One of the first videos I came back to after hearing of his passing. The cymbals section still makes me hysterical to this day! RIP to an absolute legend
@@Kryptor360 I know I'm way late and you might not see it or care anymore, but I'm just seeing this video for the first time today lol. Sometimes during recording engineers will make the drummer record the drums and the cymbals separately, because when you're mixing and putting effects on the drums, if you want to go hard on the processing of the drums you end up getting as much cymbals as drums in your drum mics, so it kinda ruins it and you can't go as hard on the effects as you may want. So if the producer has an idea in mind that will require a ton of processing on the drums it can be a good idea to do one take of just the drums and one take of just the cymbals so you can mix them separately. Usually it's the same drummer doing each part and overdubbing them though, it's the first time I see it with two drummers playing at the same time but in different rooms to isolate them from each other, that's crazy ahahah I love it. It's the perks of having two amazing drummers in a band
that part of the song isn't great for displaying what Nate does in the song. he has an ascending bassline in the chorus. listen at 16.30. Maybe its cause I play bass but I reckon that despite the more guitar players the band has had i've heard the bass more.
No, I agree. As an aspiring bassist (which means I'm shit), I've started listening to basslines through the mix. Dunno if it's something mental or not.
That's why Rope is such a great song because Nate's funky fill-in notes early in the song made the final cut. But at this point, is it really worth it for him to gripe? Sucks but Dave is the boss. I'm sure all the side projects Nate does helps balance things out.
I wonder if people can feel the Seattle influence in this song. There's hints of "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam" by The Vaselines which Nirvana brilliantly covered in Unplugged in NY.
Tiago C Yeah, but that Seattle influence is not just because they were actually recording that song in Seattle... I think it's impossible to be on the best band of the 90's and not be influenced by it on your next band...
When I found that Seattle was city 7, I then had to track down which song resulted for the city. It's probably the most captivating Foo song I've heard. It really has a unique vibe. It's emotions are all over the place, from hope to what I perceive to be a feeling of ending. Tons of nuance. I don't know why the song style surprised me, but it did. Then again, it comes from a place that I have no way of fully understanding. Literally and figuratively.. You guys haven't knocked my skull out of the park yet, (Yea, I'm a Nirvana hold-over) but I really like where your music comes from. So even though my tastes are on the heavier side of the spectrum (not metal.. just heavier), I feel like someday soon I'll see my skull flying over that fence. . When you guys decide that there's no reason not to go there, you won't be able to resist the temptation to kick the holy shit out of something. When you do, it's gonna be something special. hmmm.. I still have to check out Something From Nothing. The skull bashing may have already started!
This is all I wanted from the SH tv show. I just wanted to watch the Foos make an album, I wasn't really all that interested in the the history of each city. I am glad i found these videos!
Not sure why Ben's backing vocal ended up so low in the final mix. Like Butch said, his and Daves voice sound really nice together...but now you can hardly hear that he's in there.
Could someone please tell me what time signatures occur in this song? Seems like there are several but I'm having a hard time figuring out all of them.
the Gibson Dave plays sounds vintage,I just learned that its a limited edition ES 335,I love guitars and this one is becoming a favorite,I think Mr.Grohl may have something to do with the sound, just saying. This band has some of the greatest musicians alive.
cleary you should ignore your day job and obsess over the Foos like me. And dream of the trini lopez 335. I have a 79 walnut es335 TD, but it's not as nice, and just bought a cherry es349. i can't afford the Pelham blue 335, but it's pretty sweet too
Gergg Bergr Dave's said that specific original Trini is his main guitar on every Foo record. He claims that one guitar is THE Foo Fighters sound. He doesn't play it out live. His signature Gibson is a Trini copy of you can call it that, but it's new and has a more modern sound. The vintage Trini definitely has its own tone, especially that one.
"Empty Handed". It's a demo from the first Foos album. They finally released it awhile back on SONGS FROM THE LAUNDRY ROOM. Definitely check it out. It's got a great cover of "Kids in America"!
One of the first videos I came back to after hearing of his passing. The cymbals section still makes me hysterical to this day! RIP to an absolute legend
Two of the greatest drummers alive playing around like kids. Nothing better.
Laughed hard at the Taylor/Dave synchronized drumming. Awesome!
theblitzace I’m wetting myself 😂😂
I wonder why are they recording like that?, is a technique or something?
Im rewatching this just for that. RIP taylor

@@bidulus1 Oh man, thank you for answering. So overall it’s all about to get the best sound, good to know!
Empty Handed, what a monster song. Dave looks proud of that song. If I could write songs just half good songs than this one I would be fucking proud.
asdfgd I thought he was saying Indiana
Hey, quit judging yourself, man. I’m sure you’re heaps worse than you think.
Nate's like "please just command which boring root note I should play, and make sure you make it inaudible behind 3 guitars as usual"
Thank you!!! Couldn't agree more.

Um no.
12:45 - 14:18 funniest part. They were so close. RIP Taylor
Love it when Dave sings for real. You know, verses what he calls "screaming". He has a beautiful voice that I find comforting.
13:51 - Poor Butch trying to get these guys to focus. They are such toddlers, and I love it!
These videos make me appreciate Sonic Highways so much more. Thanks man!
Nah it’s a terrible album.
@@thegoodguy44 Not terrible, maybe just not as good as WL. I'd say 4/8 songs on SH are good, which is still a bad ratio, but those are fire.
@@thegoodguy44 then why are you here lol
@@thegoodguy44 come on, you dont even like THE FEAST OF THE FAMINE?
Sorry I cannot say that without screaming like hell
@@thegoodguy44 The series was far more interesting than the album
That moment with Dave and Taylor was gold! RIP 🕊 TH

The keyboard chords together sounds brilliant
Fucking Hypnotic

Plus the drums cymbals part is crazy awesome
Thanks for these, Miguel!
+Snrub no problem :)
12:45 Brothers doing a drum duet. Brothers from another mother.
They're just a bunch of big boys having fun.....love it!
I wonder if people can feel the Seattle influence in this song. There's hints of "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam" by The Vaselines which Nirvana brilliantly covered in Unplugged in NY.
Tiago C Thought I was the only one that heard that. It's that A chord in there at the end of the verse progression.
Yep!
Tiago C Yeah, but that Seattle influence is not just because they were actually recording that song in Seattle... I think it's impossible to be on the best band of the 90's and not be influenced by it on your next band...
Tiago C Totally! At 7:22 you can hear it pretty good. I actually felt this when I first heard it!!!
The Vaselines are from Scotland
Funny, he heard empty handed hear and decided "shit man why didn't we release that" and they released it a few months later on an EP. hahaha
RIP Taylor
Ben and Dave's voice amalgamated beautifully.
When I found that Seattle was city 7, I then had to track down which song resulted for the city.

Great vid about their recording process. Glad that they shared it.

Taylor’s laugh! 🤣💔
kurt would've been proud of you dave x
I love how Taylor doesn’t know what to do with his right hand during all my life so he just starts air drumming the symbols
One of, if not my fav track off the album
One of my absolute faves. Thanks so much!

Hey, i enjoied the SH documentary, it's interesting the strory and influence of each city in each song
Dave's face at the beginning, "fuck yeah man, rock on"
love the guitar sound for the open chords at 8:40
When Dave starts recording with "Big Red" is when a hint of the Grunge rawness is heard.
I love how Rami looks really excited while doing his part
Blackbird who wouldn't? I mean, must be a pretty hyping experience to record your "voice" for inmortality
Another awsome video! Thanks for posting. Love sonic hwys
Rami is fucking rad!!
Just LOVE this song!!

Awful music.
the bass line is amazing
Does Pat EVER stop smiling? I've never seen anyone enjoy their job more than him. :)
Ingrid Walker how about the he creators of South Park?
Best song on the album.
Pure magic.
I hear some Steven Wilson influence for the acoustic guitar track.
COMIX: Beyond the Comic Book Pages don’t think Dave knows anything about Steven Wilson but would be cool if this were true
Ben Gibbard was just the perfect fucking touch to this song.
