    I never knew you could turn metals on the lathe with hand tools until I saw Clickspring. You do a great job of it too. I want to try it, but all I have is a pole lathe that is put away for the winter.

    • @duncanmcharg
      @duncanmcharg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G'day Cadwaladr, I've turned brass on my home-made pole lathe. All you need is to drill a small diameter hole in each end (as central as you can manage) for the dead centres to locate in eg. =< The extra depth of the hole will store oil and keep it lubricated. Then use a graver style tool (like Uri's or Clickspring's). You can make one out of an old, small, triangular file, re-shaped on the end. :) Cheers Duncan

    Cellulose plastic was designed to replace ivory billiard balls. So you can also use some types of plastic in place of ivory in some applications. American Holly also is very light and can be made to look like ebony with dye. Black plastic is a suitable substitute for the most expensive ebonies though, which are more uniform in their color.

    I suggest buying a center drill bit. They are designed to make a starting center hole in metal. They are different than a drill bit. Using a drill bit to start a hole is very iffy as drill bits will wander off center, as I can see in the vid. Buy one (or a set) you will like them in a drilling application.
