  • Tai O is a fishing village located on the western side of Hong Kong's Lantau Island. Tai O's name means "big inlet," referring to the confluence of two waterways (Tai O Creek and Tai O River) as they pass through the community.
Tai O has a long history of salt production. In 1940, the Tai O salt marshes covered 70 acres (280,000 m2) in 1940 and that the production in 1938 was 25,000 piculs (1,512 metric tons). Currently, fishing as a way of life is disappearing. Even though many locals continue to fish, it only barely supports their daily needs. Although there is a public school on the island, most children leave when they reach adulthood.
