It's been great to see the upsurge over the last few days in views and subscribers and as someone has mentioned its an impressive set of stats for such a young channel. As a SE London man myself it was nice to see the Mayflower being visited, such a pub established in local history as you said. As for the food - well portion size was about the norm for London nowadays and it did look nice. Look forward to your trips further a field just to see if value for money increases as so many of the comments have promised. BTW - I hope your doing some exercise to burn off all the calories you been eating recently, you do get around!

Now when i lived in London Pub grub was in its infancy. A meal might set you back 4 -7 quid ( sausage and a mash, chilli con carne) Now many years later it would seem that a pub can rinse you of about (starter 9, main course 20 and dessert 8) close to 40 notes for a pub lunch! A three course meal at a pub should be tops 25. And don't get me started on "craft ales" Nice vid, keep it up, enjoying it

8 is a good score for this. Lovely venue and the meal looked adequate. I just love having a slice of lemon with fish - just gives it a massive lift for me. I love mint, but not minted peas .... would be nice to think there might be an option with them. I'd certainly go here.
Just had a look at the Mayflower menu, it doesn’t say, hand cut chips, or that the fish is battered on the premises so likely all bought in and cooked from frozen, so seemed quite expensive as it wasn’t particularly authentic, or very big for the price. Glad you enjoyed the fish though. Look forward to you next vlog
I love that pub. Great in the winter time with the open fire. A real taste of Victorian London. I think that decking area is new. I don't recall it being there when I last visited. Seeing that rotten chip I won't eat there.... will just stick to the beer next time I'm in London.
I know how old the pub is. That's not the point I'm making. The fittings and fixtures inside the pub are from the Victorian era. I've beem there.@@JazzFunkNobby1964
Great review for a really historic and atmospheric pub, one of the best on that side of the river. As you mention it is quite small and very busy. The deck area is superb now and seems to have a new roof cover. I totally agree with your marking and would have given it the same out of 10. The Church, St Mary's, and graveyard across the road from the pub have the grave of the captain of The Mayflower, Christopher Jones, on its grounds along with Lee Boo a Southseas Island prince who came to England to learn the language and customs but died within a few months due to disease.
Another beautiful place with great history. Food looked really good. I personally thought the portion was good. I couldn't eat more than that, though I guess it never hurts to have leftovers to take home!

I am also a new subscriber and I have observed that several of the English travel TH-camrs didn't want to do UK because "no-one would find it interesting" and then when they do, they get surprised by the views! Slowly working my way through your videos Gary since discovering your excellent channel. That looked very good fish and chips, not exactly cheap, but then again that's London, and as we all know, cod has become quite expensive these days. Visited that pub many moons ago and I think it's time for a return visit- as you say, let's give it a go!😊
I'm loving the videos. Have you ever thought about coming to visit Green Lanes Harringay for some kebabs? You'll struggle to find better Turkish and Kurdish cuisine in London.
@@GaryEats I'd suggest Antepliler, Gokuyzu or Diyarbakir. But there are loads and they're all excellent! Maybe do a recce first? Oh, and everything is cooked over coal and they get busy.
Been there a good few years ago, the Pub is spot on. Now days ask where the fish comes from? The trend now days, fish caught by Norwegian Factory ships, prepared, frozen and boxed for the UK F&C shops etc then thawed . If not dried off properly , the fish comes out wet and the taste is bland. My wife and I, in July entered a Chippy up North. When I asked the guy behind the counter about the fish, he could not tell me where the fish came from . I kid you not. We walked away. Your fish looked OK but a bit thin and small, likewise the chips which I suspect were frozen, into a deep pan fryer or Air fryer? Ps Pubs cant do F&C, leave it to a chippy.
Many Pilgrims (Scrooby Segregation Group) who were on the Mayflower were my ancestors. Mayflower set sail from Plymouth in 1620. Mayflower and second ship Speedwell joined together in Southampton and from there on they went for Plymouth, picked up more crew and passengers and then left on 16th September 1620. However due to the leak on Speedwell, the ship returned back to England and Mayflower continued on its own. The target was the most northern part of Virginia colony, which its today's New York City, but due to bad weather they didn't go further than what now is New England. They first anchored in Provincetown Harbor, Cape Cod on November 11, 1620. On December 18th they arrived to their final destination to Plymouth Bay, MA. (little history lesson)
@@GaryEats any time. - Christopher Jones was I think born in Harwich, Essex (it's uncertain). He moved with his family to Rotherhithe in 1611. His children were born in Rotherhithe. Jones died in 1622.

My gosh, they don't give the food away do they. It would want to be excellent quality at those prices. Beer was cheap however. The decking has been added since my last visit. All the better for it too. Top review Gary 👍

The angel is only a stone’s throw away that backs on to the river. I was born in Bermondsey in the 50 . The mayflower was the only pub in England where you could buy stamps behind the bar.
For Fish and Chips, try Christies at Thames Ditton, half way from Kingston to the Scily Isles. They cook in beef dripping something very few chippys do. They use the cooking oil for fuel in their car engines ! IMHO one if the best chippys in the UK !
I like this channel I think youl do well mate. None of the over hype stuff for the camera. Just a regular guy calm & collected honest reviews. Everybody else doing it are a bit too showmanesque at times. There's a market for the calm approach.

To be honest Gary I would have given this one a seven. I have just come back from the coast where I had a fantastic fish in beer batter, chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. My fish was delicious and much thicker and my chips were not anemic!!

Adore the sign within the entry about unattended children and workhouses. Much needed here in the States. While I typically would not do this myself, do you feel that you might have requested crispier chips? I'm guessing that that was the part of the meal that was the least successful.

I wonder if anyone still does Jumbo Cod, it was once quite popular but I guess times change. There was a time fish and chips was a cheap meal, these days it’s more of a treat. Maybe you could find the best chip shop and try it out for us viewers.
Quality over quantity I always say Gary but that was on the steep side for me ! I'm 56 yrs old now and have worked all over the country on the railways so iv got a good knowledge of were to eat and prices ? To be honest London were I live is hard to get hold of decent fish and chips compared to up north TBH ! When you start going on the road I'll give you a few pointers depending on were your going and if iv been there ? u gave been around over the last 27 hrs with work ! Slowly working my way through your videos Gary since discovering your excellent channel. That looked very good fish and chips, not exactly cheap, but then again that's London, and as we all know, cod has become quite expensive these days. Been there a good few years ago, the Pub is spot on. Now days ask where the fish comes from? The trend now days, fish caught by Norwegian Factory ships, prepared, frozen and boxed for the UK F&C shops etc then thawed . If not dried off properly , the fish comes out wet and the taste is bland. My wife and I, in July entered a Chippy up North. When I asked the guy behind the counter about the fish, he could not tell me where the fish came from . I kid you not. We walked away. Your fish looked OK but a bit thin and small, likewise the chips which I suspect were frozen, into a deep pan fryer or Air fryer? Ps Pubs cant do F&C, leave it to a chippy.

Many Pilgrims (Scrooby Segregation Group) who were on the Mayflower were my ancestors. Mayflower set sail from Plymouth in 1620. Mayflower and second ship Speedwell joined together in Southampton and from there on they went for Plymouth, picked up more crew and passengers and then left on 16th September 1620. However due to the leak on Speedwell, the ship returned back to England and Mayflower continued on its own. The target was the most northern part of Virginia colony, which its today's New York City, but due to bad weather they didn't go further than what now is New England. They first anchored in Provincetown Harbor, Cape Cod on November 11, 1620. On December 18th they arrived to their final destination to Plymouth Bay, MA. (little history lesson)

Have only just discovered your channel and have been binge watching over the last week, very enjoyable and well done. I have only one small criticism and that is when you show the menu could you please put up a shot that we can pause and read that would be lovely thank you.
Try pushing the pause button. I always manage to do that and study the menu. Likewise when Hannah Ricketts shows menus

The angel is only a stone’s throw away that backs on to the river. I was born in Bermondsey in the 50 . The mayflower was the only pub in England where you could buy stamps behind the bar.

For Fish and Chips, try Christies at Thames Ditton, half way from Kingston to the Scily Isles. They cook in beef dripping something very few chippys do. They use the cooking oil for fuel in their car engines ! IMHO one if the best chippys in the UK !

I like this channel I think youl do well mate. None of the over hype stuff for the camera. Just a regular guy calm & collected honest reviews. Everybody else doing it are a bit too showmanesque at times. There's a market for the calm approach.

To be honest Gary I would have given this one a seven. I have just come back from the coast where I had a fantastic fish in beer batter, chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. My fish was delicious and much thicker and my chips were not anemic!!

Adore the sign within the entry about unattended children and workhouses. Much needed here in the States. While I typically would not do this myself, do you feel that you might have requested crispier chips? I'm guessing that that was the part of the meal that was the least successful.

The meal looked ok tbh, & I'm still trying to get my head around the pricing system down there although I was born in Surrey... But I'm living on the East coast now, so there is a difference when eating out & of course the cities cost more to stay at as well as eat 👍

I wonder if anyone still does Jumbo Cod, it was once quite popular but I guess times change. There was a time fish and chips was a cheap meal, these days it’s more of a treat. Maybe you could find the best chip shop and try it out for us viewers.

Quality over quantity I always say Gary but that was on the steep side for me ! I'm 56 yrs old now and have worked all over the country on the railways so iv got a good knowledge of were to eat and prices ? To be honest London were I live is hard to get hold of decent fish and chips compared to up north TBH ! When you start going on the road I'll give you a few pointers depending on were your going and if iv been there ? u gave been around over the last 27 hrs with work !
