    As a senior approaching the age of 73 It is not wanting to live to be 100, but the quality of life that concerns me. About 2 years ago I started having acute OA, first my hands, then my knees. I couldn't hold a knife to cook or turn the key in the door lock. Then about last October as I was volunteering at a historic park, I twisted my right knee. I could hardly walk, I thought like a younger person saying; I can walk this off but as the days past the knee became inflamed and the pain now is acute. As far as my heart and weight I am very, very healthy with the exception of OA. I just had the CMC surgery on my right hand and now scheduled for knee replacement in May. Living a long life isn't important to me, it living a quality life, the ability to do the things I like to do. If I drop dead at 78, so be it. If I live to 93 well, that will be amazing.

      I started a week ago fasting from 8 at night until 2 -3 pm the next day. I may have one or two meals. The amazing thing is ...I'm NEVER hungry, unlike eating a low-cal diet where I feel deprived at each meal. This way you can eat unitl you are Full when you have your meal. So your body doesn't slow your metabolism thinking you're starving. I've lost 4 lbs already. I only have about 5 to go, so I have to be careful. But normally would be in the kitchen every hour at night, looking for a handful of carbs, and would never be satisfied. . Because I only have 1 or 2 meals now I really want to make the ones I eat really healthy too. So I have cut usesless carbs. NO hunger, no cravings, amazing!

    Studies have shown that its better to intermittent fast than to do caloric restriction over 3 meals a day, so do anything from 16 to 23 hour fasts each day. Or fast 24 hours once a week or even better do a 5 day fast once every 4 months, its all to do with autophagy which Gary Wenk did not discuss in this video.

    Wow! Lots of concrete thinkers and humorless souls eager to be offended. This speaker combines a dry wit with a healthy sarcasm and refused to protect “sacred cows” - I found him fresh and funny. If people listen to what he’s really saying in it’s entirety, it boils down to reducing aging by reducing caloric intake and resultant free radical production, while being mindful of substances that modulate our neurotransmitters, mood and behavior. He wasn’t really saying eat donuts over veggies, or drink gallons of coffee, or don’t remain active! It’s a pity his wit was lost on a majority of those who commented in this space! Even his “misogyny” was merely meant to point out that the poster was dated and sexist - not that he himself espoused those beliefs.

    Keep in mind his audience for this presentation. Most of his listeners aren't going to have a good or even general understanding of metabolism, so this presentation is, accordingly, "dumbed down." Everything he is saying is based on research, so none of it is incorrect, and I think some of you may be taking what he is saying too seriously. So even though a banana and donut may have similar caloric value (perhaps a very small donut) in theory, they are chemically distinct and the body does not catabolize them in the exact same manner. Also, the donut will have precursors for the acetylcholine anabolism pathways that the banana does not have to offer, therefor increasing some executive functions in the brain. Acetylcholine transmission is antagonized by adenosine, and caffeine, an adenosine agonist, can serve to increase acetylcholine transmission via disinhibition, therefor increasing attention, memory, etc. Also, colorful foods do contain antioxidants, so I do not see the problem with him saying that. Lastly, it is well documented, in animal studies especially, that lower calorie diets lead to less disease, there is no arguing that. It's not like he is saying that the only way to live your life is to eat coffee and donuts for breakfast everyday followed by a light lunch consisting of 2 blueberries, a hershey's kiss and a joint. He is just advising you to be mindful of what you are eating, and presenting to you the relationships between certain foods and their effects on the body supported by current science. Perhaps he could have illustrated the negative side effects of some of his recommendations (refined sugars from the donut and acute side effects of marijuana), but overall, nothing he said was untrue. I advise those of you who have a disdain for Dr. Wenk to read some of his research before sharing your possibly uninformed opinions (you can find plenty of it for free at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed - just search his name). His science is a little flashy for me too, and even this presentation could have probably included more data and less fancy graphic art, but he is a pretty respected researcher. So maybe after you have spent some time at Johns Hopkins University and the National Science Foundation as a program director (As Dr. Wenk has, himself), then you can criticize Dr. Wenk's presentation using such words as "absolute rubbish".

    In general eat less. But know your specific metabolic rate. We are may all be egual under the law but physically we are all different. I burn calories at a fantastic rate even when sitting down, so I need to eat more than the couch potato with a slow MBR. Still, to generalize, years ago I was told that every 7 years you need to reduce your caloric intake by a factor of 1/7 until you reach an optimum intake by age 50 which will serve you will in old age. well they say that calorie restriction and/or intermittent fasting extends lifespan and is healthy (abdbyou are ingestinf less toxins abd additives and soya which is in pretty much almost everything). While bodybuiliding os exercising - which is also healthy. Though new research shows that too mucu exercise is unhealthy (like quite unhealthy, at least in terms of cardio exercise), so a balance must be found. It is a lot more in depth than this, and one must do their own detailed research.

      Don't listen to them. Olympians eat like MAD and live longer than average people. This is why I never listen to a psychologist speak. They talk like they are experts in everything, which they are not. Gary is giving diet advice, while holding no degree in dietetics.
      Psychologists will argue about EVERYTHING! and tell you how wrong you are. But as soon as you discuss something that offends them or isn't politically correct. they will say..."CORRELATION DOES NOT IMPLY CAUSATION"
      Gary broke the golden rule. He's stating that correlation is implying causation.

    • @kender1412
      @kender1412 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interestingly enough, you're wrong. He wasn't joking, either. While eating a dozen donuts for breakfast is a bad idea, eating A (as in one) donut for breakfast is actually a good thing. There was a study done a decade or so ago, which was almost immediately followed up by a number of others because the results were rather surprising. The study was an attempt to determine why France had such a low obesity level when compared to the rest of the world despite all of the rich, heavy foods they eat. It was determined in all of these studies that it was their breakfast habits. The French tend to eat sugary pastries for breakfast. It turns out that the main function of breakfast is to jump-start your metabolism after being at rest for the night so it can metabolize anything left from dinner and to prepare for what you will be eating for lunch. While like ANYTHING else, overdoing it is counterproductive, a small dose of sugar and carbs stokes up the fires of your body's food processing systems quite well. The coffee is a good stimulant to further accomplish the same goal. In addition to all of this, the benefits Dr. Wenk spoke of as far as brain chemistry is concerned, are also legitimate.

    • @lancelot1953
      @lancelot1953 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, like Jason mentioned below, he is right - coffee is more effective as it stimulates the metabolism (and a few other hormonal/neurotransmitter-mediated increases in neural functioning) when coupled with a quick source of energy i.e. something easy to digest that gives you rapid increase in blood sugar levels. Of course, this has to be supported as insulin effects may kick-in if this is over done or energy (glucose) is not used. We tested this on military service members required to perform at a short moment's notice (the typical fighter jock's breakfast... a doughnut and a soda!). I am serious, we tested it, Ciao, L

      For my late breakfast yesterday I had six chicken wings (skin and cartilage eaten) two large coffees with sugar and cream, two large mandarins, a large banana, three gluten-free toast with cheese. I then went for an eight-hour walk (average time) up a steep hill, a tricky traverse then back home, which took me 5.5 hours. I had nothing to eat on the walk and didn't feel hungry.
      You can include coffee and donuts in your breakfast but not exclusively. Dr Wenk was not being overly prescriptive.

    If you want to live longer, don't look to indulge bad habits. Cut out most of your meat and dairy, replace that with fruit and vegetables. Also, don't drink much coffee: don't cut it out but don't drink a pot or two a day.

    This researcher seems nice, but he is very narrow in his thinking. It’s like he is basing his statements off of only some studies and ignoring decades of research showing other things. This is part of the reason I went on to medical school after getting a PhD in Neuroscience. It’s hard to avoid letting your focus get too narrow, b/c there is so much research out there and you need to move in some direction instead of spinning in circles comparing all of the inconsistent findings. We’d like to make it simple, but our bodies are far more complicated than any of this!! Oversimplifying leads to misunderstanding - a common thing in the US - like when we tried “fat free” or “carb free” diets. Instead, we need to focus on balance and moderation.
    1) Telling people to eat more donuts, that’s a terrible idea in the US!! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US. The biggest plague in US right now is obesity -> metabolic syndrome -> vascular disease, heart disease -> metabolic syndrome (diabetes included in this) destroys the entire body. We don’t really need “quick calories” usually. Our bodies are usually very good at keeping glucose levels stable (breaking down glycogen or fat stores) while fasting over night and even for the next couple of days. Quick calories are NOT necessary, unless you’ve depleted your glycogen stores from a couple of days of overexertion and lack of calories, OR you already have metabolic syndrome. Quick calories may be a major cause of insulin insensitivity leading to diabetes. Calorie restriction is may be the only useful things he mentioned. What about carbs, versus fats, versus proteins? If he is going to discuss left over oxygen and respiration….these 3 produce very different respiratory quotients. He should be discussing the importance of complex carbs, proteins, and healthy fats with calorie restriction AND exercise.
    2) When he described the metabolism of food with resulting excess oxygen left over, again, he really oversimplified the topic and deduced inaccurate, narrow-in-focus conclusions. He should have discussed balancing carbs with proteins and fats. Breathing is great, oxygen is great! Look at an athlete who does cardio once/day getting respiratory rate up versus someone with COPD. Carbon dioxide build up from less breathing is the bigger enemy. This researcher is extremely misleading in his conclusions.
    3) Newer research shows people may be overdoing it on antioxidants. He suggests oxygen is the enemy, when in reality, oxygen is vital for life. In addition to oxygen being required for fuel in most cells of the body, the body creates free radicals from oxygen in order to kill bacteria. Without free radicals (oxidants), people would suffer fatal staph and fungal infections in childhood (as is seen in chronic granulomatous disease for example). He shouldn’t speak of these things (oxygen, sugar, coffee, marijuana, antioxidants, etc…) as enemies versus friends. Everything needs to be in moderation. All of these things can be BOTH enemies and friends. A good researcher would never base conclusions off of a subset of studies, as a study could show any of these things as being an enemy or a friend.
    4) When he showed us pictures of the hippocampus and described his research showing marijuana reducing oxygen in the hippocampus in monkeys, it is absurd that he confidently deduced from those findings that oxygen is bad for the hippocampus and marijuana is good! I recall learning, in my neuroscience PhD program, about all of the studies showing how marijuana permanently damages hippocampal memory. I even had a professor who dedicated his career to studying memory b/c he had already damaged his memory by long term marijuana use. He now a notebook with him at all times and he has to write down everything in order to function, due to the permanent damage he induced. Just look at your typical pot-head, anyone who knows pot-heads, is a pot-head, or has even seen pot-heads on tv knows that memory gets worse, not better. Also, is the researcher of this talk forgetting the fact that we measure oxygen in fMRIs to observe areas of the brain that are successfully activated while using the brain? For example, the fMRI shows increased oxygen flow in the visual cortex while people are looking at pictures. Oxygen is required for brain cells to work!
    5) How could he say “throw away your tennis shoes??!!” Hopefully anyone reading this could get a sense of how narrow his scope is by saying “coffee, quick sugars, and chocolate are good, you can throw away your tennis shoes.” Imagine the decades of research with enumerable studies showing the benefits of exercise for health versus a very small number of studies showing chocolate and quick sugars to be beneficial (and far more studies - including all of those on obesity - showing quick sugars and chocolate to be bad). Again, “calorie restriction” may be the only accurate thing he spoke of. But exercise is a vital component with calorie restriction. Cardio exercise increases the number of calories burned and muscle/strength exercising increases basal metabolic rate (so we can burn more calories per day) - both decreasing the net intake calories per day. But aside from just caloric benefit, exercise has been shown to be beneficial for the body in many different ways. For example, increasing heart and respiratory rate for 30 minutes/day can strengthen the cardiovascular system; exercise positively affects hormone and neurotransmitter balance in the body; there are many examples of health benefits.
    This researcher is very narrow-in-focus with inaccurate and misleading conclusions.

      Yeah, it seemed a little to me like he was just telling people what they want to hear. Maybe so they will shop at his grocery-mart? Maybe his bakery hasn't been selling enough doughnuts. I gotta disagree with your statements on marijuana though, i don't think it's the compound that damages your memory, but maybe just the conventional way of consuming it. I think it's the carbon monoxide we take in from smoking it, not to mention all the butane we inhale. There are ways around that though that make it way more healthy.

      +Ceszack Anm I think you are placing a lot of emphasis on silly things he said like "eat more donuts" and "throw away your tennis shoes" a bit too seriously as they more or less were just half serious summaries of his points... and also you really should watch his longer lecture on youtube because his entire viewpoint focuses on moderation of all things and how there is no black and white of helpful vs non-helpful. Which is exactly the point you made.. it just sounds like you didn't hear him make it too.
