Not sure if you guys watched it till the end. But this short animation IS based on a true story that happened during the Halifax explosion in 1917 when a sailor was thrown 2km away by the explosion and lived

@@QuantumWalnut iirc it was actually based on a firefighter who was responding to the fire near the waterfront and was knocked back (not nearly that far) and had all his clothes blown off. There WAS an anchor that was thrown further than 2km though. Pretty impressive for a giant piece of metal.
edit: google says his name was Billy Wells.

  • @craigstewart7391

Fun facts: the Halifax explosion was 4 times more powerful that the 2020 Beirut explosion. Ocular medical science advanced because so many people in Halifax were at their windows watching the fire in the harbour before the explosion. Boston sent so much help that to this day Halifax sends Boston a Christmas tree every year. The north side of the Halifax City Hall clock is stuck at the time of the explosion--9:04 am. Also see the animators' "Wild Life"--so great.

Loving this short. I live in Bridgewater NS Canada. After the explosion, they built a lot of cement block houses that were supposed to be able to endure another such explosion. You can still see these houses in the North end on Halifax, which took the brunt of the blast. There is also a large monument for the victims of the tragedy on the other side of the harbour. Each year they have a ceremony there. They used to have the explosion survivors at the event, but I think they have all passed away now.

FANTASTIC! I LOVE this. I love that the character of the sailor is all there for us to put together. I love how detailed it is, like him remembering punching another sailor and then re-remembering that he was punched back much harder. So many metaphors for life. And also love that he didn't lose his cig.

FYI, His clothes were blown off and it was important to show the power and REALITY (this was based on a true story) . Would you prefer he look like a genderless doll so you dont get aroused?
