the entrance holes i have are placed closer to 1 side with consideration of any cool/cold air coming in which will chill the brood(being center where they naturally cluster). just a thought.
I want to build this style for my next hives. I like the idea of being able to super during a heavy flow, but the continuous comb for the brood chamber.
I'm hoping that this size and style of hive will work good for my area? I will need a few more seasons to know for sure. It will definately be interesting to see how this hive and the nine frame conversion hives compare over the next few seasons. This one with a 14 frame brood chamber and only one super. And the 9 frame brood chamber that I can stack as many supers as I need. Cheers
I only have an extractor that fits medium and deep Langstroth frames. And for my Layens and extra deep frames I just use the cut and strain method. I couldn't find a place in Canada to buy a layens size extractor. The closest place I could find was from Dr. Leo at Horizontalhives.com.
On my box in a box hives, I just slot or drill through the pink foam in the hallway. The bees don’t seem to care. Was there a reason you changed from the slot to the circle?

Cute designs--no color by numbers? Haha
You have very nice paintings on your hives ! ☼

Thanks for sharing, Matt!
Love the idea of putting a super on the Layens hive. As for the Layens frames, what extractors do you all use?

It was faster and easier to make. And If I wanted to try different size entrances I could just drill more holes or larger ones. Cheers
