    Still to this day Exhausted gives me chills. Probably the best song Dave's ever writen. Catchy, great melody, kickass guitar tone and a fragile voice... You can clearly tell what period of time Dave wrote the song in.

      yes, that combination of the slowpaced vocal on top op that chord-progression, gives it that mysterious feel about it. Also love that part where it breaks down slowly and suddenly it's back to the riff and fades out..It's a song I often go back to. Same with MIA from the 3rd record

    I still have this song on a cassette tape from the very broadcast Dave is talking about. It was the Pearl Jam pirate radio special. I recorded A LOT of good shit from that broadcast. The live set by SOundgarden was AMAZING. First time I ever heard "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard." When he played the Dave Grohl demos I was HOOKED right away. That's when I learned that Dave wasn't just a drummer in Nirvana.

    • @guidedby9
      @guidedby9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recorded this too, from the Detroit area way back when. Unfortunately I wore that tape out, and now it's lost, in several moves. There was also a funny Matt Lukin answering machine message to Eddie, trying to find out what neighbors have been using his trash bin. Then a call to Mike Watt, etc.

    • @mosesgarner2404
      @mosesgarner2404 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@guidedby9 That's right! I remember someone yelling in the background "WATT!WATT!" While Eddie V was trying to introducing a song or something lol and there was some weird home recording they played called 'Johnny Get Off of My jig' or gig? Not sure how they spelled it but it was a weird sound sculpture type thing with a little kid yelling JOHNNY!

    I think this song is Dave’s breaking point from nirvana, it’s definitely going for the feel, and it was written in Nevermind days, but it’s different enough that it sera it apart, it’s weird that it sounds like a farewell, a goodbye to something or someone, cold and slow, almost like they knew what was going to happen back then, kinda sad and freaky

    I always wondered how they got the super gritty sound on this version. For what it's worth, I get really close with an ES-125TDC into a super fuzz clone into a JCM900, though. It's such a great, gnarly, gritty, grungy distortion.
    I'd love to hear more about the "petrol can" used on the final version. I heard that it's an MS-2 pointed into a literal petrol can.

    • @mickroyster6442
      @mickroyster6442 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t remember where I read this but I think Dave said one time that to get that sound he was using a really banged up amp that was dying so he used that to get that really dirty sound

    • @mfohawk6779
      @mfohawk6779 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the demo it was the "blowing up amp", as for the album....I'm fairly confident in saying he was referring to the Fender "Amp Can" they marked for only a couple years in the 90's. It had an on/off distortion button that was pre-set.....no control of the effect. It has a unique blend of distortion and fuzz. While Dave was probably playing a different guitar, here's the sound on an old MIM Strat....judge the sound for yourself.

    • @NicoleKrawczyk
      @NicoleKrawczyk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, he always wanted to make mysic...it just so happened that he became the drummer in Nirvana. I believe he has mentioned before that Kurt wasn't always happy with his sound and that was probably all the more reason to be thinking what to do next...not that someone will die, but the band might end for him soon anyway...

    • @moodyx5626
      @moodyx5626 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regardless of whether you do or do not believe Kurt's passing wasn't of his accord, Nirvana was never going to last. Kurt was tired of the spotlight, and as evidenced by his successful career, Dave could never stay relegated to simply banging drums the rest of his music life. He had been in bands prior and there's no doubt he just wrote music to write music. It was just happenstance that his position as part of the biggest rock group of the 90s enabled wide release and exposure of his excellent solo work.
