our politicians.

Respect your passion for photography and in this case for your fellow photo journalists.

Thank you for making this video and for sharing Erin’s story. Truly mind blowing.

Absolutely horrid behaviour. No person has a right to behave like this and put someone's life at risk and damage their life's work.
The reporters that stood their ground to bring this to our attention should be commended.

Thanks, Jared, for this video. We really need to acknowledge the courage and dedication of photojournalists more often!
