thank you guys for checking this video out. It's hard to title these things, but we really liked this video and think you will as well. Thank you for checking it out. It was a fun challenge..
Both pictures could work. Depends on the music. The black and white gives more of a classic or moody feel where the colour gives me an alternative or pop feel.
Interesting and different video. It would have been really nice to see a large MP file from a modern camera with a good macro, combined with a extension tubes. Just to get a feel for scale, and level of difficulty.
The black and white is amazing. it stands out. Looking for an album it would definitely catch my eye immediately. The colour is great but the black and white is just different
As someone who has been in the microscope hobby for decades I'm so thrilled to see your excitement and enthusiasm while working with that equipment. I hope that will inspire younger viewers. I'm also pleased to see what one of the big microscope companies has done to refine the tools of the trade. My equipment is ancient by comparison but still helps me achieve my goals. I'd like to say to anyone who can't afford that type of equipment that it is possible to build a functional setup from parts off of eBay, DIY, elbow grease, and a lot of time. Follow your dreams - you can make it happen.
Absolutely agree with you Jared. Came across the same case last summer when I was approached by two strangers while shooting in the streets and they asked if I can take product photos for a startup company. At the time I had 0 experience in product photography but I took the same approach as you did and ended up getting the client.
Not particularly related to the video, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the years of teaching you've brought us Jared. I realized the other day I've been following your work since 2014 and recently have been watching more frequently. The stuff you've taught me is invaluable and please keep up the great work.
IMO the biggest difference between your images and the photo that inspired this project is the record itself. The original photo has much deeper grooves. That tells me it's a vinyl record from the early '70s or earlier. Those records were made from a much thicker and stiffer vinyl material. Those were very fragile discs and could break if you dropped them. They likely had much deeper grooves, which really makes those details stand out. That's what makes that first photo really pop. Technology has taken that away. Audiophiles may argue that old discs had better sound as a result. Somewhere around here I have some 1950s jazz albums from my parents; sadly, I don't have a phonograph to play them.
What about the old Edison tubes that were cylinders which had the steel needle vibrate a device in the big horn shaped speaker on the non electric Victrolas.
The monochrome one was my favorite no doubt. The entire process was really nice and inspiring, thanks for shared with us. You all did a fantastic work!
I'm glad you posted this. A lot of people don't realize these camera companies make industrial products too. I work as a Respiratory Therapist in a hospital and we use Olympus & Pentax scopes for bronchoscopies. Because I'm also a photographer outside the hospital, I often assist the doctors in the procedures. I also do camera work for an M.I.T expert witness that has one of those Olympus microscopes that he uses to check the circuit boards of alleged failed medical equipment. I love when I get called to shoot his investigations because I just record everything with a GH5 while he's dictating what the Microscope is recording--I usually get 250/ hour for doing those and get hired anywhere from 8 to 24 hours.
This is proof that you are a true professional. Sometimes the impression comes from your sense of drama and your flair for promoting your videos. You are, however, a serious guy worthy of our close attention. Keep it up and i will continue to learn from you…but always keep it fun!
Im a microscopist and application specialist for microscopes (not working for Olympus and not in the US). Kudos to the Olympus application specialist (you call him technician). Well done Jared for thinking outside the box and well done Olympus tech for doing outside the box applications! I prefer the B/W too but i would smooth the transition to out of focus area a bot more. It looks chopped of as the DOF is so shallow. @Jared: I also like that you did not simply replicated the REM image. REM have a lotof DOF, way more than optical microscopes.
Silver Tide is the clear winner. It’s got nothing to do with the colour, it transforms the composition. In effect it removes the extreme DoF and sets a totally different tone to the image. Something old, mysterious.. perhaps dangerous. This was a great vid!
Looks great! Glad you took the challenge and got something great. I’ve been intrigued by powerful microscope photography art.. far more than a simple Macro. So I’m an easy thumbs up for this.. but yes.. great job.. glad Olympus helped out and provided a lot of support for the day!
Ya, you don’t say no to a project in your world but out of your wheelhouse. You did the hard work research and made the connections. B&W version just feels deep industrial, though the musician could use them both for marketing alternatives.
So youre switching to Olympus? What will Sony say? Was it full frame? Did you shoot RAW? Did you use this after for "personal use" for dating profiles?
I believe you're right. Depending on the genre of music, both photo schemes works beautifully. Great video, and now you can have an Olympus America truck pop by now and then.
Great idea to share another application of photography along with problem-solving methods to achieve great results for subject matter that one never had attempted before. Entertaining AND educational. Thanks, Jared!
Black & White looks very classy, very cool! one time help my wife with one of her veterinary projects with ticks, but this microscope looks out of another world!
This is really, really cool. To answer your question, color for a vinyl album cover, black and white in the album sleeve! This was a really neat experiment!
B & W is the ringer! I guess it depends on the script/font used on the album! Cheers to Olympus and GREAT JOB Jared! This was really informative. Winning!
Both are great. The only real change I would make is to tone down the pinkish light splash around the needle tip so the groove shows through more (if that's possible).
Wow. The colors look amazing on the final photo. The pink and gold reflecting off the record looks amazing. But then again, the B&W version looks really classy. That’s a hard one to choose.
Always good! Appreciate your insight and look forward to your videos. It reminds me of morning paper back in the day. Also Christmas came a little early this year, just picked up all three FroPacks. Look forward to trying them out. Happy Holidays!
SilverTide looks more classic. The magenta needle is eye catching, but the classic black and white such an amazing edit! Thanks for sharing your process and thoughts. It’s what makes your content even better. The “ HOW YOU GOT THERE” process! Thanks
My preference is the black and white but you can’t go wrong either way. Great video, wonderfully interesting. Glad you shared . And many thanks to Olympus for saying OK to something a little different.
The black and white is absolutely amazing!!! Thanks for an awesome video, it was most interesting and the approach was super well done. I always get ideas from your videos, keep up the great work!
Thanks Jared You showed us how will power can defeat weakness. I’ve always favored to say yes I can do something if I know I can figure it out especially if it’s been done before! Thank you Olympus for this collaboration.
I was actually shopping for a microscope last year because I got to use one at the lab in the Seattle Aquarium. The scopes I've been looking at can image blood cells. Now with what you demonstrated with Olympus, caught my interest. I was imagining leasing one of these microscopes for a year and all the interesting subjects I could capture with this tool. One can get photos of things that never been photographed at this scale. Then I remembered Jared said, he was doing this for an album cover. Can you imaging all the paid work one could get with one of these microscopes. Can you hear my gears spinning? Thank you Olympus for helping out with this project!
Very interesting, totally cool, like both the color and B&W equally....final choice for the band might depend on the nature of the music in the album...
I have been studying photography for some 52 years. As well as a three year certificate course using view cameras and the like, I have tried to keep up with digital along the way. I think this video was one of the best single explanations I have ever seen - thanks for sharing.
thank you guys for checking this video out. It's hard to title these things, but we really liked this video and think you will as well. Thank you for checking it out. It was a fun challenge..
Can you review Olympus mirror less cameras
Both pictures could work. Depends on the music. The black and white gives more of a classic or moody feel where the colour gives me an alternative or pop feel.
$60,000 Camera - Making my tiny needle look huge
Interesting and different video.
It would have been really nice to see a large MP file from a modern camera with a good macro, combined with a extension tubes.
Just to get a feel for scale, and level of difficulty.
Great video! I watch you every week jared!
The black and white is amazing. it stands out. Looking for an album it would definitely catch my eye immediately. The colour is great but the black and white is just different
Agreed - it's stunning. Amazing.

That's bad ass Jean. We never know just how much we can do until you push those limits. Great to hear someone is pushing out there. Keep it up.
Looks great Jared. So cool of Olympus to make this happen.
Not particularly related to the video, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the years of teaching you've brought us Jared.

interesting, thank you!!!
Perhaps an original ‘78’ disc? They were made of something like stone 🤣
yeah, the original 78 rpm discs were made from Shellac not vinyl
I think the original was also a SEM
Edited because I said TEM
What about the old Edison tubes that were cylinders which had the steel needle vibrate a device in the big horn shaped speaker on the non electric Victrolas.
Love those images B&W looks STUNNING colour me impressed
Fascinating Jared. Great use of technology and now you have something positive to say about Olympus. Ha!
The monochrome one was my favorite no doubt.
The entire process was really nice and inspiring, thanks for shared with us.
You all did a fantastic work!

olympus are so cool for doing this, great video Jared ❤️
Two thumbs up to Olympus!
Fascinating process! Kudos to Olympus for helping you out. Both the color and B&W images have their merits - depending on the application.
This is proof that you are a true professional. Sometimes the impression comes from your sense of drama and your flair for promoting your videos. You are, however, a serious guy worthy of our close attention. Keep it up and i will continue to learn from you…but always keep it fun!
Silver tide looks fantastic with this shot

Black and white all the way, Jared! Absolutely amazing! Congrats!
Very cool process AND results! Thanks for sharing!
Really love how you re discovering and let us discover so many sides of photography....a big fan... thank you and happy new year
Silver Tide is the clear winner. It’s got nothing to do with the colour, it transforms the composition. In effect it removes the extreme DoF and sets a totally different tone to the image. Something old, mysterious.. perhaps dangerous.
This was a great vid!
One of the coolest things you've done. Good on Olympus US for getting involved.
Looks great! Glad you took the challenge and got something great. I’ve been intrigued by powerful microscope photography art.. far more than a simple Macro. So I’m an easy thumbs up for this.. but yes.. great job.. glad Olympus helped out and provided a lot of support for the day!
Amazing job and huge hails to Olympus for letting it happen!
Now this is awesome. Very educational. One of your best videos.
Thanks for sharing the whole process of your shoot. Great final shot!!
Proof that we can in fact think through any photography problem that we encounter. Excellent video Jared...inspiring.
i prefer the black and white. not a fan of the bright needle hard to figure out what it was in color
Jared using an Olympus , thats rare 🤯
I was a bit unsure, but once you made your point about leaving room for text it made absolute sense and I loved it.
Really spectacular! Thanks for sharing this. Thanks also to Oly America for making this possible.
I love the black n white as it looks like the groves are burst out the sounds and the colour is great
Exciting video. Interesting to see how you came to the final image. I would definitely choose the black and white image.
color and b/w look both brilliant
great job to you and to Olympus
Nice project!!! Olympus is doing good!!
Great project! Personally I prefer the monochrome image.
Love the creativity, great work and perseverance!
Black and White is my fav.
Ya, you don’t say no to a project in your world but out of your wheelhouse. You did the hard work research and made the connections. B&W version just feels deep industrial, though the musician could use them both for marketing alternatives.
Wow, great result! Nice job Jared!
This is just so kewl. I favor the color final photo.
So youre switching to Olympus? What will Sony say? Was it full frame? Did you shoot RAW? Did you use this after for "personal use" for dating profiles?
I mean... I think what you ended up with was pretty freaking awesome! Nice work!
Definitely B&W. It is simple and powerful, not saturated with colours giving a strong image. Excellent job, regardless of colours!
Thanks for inviting us the audience to be part of the awesome project. Massive kudos sir.🥳
I believe you're right. Depending on the genre of music, both photo schemes works beautifully. Great video, and now you can have an Olympus America truck pop by now and then.
Absolutely fascinating! I think your results were spot on. Great video!
love for your hard work Jared, I love the black and white ❤️
It is an amazing shot!!!!!! Great job JP! Keep it up. Cannot wait for the next challenge.
Great idea to share another application of photography along with problem-solving methods to achieve great results for subject matter that one never had attempted before. Entertaining AND educational. Thanks, Jared!
One of the best videos you have ever done! Great job and thanks!
The focus stacking is fabulous, great work!
Very awesome. I prefer the b&w but agree the color one will draw attention.
Cóngratulations you have bëen sèlected amongst ôur shôrtlisted winner’s, contact the number abôve^^^^^^^^^^^^✅…
One of the best videos of your channel!! Good advice to always move ahead!!
Black & White looks very classy, very cool! one time help my wife with one of her veterinary projects with ticks, but this microscope looks out of another world!
When I seen Olympus in the description I was expecting an EM-1 Mk III, I didn't expect a $65K microscope lol
Very cool. Definitely the black and white
Winning!
Love the black and white.
This was very cool to see both the creative and technical processes.
It always amazes me to see the kind of enthusiasm you have for your work. Lovely video and a wOOOw final image 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Both are great. The only real change I would make is to tone down the pinkish light splash around the needle tip so the groove shows through more (if that's possible).
Great video, really different, why don't you use the black and white of the grooves and use the colour version of the needle in one picture?
Easy.. The groove is in the heart.
B&W is amazing. Loved the video. Nice to see Jared out of his element and still clutching the result.
Wow! Brilliant. And a great explanation.
Wow. The colors look amazing on the final photo. The pink and gold reflecting off the record looks amazing. But then again, the B&W version looks really classy. That’s a hard one to choose.
What a great video I really enjoyed that
I ❤ the monochrome. Cool to see the work you did together as well.
Always good! Appreciate your insight and look forward to your videos. It reminds me of morning paper back in the day. Also Christmas came a little early this year, just picked up all three FroPacks. Look forward to trying them out. Happy Holidays!
Definetly the Black & White, but the color one is amazing also, not just the colors, but what you accomplish getting this shot... just amazing!
SilverTide looks more classic. The magenta needle is eye catching, but the classic black and white such an amazing edit! Thanks for sharing your process and thoughts. It’s what makes your content even better. The “ HOW YOU GOT THERE” process! Thanks
Love the color shot! Much more eye catching
Great video Fro! Thanks for the inspiration!
My preference is the black and white but you can’t go wrong either way. Great video, wonderfully interesting. Glad you shared . And many thanks to Olympus for saying OK to something a little different.
Fantastic results! I loved both but the monochrome is a lot more pleasing to my eye. It would make for a fantastic wallpaper.
This is amazing! I definitely like the black and white one.
Definitely the B&W. It’s just so much more graphic and relatable as a needle in a groove.
Love this and props to Olympus for getting involved
This is one of your best videos as of late. Love it.
absolutely fascinating . thanks Jared. brilliant video. the B&W is cool, but I prefer the colour for the album cover.
Always wondered how to do this. Amazing technology tbh! Thanks for that video. It was amazing!
The black and white is absolutely amazing!!! Thanks for an awesome video, it was most interesting and the approach was super well done. I always get ideas from your videos, keep up the great work!
This is probably your coolest video ever!!! Excellent!!
My preference is b&w Jared...such a good job...well done
Thanks Jared You showed us how will power can defeat weakness. I’ve always favored to say yes I can do something if I know I can figure it out especially if it’s been done before! Thank you Olympus for this collaboration.

you did great, I learned a lot of new ideas out of this extra ordinary experiment
thanks for sharing
I like both images, but the color pops great! Maybe the B&W could be on the back?
I think it came out AMAZING. WoW
Now I want to try this on my macro lens for fun. Be cool.
Thanks JP.
the colours are really amazing
Magnificent image! I love the B&W best!
That thing would be so fun to play with. My mind is already racing with all kinds of ideas.
Unreal results 👏 and yes the colour is epic 👌
Very interesting, totally cool, like both the color and B&W equally....final choice for the band might depend on the nature of the music in the album...
It's a great image, both of them. Hard to tell which I would use is have to see what the final looks like with text of the bands name or logo.
Very cool Jared...I think the color image will work for a the Album cover. But I prefer the black and white (it shows more texture).
I have been studying photography for some 52 years. As well as a three year certificate course using view cameras and the like, I have tried to keep up with digital along the way. I think this video was one of the best single explanations I have ever seen - thanks for sharing.
Wow, thank you so much for sharing. I was completely enthralled and I can’t wait to see another challenge!
