Tips for Men to Pack in a Carry-On Bag

  • I will share tips to help men pack. Men, these packing tips are how my husband packs in his suitcase. If you pack for your husband, you will also pick up some tips for a man’s carry-on bag essentials. The number one packing tip for men is to remember that you will carry the essentials on vacation which can weigh your gym shorts down. So pack some shorts with a belt because inside your pockets are your travel wallet, rental car keys, and your phone (and maybe your wife’s phone if she’s wearing a super cute skirt). #packingtipsformen

    Wonderful ideas for packing for men! I usually start packing two weeks before vacation, and my husband starts packing the night before we leave. He has definitely forgot some important items! He watched your video and said “Hmmm…good ideas..I need to rethink my usual packing.” Yay!

      My mom used to have me pack for her lol. She and her husband love going camping and she makes me come over to pack for her. Literally rarely wears all of what I help her pack and always tries to give me 7 outfits for a 3 day at most trip. I love her but she be cray cray. I have moved states and she recently went to Arizona and had to pack for herself for the first time in 22 years. Apparently she did good! lol I still tease her about having her 5 year old wrap their own presents for 20 years. (yes I did this. I wrapped a box for my present. She does not do good at tetris either)

    Thank you for doing a video for us guys. Very helpful tips. Your videos are very helpful and well done. I find the shorts from Columbia are lightweight and comfortable and usually come with a non metal belt. The same goes for thier zip off pants, for traveling in the winter going to a warm location.

    Your channel saved me. We recently traveled to Seattle for my FIL’s funeral. We had not flown in a couple of years. We have always checked our main bags. This time we only did carry ons. I’m converted!!! We even had a smaller plane from Denver to home (Tulsa) and the airline needed to have them stored below. It was no problem at all. I bought a “softish” rolling carry on bag like yours and it was perfect. I tend to be an over packer. The bag was more on the smaller carry on size. Your tips made it perfect for me. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
    MY HACK:
    I have a hanging toiletries bag I love, but it takes up too much space in a suitcase. Five of us were going to be sharing a small bathroom in a suite. So I packed my grouped items in individual clear bags. (Hair, teeth, face, body, etc) and I also packed a clear hanging shoe organizer. I took up very little space. I actually cut off the bottom half and still ten slots for my toiletries bags. Our teenage daughter took up a lot of the teeny tiny counter space some of the time. It was nice to model for her how one can be organized in a shared space. I could not have done it so well without you!

    I strongly recommend icebreaker and smart wool merino wool for travel. A thin merino wool undershirt (t-shirt) keeps my hubby cool and sweat free. They NEVER stink and you can wear them several times. The socks are amazing too. Really great quality (although expensive) for minimal packing and extreme comfort. Love your videos!

    Great video! Of course it took me a minute to figure out no adjustment boxers! 😂😂 On layering, merino wool base layers are great. They are very soft, wick away moisture and are odor absorbing. Can wear three or four times before they need to be washed. They also have outer layers like the thin pullovers and summer blends with linen. They are a little pricey, but worth the money. I get mine off Amazon. I buy the men’s base layers, because they have better range of motion and I have monkey arms. Women’s arm length don’t fit unless I buy 2x and I’m not a 2x. I just ordered a couple of the thin pullovers and 2 water bottles for my trip in 58 days to Europe!! My fingers are crossed, so far my trip is still a go!! Since I pack for my husband, this video really helped! Have a Blessed Day!!

    My late Dad "retired" as the senior Flt. Engineer for PanAm when they went under. Life-long aviator since the 1950's. We airline kids were taught how to pack, and frankly, how to travel. And, yes we had to dress when we flew! Totally worth it! $75 R/T first class 747 to London....those were the days!!!

      We always dressed up when we flew as children and it’s a difficult habit to break especially since my husband is also a pilot. I feel privileged to be able to fly “free” and I want to show respect to my husband and his airline by dressing business casual , I’m still comfy but look polished at the same time. We also experienced the shut down of Continental due to the tragedy of 9/11. On 9/12 my husband was unemployed, uninsured , etc. I feel grateful that I had my teaching career to see us through .

    I use a smaller hanging toiletry bag to put my electronics /tech stuff. I too also like to use the little first class bags to put my things in. You can find lots of stuff at thrift stores to use as packing bags/pouches. I love back to school sales as I can find many colorful bags or pouches to use. Also, pack a small cedar plank in your bag to keep it fresh or sneaker oder balls.

    I posted this on a different one, but it is a great one, here. for the airport outfit, wear pants that stay up without a belt, and wear a windbreaker with good pockets. put your belt and any pocket stuff that you don't need to get TO the airport into the carryon, and put the rest into the windbreaker as you go towards security. wear lace up shoes, with the laces untied and tucked inside the shoes. then at security, it is easy to slip them off and put them and the windbreaker into the bin. easy to slip them on at the end of security, and then get out of the traffic pattern to configure yourself into how you want to be when you are in the airplane.

    • @kenbrown2808
      @kenbrown2808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TravelTipsbyLaurie if I had to characterize my travel clothing choices, it would be "boring." going through airport security should be uneventful, and I choose my clothing with that goal in mind - without sacrificing comfort on the airplane, or looking like a slob, of course. even though I am aggressively casual, I do have my limits.

  • @mikerich9784
    @mikerich9784 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for these tips, Laurie. I only use briefs for my underwear because they take less space in my suitcase. I also can use a backpack or laptop briefcase to carry my laptop and smartphone. I keep my jewelry in the carry-on suitcase in the small compartment and place the liquids bag into larger compartment; both of these compartments are found on the front of the carry-on suitcase that I open upon entering the check-in line to the TSA checkpoint. My backpack has a mesh pocket in one of two main compartments in it to carry my laptop cord and the charging cable for my smartphone. The Charging head for my smartphone is kept in the front section of the backpack in the smallest compartment possible to fit it comfortably. I also carry a small case containing my flash drives and adapters for the micro SD cards. Hope this information is helpful in how I pack for a trip.

    • @mikerich9784
      @mikerich9784 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I have a belt clip holster for my smartphone. When packing, I pack the smartphone inside the belt clip holster case. When heading to the airport, I pack the phone and case inside my personal item (laptop briefcase or backpack).

On a recent trip I noticed that they mostly had 1) carry-on size, 2)underseat size 3) a pouch/purse-like item. They seem to use “J-hooks” too ? Thx!

    Another question: on a recent trip (and 1st for us) on Basic-economy United: I prepared with the correct size personal carry item. But when we got to the airport they weren’t really checking (it was an Airbus 320). Is it hit or miss that they check? I saw many with personal carry size larger than “united basic” and many also with carry-on size. Or are they lax during the pandemic? Just wondering.

      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have been lax on the surface but very inconsistent. I am told to not take out liquids in one airport and the very next day will have to take them out. Maybe it's new technology or new for that day and then it moves to another airport...or different security threat levels. We have to really listen. In precheck a guy had to take off his belt the other day.

    What time of year did y’all go to Normandy, I am planning on going in May 2022. Looking at temperatures it will be in the 50-60. With the wind coming off the water wondering if a jacket with a hood would be warm enough?

    Hi Laurie, love your videos! I’m a amateur photographer from the uk, travelling to New York next year, I’m only taking one DSLR camera, is there a limit on the amount of camera batteries I can take? They will all be under the 100wah as they are just standard batteries, I know anything over you need pre approval. I want to take quite a few as I will be out daily taking pictures, but I don’t want to be stung at the airport. I’d appreciate it if you could help :)

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie
      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not think so. I would download the free myTSA app and ask them. I traveled with my huge lights and camera but only one extra battery and all those cords and tripod and they did not need to screen anything. I think as long as they're in your carry-on, it's not a fire hazard.

    What backpack does your husband use? I am trying to find one that fits the United measurements. I ordered one from Amazon that said it measured 17.5in * 13.5in * 7in. It seems taller when I measure it. It is a miraizen Smart Business Travel Laptop USB Anti-Theft Backpack/w Combo Lock + Organizer. Don’t need the lock except for when I use it at the amusement park-to walk around with. Can you tell me if that would fit as his personal item?

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie
      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm his does not fit under some of the seats; it weighs 8 pounds by itself lol. We would buy a couple that you like that you can return. Remember that most backpacks (not his) can smush somewhat. This one is similar to his but more of a usable backpack:bit.ly/3x0zo5m And some high end school ones at Walmart are fantastic too.

      I always use a plastic belt for exactly this reason.
      I’m a very frequent intercontinental flyer and about 50% of the time if the security people point to my belt I just say ‘plastic’ and normally it’s good enough.
      The only place I have had trouble is when flying in the US, where the TSA people are completely inflexible in this regard. It’s not worth arguing…
