  • Review: Hobby King Basher BZ-888 1/8 Scale Buggy
    Here's my review of the Hobby King BZ-888 1/8 scale buggy. I was very fortunate to win this buggy when Hobby King were running their "Lottery" on their website. I got the ARR version which only required a RX/TX to be hooked up to it. This is a great buggy and one that I'm very proud to own. It needed a couple of upgrades to get it right, but nothing outside the ordinary and parts were fairly cheap, so it made the process a little easier. The end result is a very solid buggy that performs very nicely and can be tuned to be quite competitive.
    Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.

    Great review, I like the new score system. I bought the Sabertooth, I know this is a good platform. I am a huge fan of the Basher series. They take a beating within reason and cost pennies to repair. Cheers

    Great review thanks! I have raced this buggy and am competitive with it. I did have to cut down the front sway bars a bit as they would run on things, replace the tires, lock tight all the screws, shave off a bit off the battery tray so the pinion had a bit more room, and I had to do a custom mod to hold the motor in place against the spur as the motor mount kept backing out no matter how much lock tight I put on it. I took an aluminum servo mount and shaved it down, drilled a couple holes in the chassis to mount it and put a screw through it against the motor mount and a bunch of lock tight.
    I have really enjoyed the BZ-888 and when it goes on sale again will plan on buying a spare.
    Items I have had to replace have been the wing screws, front top plate (broke during a crash), bent front shock tower, front CVD (bent then and I don't know how), body (I ordered a new one and bent an old credit card and used some CA glue to keep in in place where the rear mount is), the tires and wheels (as a note Duratrax pre-mounted tires rub on the front reducing steering, but are great on the back) and the dog bones cup is starting to show wear. The tires that really brought the steering alive have been the Pro-Line Diamondbacks using the stock wheels. Also my chassis is wearing pretty good on the bottom which I plan to replace in a few months.
    It has been EXTREMELY durable after I got everything tightened up and with lock tight. I would say I'm no worse off than any of the other big name brands when it comes to durability.
    The next thing I plan to do thanks to your video is go with the red springs and to go up a tooth or two on the pinion. I find I'm chassis slapping more than the other guys on the track and that after a couple of laps I can't clear some of the jumps (double and triple) the way I want to as the battery loses a bit of juice.
    If you get this car run a few laps and check all the screws. Lock tight and tighten the ones that are coming loose. Also from the get go lock tight in the motor screws and the motor mount screws and consider doing the mod I did to keep the motor from moving away from the spur. Also check your tie rods. The connector on the shock tower needs lock tight and tightening. Some people have reported leaking shocks so make sure to tear those down and put them back together if you have that issue. I did not.
    Over all run a couple of laps, check everything, run a couple more laps and recheck. Do that for the first day and you should be good.
    As far as upgrades very little is needed except for the spring kit for the shocks, the upgraded shock towers, and a slightly taller pinion. As for spares to keep around order a couple extra bodies, arms, dog bone cups, upper decks, hinge pins, spur, wing screws, and shock shafts. I also ordered the ball cup set as mine on the front wheel side are starting to show some wear, but that may have been from the Duratrax pre-mounted tires which rubbed.
    I have not yet upgraded the servo, and yes it is slow. I race with it, but would appreciate a faster one.
    I agree with the review and highly recommend the buggy. Great value and yes you can be competitive with it.

    Hello, not sure if you still reply to this old thread, but I have just purchased this second hand and want to take it apart, seems like it needs oil as its not so smooth compared to my other brushless 1/10 cars, would you recommend taking it apart and adding oil to the diffs? And also how easy is that to do, I know some diffs are complicated

      +Matt Baker I bought the wheels off eBay. I searched "1/8 scale buggy wheels" on eBay and found a heap of them. The ones I have on there are these (www.ebay.com.au/itm/4PCS-RC-1-8-Scale-Car-Buggy-88mm-Diameter-17mm-Hub-Plastic-Black-Wheels-Rims-84B-/261409704714?hash=item3cdd3b8b0a) but you can search around and you'll find different ones as well as different colours. What springs and what weight oil are you using on your shocks? (Front and rear) Mine arrived last week, and its sitting (very) low! Topped up with 45 front, and 40 back, but still low (ish)

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rik Sidebottom I'm using the red (stiff) springs from Hobby King. They give the buggy a little more lift and prevent it from bottoming out on jumps. They do make the ride a little stiff though, so keep that in mind.

    Hi, how do you think it compares next to the sabertooth?
    because they are at the same price range and look quite similar.

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pizzahawai9 The Sabertooth is a better buy, in my opinion. It's faster, has better tires, it's much bigger and more versatile. But if you want something that handles better, then the BZ-888 is a great deal.

    Hey Aussie im stuck on two cars the Basher sabertooth or bz 888 which one would you recommend and why

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +aj morar Two very different cars and it's hard to pick one over the other because they offer different experiences. The Sabertooth is a good basher car that has pretty good handling and is fast. The BZ-888 is a bit more like a dart off road, it handles much better and is fairly stable. But the 888 is not as fast as the Sabertooth and the tires are terrible, so new tires and taller gearing is recommended in order for it to be up to standard. While the Sabertooth suffers from weak hinge pins and soft shock shafts...
      It really comes down to what you intend to do with the car you choose and where you will run it. The Sabertooth has better ground clearance, but the 888 will out-handle it in the corners. Because they are so different, there's no definitive choice. Hope that helps.

      +Aussie RC Playground Yes this does help alot from your info I think I'm gonna go with the 888 because I will be racing this in the Texas TSA comp so I will need that handling I appreciate your help.

    • @sebatt4939
      @sebatt4939 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It CAN be ran with a 3s, but i would not recommend it, as you would have to resolder the deans connectors so there is only one. This is dumb because if you want to use it on 4s you will have to resolder it AGAIN... Thats kind of bad in my opinion.

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sebastian Atterhall Actually, you don't have to solder anything, you can just make a loop plug just like the ones used in the ARRMA cars and that will solve your problem when using one 3S battery. The biggest issue you'll have using a 3S will be speed and the fact the car will probably be unbalanced in the air. Chassis is designed to carry 2 packs, using only one will throw balance off. As for speed, the BZ-888 is not very quick out of the box on 4S, so using 3S will probably feel terrible and way too slow to enjoy the car. I wouldn't recommend it.

      Good. They just discontinue stuff randomly though, don't they? It's odd. I actually saw the large supply of parts on the site after I commented. I keep kicking around the idea of getting one of the arr vehicles from them, and keep deciding not to. No Idea why.

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parts can sometimes be a problem depending on the RC you have. It's why I say in the review that when you buy from HK you're locked in to what they stock.
      That said, I've only ever experienced abnormal waiting periods on parts with the Mini Basher MT. And all the RCs I've had so far have all had very affordable prices on parts.
      I've never waited more than 2 weeks on parts from overseas and most OS orders now arrive in about a week. Deliveries from my local warehouse only take a couple of days.
      I've always found HK prices for delivery to be fair especially with parts and other small items, however, buying RCs from the international warehouse is not advisable, postage can get expensive. But buying locally, it's fine...

    • @elb7032
      @elb7032 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aussie RC Playground So for the people in the UK who have been waiting for a long time, do you think they ordered from the wrong warehouse?

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Elom don't know. My local warehouse doesn't stock many spares, so I usually order my parts from the international warehouse. So if they're out of stock, I'm outta luck and I have to wait. I don't know about other countries and what their warehouses stock.
      Also, being in different parts of the world will obviously effect postage time periods, something I forgot to mention earlier.
