- Nominated for an Oscar® for Best Animated Short at the 2012 Academy Awards
This animated short tells the story of a dapper young remittance man, sent from England to Alberta to attempt ranching in 1909. However, his affection for badminton, bird watching and liquor leaves him little time for wrangling cattle. It soon becomes clear that nothing in his refined upbringing has prepared him for the harsh conditions of the New World. A film about the beauty of the prairie, the pangs of homesickness and the folly of living dangerously out of context.
Directed by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby - 2011 | 13 min

I love the art style of this film. The scene of the town reminds me of an Edward Hopper painting.
I love this so much, still. The looks from animals, the expression in eyebrows, the prairie thunderstorm, the whole tone.
No surprise this was nominated for an Academy Award. Everything about it is brilliant.
It is touching and beautiful in lots of levels. 🏆✨💖
4:15 I have fallen in love with this man
I LOVE this film.
It is my all time favourite.
Thanks so much♡
Rich Cactus According to the credits, that song is called "The Cowboy's Last Ride". It appears to have been an original song, so I don't think it's available anywhere else...
I really like this film, it's funny and melancholy at the same time.
Amazing. Whoever made this needs to make a feature length movie!
Ye
What a beautiful film!
I love it, my late departed dad would of loved this lovely film.
Thank you so much.
I’m on a Tilby/Forbis run here! On to the next!
the music, the textures, the lighting, the ACTING! Wow, as an animator ( or noob animator ) I greatly respect this style and the work put into this and I cannot imagine how long it took to create all of this. Animating in this style is one of the best styles I've seen on the internet ever! Keep improving and you have my respect for your work!
Absolutely gorgeous! I really was blown away by the style of illustration. Congratulations and best of luck with the oscars!
I can't believe they didn't win the Oscar. They so deserved it.
Thanks, so meaningful and sad, to think that so many young men from the "mother" country sent were sent to the "colonies" to "make" something of themselves without the skills, labour force, etc ...Stephen Leacock's own father...
As an Edmontonian in Alberta, loved and enjoyed it.
Great work. How wonderful to be able to watch it before the awards!
Now that really justifies the award!
Absolutely lovely. Beautiful animation.
amazing compositions of every moment! LOVED the style and the emotional capture!...
I love the look of this.
A sumptuous work, such beautiful illustrations and movements. Deeply moving.
I loved the style of illustration!
I think this would be great to show in Canadian Social Studies classes to illustrate the transition Europeans went through to settle into Canada, while expecting way too much coming into the land.
Amazing work, where can the music be found? It's perfect.
Holy cow! The voice of Maximus IQ (Colin Fox) is in 3:08-3:14! Thanks for uploading thisshort, Canada!
my favourite part: the birds :)
Poetic. I love it.
This fellow reminds me of Bartleby the scrivener.
This is the most beautiful thing I've seen
If God _didn't_ want that particular bird to eat that particular gnat, they wouldn't have been put in the same place at the same time.
Luby Goy, a Canadian theatre and film actress is in this film. :D
Wonderful film!
is there a way that you could upload the subtitles ? at least in English. this beautiful shortfilm is on our list of films that we have to watch, for our "media" class at the University of Buenos Aires. I'd be much appreciated. there were some parts where I couldn't follow. :(
absolutely beautiful
Strange. Lovely.
Excellent! Thank you for sharing.
congratulations for your Oscar nomination!
The story was fine, but what i really loved of the film was the music! Really good choice.
i love the animation...
@buetforasif -- The man in the picture is Amanda's 'Uncle Bubbles' who died in World War I.
What's the song at the end right before the credits? It's haunting and lovely. I've been trying to find a full length version for weeks.
it's called the cowboy's last ride, don't know where to find it though, I'm sorry.
@@RussetfurTv OMG Hi I'm Ella from PEAI

It's a pitty it has no subtitles!
Amazing 🤩
How do the blurbs about comets relate to the story?
Mirrors the main character's own inability to fit in/be a part of the planet and his eventual downfall.
whats the orchestral song you used in the intro?
someone knows the song at the end?
Who is that person at the end of the credit?
What the title of final song plz?

I cannot praise this film highly enough. I saw it as part of the Oscar Nominated Shorts program a couple years ago and was absolutely galled that it did not win.
Here's my review of that program from back in 2012 www.examiner.com/review/animated-oscar-nominees-playing-indy-review
i'm here because #oscars

exposure. Its happens a lot here in Alberta. Its always fucking tragic, regardless of the circumstance and when it happened.
They all left for war in the western front in Europe, when war came knocking. As duty was never something they would trifle with.
ntb, what is the purpose for uploading this video.? it is of any commercial value? Is the producers for a profit?
