What to Practice Ep 5: Odd Ride Patterns

  • In Episode 5 of what to practice we use groupings of 5's and 7's to create some unique ride patterns.
This kind of polyrhythmic work is GREAT for both independence and ear training. A frustrating, yet fun/ productive practice session. Please, enjoy watching me fail while trying to learn some new grooves!

I like this channel's philosophy "if you're practicing stuff you're good at, you're not practicing".
I also like how you actually SHOW the process including the mess-ups when other drummers on TH-cam just show their best performances 100% of the time.
This is very important for learning students like me because I can actually say, "hey, even my teacher is messing up learning this stuff, so it's no biggie if I mess up"

Love it! The "What to practice" series is a really cool concept, and you are creative and structured in the way you tackle different musical issues/problems/challenges :-) Giving me ideas of how and what to practice myself ;-) Keep it up man, can't wait for the next one!

Thanks Nikolai! That's the idea I had with it! Rather than make a "Lesson" on something I JUST learned... It seems much more natural and organic to just show the process of learning these new things. Thanks for watching!

@@BrandonScottDrums Yes, often it's often more interesting to see the process, rather than just the finished product, especially with good drummers like yourself, to see how to spend ones time in the shed and work on a concept until it sounds dope ;-) I enjoy your series, will keep watching!

Thank you for showing everything, mistakes and all. This is the reality that all drummers like me need to see. Because this is how we all get better, by making mistakes. Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes progress. Please keep doing these types of videos. Looking forward to more.

I actually love showing that side of drumming. We're all so used to seeing the perfect end result and ignore the fact that an hour ago you were failing miserably before finally nailing that last instagram clip. We all suck at something in the beginning and rather than teaching a lesson maybe people can actually learn more from watching my mistakes. Thanks for watching!

Bro you are so good at this! 😂 Ever since coming across that Quarantine Ghost Note lesson this has become one of my favourite channels for adding things to my list of what to practise. Mega original content and an original way of going about the lessons as well. I can’t do what you’re doing and figure things out on the go off the top of my head though, I have to have the notation in front of me. Makes it easier to follow along what’s happening in my brain vs what happening in reality on the kit 😂
