"Released as a single June 2021 as part of a new project called "Raga Shorts". The goal is to put out singles with short raga and raga inspired improvisations-a documentative snapshot of the greater journey of playing this music on the piano. I aim to record these on different pianos in different spaces with different levels of fidelity.
Shuddha Sarang is one of those ragas that definitely feels more challenging to adapt to a fixed pitch instrument like the piano. Every time I approach this raga and the process of approximating the beautiful meends at its core, new ideas need to be formed and old ones need to be abandoned. I’m always hesitant to release recordings of ragas like this and Mian Malhar as it never quite reaches the deepness that sliding instruments can get to. But music is always a process and documenting the process is an important part of being an artist and this was definitely closer than I’ve gotten before and not as close as I will get in the future. The composition I’m playing is a beautiful one by Pandit Shreeram Devasthali taught to me by Warren Senders." -Utsav Lal
