It can be run continuously. There is actually very little strain on the gearing (which is typically what wears the quickest on LEGO machines), so I imagine you could run it for quite a long time before the parts would noticeably wear out.
I would buy this if it had an alarm that could wake me up in the morning, and if it wouldn't fall into pieces if I tried to press the button while half asleep.
+JK Brickworks Hey, I would like to make this, but I can't seem to find any instructions for it. I'm willing to donate if you would make some for it. :D
I have an old ball clock, that I bought off of eBay. A friend had one years ago and I never forgot how mesmerising it could be, so when I stumbled upon it, I bought it. However, the motor needs repair / replacement. Maybe, instead, I'll use your design and just build one. Thanks for building and posting this. brilliant.
If this comes as a set I definitely want one, and if not this guy is a lego engineer of extraordinary ability. If the later is the case then you sir have my utmost respect, and your kids are to be envied.
I keep coming back to watch this video to show people. This is definitely my favorite creation of yours Jason. I so want this sitting in my MOC room constantly working. It'd be amazing if there could be like a solar powered version of this so that it could be sat on a sunny window seal and run mostly off of sunlight. Though I suppose that one little motor doesn't pull that much power huh? What do you think consumes more energy, that or your typical clock radio?
Thanks! I think this would draw more power than a typical clock radio. It is doing a bit of work to lift the balls up. Solar powered would be cool though!
I wonder if there could be a little ticker/switch under the bottom row to intricate if the time is AM or PM. My thought is that every time that bottom rail movies it hits the ticker and sets a display saying PM or AM. But I guess you would have to adjust to having the 12pm and 12am parts a little differnet.
+Joshua Walters I think you will have windows. ;D So look on the outside and you will know if it is am or pm. :P (Sry, for my bad english. I'm already learning :/)
Lego Technik Master haha I got your joke. :D I was just wondering about the mechanical challange to it. Plus you could live in a place like northern Alaska where you can't tell if it's AM or PM in some times of the day.
My grandma had this clock at her house 30 years ago when I was growing up (except not in LEGO), I loved loading it all up to 11:59 and waiting for them all to fall. Excellent work!
coastersplus i like how it is in the video i couldnt imagine having to hear this thing 24/7 non stop, but they way it is would actually help every hr or so it drops balls that would let me know what time it is and or to take a break from pc
PLEASE LEAVE INSTRUCTIONS! Ive spent so long trying to make something similar to this, (around 4-5 hours) and i still cannot figure out for the life of me how to do it all. (i do realise this is quite old, but even pictures explaining how it works will be great) Thank you!!!!
No worries. Yeah, I guess it all comes down to how serious you are about having it be 100% accurate. I refined this one recently, extending the chain so that the cycle is closer to 1 minute. It's still a bit off, but I can run it for most of a day with around 1 minute slippage. It's accurate enough to show to people, or display at a show.
As I wrote in the description, the model I'm showing here does not keep actual time. The latest mindstorms does have motors with built in rotation sensors, so it could be done with those. Without fine motor control you could also rig up a sensor to pause/speed up the motor to ensure 1 ball reaches the same point in the cycle every minute.
+JK Brickworks Totally irrelevant to this comment but I am super interested in 3D modeling this for 3D printing and I would love to know the measurements of certain sections. My current guess is that the base is 15x20cm. Im not sure about the rest. I would appreciate any help
***** Yes you did. If you for some reason disagree, then i'm still waiting for your reasons as to why 12 hour clocks are somehow better than 24 hour clocks. Although you propperbly don't have any, as that seems to be the reason you immediately play the insult card. Too bad it doesn't mean anything with no substance.
This is so cool! I just started getting back into Lego after being away from them for about 20 years. This channel is fantastic! Keep up the good work!
It always astounds me what creative things people can do with legos. Who would have thought the little bricks I played with as a kid could be used to make a functional clock? Um, besides you, obviously. Heheh.
theres loads of rolling ball clocks and a couple lego rolling ball clocks, but this is the the smallest and looks the best, you should do a video on how to make this when youve got the timing perfect
He explained it pretty well. Easy to build if you have some key components. (flat tiles / balls / the motor. Just make sure the motor goes slow enough to make 1 circle a minute. when the balls fall down the block out the 1 single ball that must travel further. that's all to it. Still gr8t design.
When I was a (smaller, somewhat younger) kid, my dad used to have an all-plastic (non- LEGO) clock very similar to this. The balls looked like tennis balls.
Ah yeah you did too, sorry about that. I only ask because I am in the process of making a mechanical lego clock myself with a few technic parts I bought off ebay, and I haven't actually bought a mindstorms set yet because I heard a new "ev3" version is going to be released soon. I was thinking of buying a synchronous motor to power it, but like you, I probably won't actually run it as a clock 24/7, so I guess close enough is good enough if you're just showing off the mechanical side of things.
So amazingly clever! You are the Leonardo DaVinci of the Lego world!
Nomad Colossus Lego-nardo
Legonardo DaBricki
It's actually pretty simple
Ok Michelle Hay
Michelle Hay yea you can’t make what he makes, now can you?
You've gotta make a 12 hour time-lapse of this thing.
I Agree
No no no, a *livestream*
nah nah, a full 12 hour video.
It can be run continuously. There is actually very little strain on the gearing (which is typically what wears the quickest on LEGO machines), so I imagine you could run it for quite a long time before the parts would noticeably wear out.
neat
Just brilliant!
"When a rail gets full, it tips. Which we'll see in a minute."
_don't you mean a second_
Lol I thought the same thing 😂
I would buy this if it had an alarm that could wake me up in the morning, and if it wouldn't fall into pieces if I tried to press the button while half asleep.
DaKrotomo I think it would wake you up every hour when all the balls cycled through it! :)
+JK Brickworks Hey, I would like to make this, but I can't seem to find any instructions for it. I'm willing to donate if you would make some for it. :D
+JK Brickworks I want one please! Well designed :-)
@Nirek Setty No, never made instructions for this one.
Dude, this is some next level engineering! Awesome work!
lol its not lext nevel, but sure its awesome.

Wow. you amazed me with this clock and the other creations you made and showed on your channel. You earned a sub.

I want one of these so much - I wish we could buy this kit.

+Joshua Walters You'd just need something that spins 180° each time it is hit.
Drew Northup Hey, that's not a bad idea.

1159 (this is real time) transitioning into 12 was way to satisfying to watch. Great Job!!
Wow have you timed it to loop in exactly 1 minute? Or is it just a proof a concept
This is just a proof of concept. In the video a ball is dropped about every 55 seconds. I have since improved it so it is more accurate though.
Raymond Groot
Maybe one ball a second onto a 10 ball rail, that drops once every 10 seconds onto a 6 ball rail. A 60 ball rail would be a bad idea.

i like how it is in the video i couldnt imagine having to hear this thing 24/7 non stop, but they way it is would actually help every hr or so it drops balls that would let me know what time it is and or to take a break from pc
@coaster that's how a Grandfather clock functions, just get an app that does that or buy a mini desk one or something
You make us novice builders look less than average :)

It doesn't accurately tell time. He commented this
Zane Is A Dog i honestly dont care, it looks so cool
Wasn't saying it wasn't cool, just saying it's not reliable. If you take this design you have to find a way to slow the rotation
i dont need it to tell the time, i just want it cos it looks cool. thats what im saying :)
@@DanielSargentHereDid you manage to build it?

How do you control the engine to move at the exact speed?
Unfortunately I don't. It doesn't actually keep very accurate time.
JK Brickworks
Too bad.
+JK Brickworks but still
Clever and creative
I would imagine with each chain link added, the time it would take for a ball to reach the top would increase.
Tyler Hughes My thoughts exactly.
You could change the gearing, too.
OMG... Wait... -speachless- ...
This is really cool. How did you calibrate the ball every minute
+Mardigrasman23 There is nothing that keeps it accurate right now. You would need to add a timing motor to it to make it keep proper time.
+JK Brickworks do you break these creations down?
+JK Brickworks Totally irrelevant to this comment but I am super interested in 3D modeling this for 3D printing and I would love to know the measurements of certain sections. My current guess is that the base is 15x20cm. Im not sure about the rest. I would appreciate any help

+Bill Eldringhoff You just put the balls on the rails by hand.
+JK Brickworks is there any instruction??
thanks!
