Interesting fact..when Joel was a teenager, he became a very successful boxer..making it all the way to the Golden Gloves Tournament. You can tell that his nose was broken a time or two.

Interesting. An old friend David Douglas who lived in Southwater near Horsham who was (and i'm sure still is) a Massive Billy Joel fan, told me once that I HAD Billy's nose! I've never forgotten it ... what a compliment! Thank you David!😀

There is an old movie about a pianist who also was a boxer.. He was a genius at both but piano players need their hands to be flexible with joints that work well. Everntually boxing will destroy a pianist's hands.

Billy Joel is to Long Island as Bruce Springsteen is to New Jersey. His work has spanned decades, and is influenced by everything from jazz to '50s doo wop to gospel. He's covered serious subjects like Vietnam ("Goodnight Saigon"), unhealthy relationships ("Laura," "The Stranger"), blue collar economic woes ("Allentown," "The Downeaster Alexa"), modern day anxiety ("Pressure," "Captain Jack"), etc. He's also released some of the greatest love songs ever written, like "Tell Her About It," "She's Always a Woman," and "The Longest Time." Definitely worth a deep dive.

This song was my very first girlfriend's and mine's song. I was 19. We were together for about 5 or 6 years. And even after we were over, it was still "our" song. No matter where I was in the World, whenever I heard this song, it reminded me of her. We had no contact since the mid 80s. About 20 years go, I was walking into my local supermarket and this song was playing. I smiled instantly and thought of her. Finished my shopping and went home. Turned on my computer, checked my emails and there was an email from HER. And we've been in contact ever since.

I was going to suggest “New York State of Mind” because 1) it’s like a love letter to his hometown of NYC, 2) it has a great sax solo, and 3) the version from “The Old Grey Whistle Test” (a British TV show) really shows what a great performer he is. He’s totally at home onstage but he shares the spotlight with the incredible members of his band. Class act, true musicianship.

I heard that he was walking in New York with one of his teenage kids and humming the tune to a song he was working on and the kid got embarrassed. He told them to understand that a lot of people pay him to make those sounds in public. Kids. Good reaction. They aren't all mellow listening, just enough of them.

The saxophonist is Mark Rivera, he has been in the band since 1981 at least. Yes it was in the original song, Billy uses saxophone nearly as much as piano. He has had two brilliant sax players since 1975 Richie Canata and Mark Rivera.

    • @pabloivanreyes7963
      @pabloivanreyes7963 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I would only add that the saxophonist that actually recorded the album solo (which Canata and Rivera would conceptually draw their inspiration from in live concerts) was Phil Woods, one of the top jazz session players (alto sax) in NYC at the time. That Woods' sax solo helped elevate the song "Just the Way You Are" and the album, The Stranger (1977), to two Grammy Awards (Song of the Year, and Record of the Year) in1978.
Ironically, Joel originally did not want to include it on The Stranger because he did not want to be branded a "wedding singer"... but on an evening visit to the studio by Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow, while Joel and Phil Ramone (producer/engineer) were still mixing, Joel played them the song, and told them that he probably would not include it on the album. After hearing the song, and of Joel's intentions, Ronstadt & Snow were emphatic about including the song, saying 'Are you crazy? That's the hit. You're out of your minds if you don't put it on the album.'
Well, Joel and Ramone listened to them, "and the rest is history!" Besides "Piano Man," "Just the Way You Are" is Joel's most requested song.

I was one of many who suggested "Just the Way You Are" to you following your discovery of "Piano Man" and Billy Joel this week. I am so thrilled you have your first sample of his amazing catalogue of music. You love lyrics, so you will love "Only the Good Die Young." It always stuns me when people don't know Billy Joel and his music; of course it's inevitable his career soared in the 70s and that was half a century ago but he wrote all his music and everything he does is literally a masterpiece of songwriting. He is a true wordsmith. And this song is one of the most romantic songs ever written. He was nominated for 23 Grammys and won 6; he wrote 33 top 40 hits including three number ones. Just listen to anything at all and you're going to be amazed and delighted. He is a deep man and the songs he writes are deep. And unique -- no one else sounds like him in any sense.

He also has a rocker, banger, all type sound. For gospel feel "River of Dreams". For an edge "Pressure". He was first rock act invited to old USSR in 87. You got to see "You May Be Right". Live from USSR and "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant". Live from Long Island. From his run down apt in New York he wrote "Captain Jack". About an "H" dealer and his customers. What makes Billy Joel so famous is how much of versatile artist he is. He is a little Pop, Rock, DooWop and R&B, he can do it all. 'Just the Way you Are' (1977) won Joel two Grammys for Song and Record of the Year. You should hear the recorded versions more.

Billy is from Long Island NY I grew up a few miles from him and we both lived in the saame style Levitt home. He was trained classically and when hee stopped doing rock and pop went on to do that type of music. He is still touring and has sold the 4th most records by an American arist . He is an incredible story teller and a legen here on LI where he still lives Let me give you 3 of my favorite live performances by him Innocent Man from the matter of trust a bridge to Russia which i think is hgis best live vocal performance done in Russia , Scens from an Itallian Resturaunt live from Long Island ,I was a union stagehand here on LI and worked this show and finally New York state of mind from the old grey whistle test you can go wrong with any of them. You aint heard nothing yet untilyou try those :) Oh 1 moree thing he was married to super model Christy Brinkley who this song was written about. Another about her is Uptown girl

I would also point you to "New York State of Mind" and "River of Dreams" just because they're great songs. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant (live from Long Island). He played that with an injured hand, and it's still insane! These are a pretty good variety.

Together, went to see Billy Joel last year at the SOFI Stadium in LA. It was MAGICAL. He's in his seventies and he plays just as well as he did in his younger days. The crowd was amazing. It's so much fun watching you discover the great Billy Joel. A once-in-a-generation talent, for sure! As others have pointed out, not all his songs are so "wholesome". Some of them are downright bitter (but still fantastic) -- "The Entertainer", "Big Shot", "Allentown", etc. But in a way, that just makes the wholesome songs better...you know he's not afraid to express his more negative emotions, so when he does have a "sweet" moment, it feels more genuine, somehow. Looking forward to more "Jilly Boel" reactions in the future! :D

First, I love watching your reactions. You are so adorable and real.
Second, I grew up listening to Billy Joel. He is from Long Island, NY. When he sings about the "village green" (another song), my friends and I all knew it was about the West Village Green (where we lived) in Hicksville, Long Island. The village greens were strips of stores with a playground and pool behind them. There was a store on one end where my friends and I spent time picking out candy, but there was a bar on the other end where Billy hung out as a teen. I was too young to go to the bar, but I remember seeing the guys hanging around outside of it all the time. As we got older, we would often wonder if Billy was one of the guys we saw hanging out there. lol

Just a quick tip - no matter their age (Billy Joel is 74 years old) most performers of Billy Joel's enormous fame, incredible talent and ongoing popularity - decade after decade - and up until today, probably wouldn't be flattered by the grandfather reference. He's a star - and has been since he was 25 years old, with his first hit: Piano Man. He's a classically trained pianist, a gifted songwriter, and continues to sell out performances. He's sold 150 million records, dated (and married) the most beautiful women, including supermodel Christie Brinkley. (Watch them together in Joel's "Uptown Girl" video.)
What I'm saying is, he may look like a grandfather - he may actually be a grandfather by now - but he's the only one allowed to point that out or make it a joke.
Huge international stars: they're not like thee and me.
