    This song was the first Gregg wrote after Duane's death and was part of his healing process. It was also the first time Dickey Betts played slide on a recording. Nobody knew he could play slide before this was recorded.

    Following the death of group leader and guitarist Duane Allman, the Allman Brothers Band returned to the studio to complete Eat a Peach, which was midway through production at the time of his passing. Much of the song's lyrical content deals with his death; Gregg Allman felt the subject "was the only thing I knew how to do right then." Allman had completed most of the song's music before his brother's death, but felt compelled to record it when bassist Berry Oakley and drummer Jaimoe asked about it. He proceeded to write the song's lyrics-which also concern soldiers returning home from the Vietnam War on a Steinway piano at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida, where it was recorded in December 1971. Guitarist Dickey Betts picked up slide guitar in the aftermath of the tragedy, and took time to make sure his performance on the song would be up to par. Allman later recalled that he remembered Betts practicing the slide part for the song on the airplane down to Miam

    After Duane unexpectedly died, every member of the ban struggled. Duane had pulled them together, locked the door, and told them they’d have to fight him to get out the door. Greg wrote this song really as an ode to his struggles and to his brother. Greg stepped up with the songwriting and leadership. As did Dickey Betts, taking over lead guitar and writing songs also. A beautiful song, but in the context it WWC written, even more so

    This song, of course the whole "Eat A Peach" album, brings a flood of memories. I was in my second year of college in San Jose, Ca. when this album came out. I couldn't get to " Tower Records " fast enough to buy it. What a fantastic album by a multi talented group of guys. This is a double album with " Mountain Jam " on the second side of both records. Great reaction guys. And thinks for reacting to the Allman Brothers. Take care.

    Was in a small, private club in Columbia, SC in the late 60s or early 70s. Around midnight, Duane, Greg and Jaimoe walked in after a concert in town. The local band quit playing and the three got on the stage and played for about 1 1/2 hours. Good times. Good memories. Very nostalgic to go back. Peace out.

    RIP Brothers Gregg, Duane, Berry & Butch..Born & raised in Queens, outside of Macon, NYC is the Brothers second home and we get a lot of Brothers related shows, and this one always hits .. been using this song for some music therapy since I was 15 (now 54). The important part of the line isn’t the “just get high” but the “leave your mind alone” part that prefaces it, cause that’s were it all starts .. love the channel, and specifically the music and production perspective the both of you bring.. music for the head & heart ✌️

    I was still a teenanger, when I found myself on Peachtree Street, which was Atlanta's street scene back in the day, selling the underground newspaper to tourists who came to see the show. People Can You Feel It, another Allman Brothers anthem, filled the airwaves. It was like the Haight Ashbury of the South.

    They played what was an unscheduled date at the Hofstra field house on long Island, after Duane's death..It was my second concert. I was 14. I particularly remember it because it was April 9th, '72. My birthday is the 10th. When the clock struck 12 I turned 15, and they were cooking still!..The place had to be 100 deg..They thought about breaking up the band after Duane's death, briefly..Thank God they didn't, 'cause they came out looking to show the world they weren't going anywhere..It was an amazing concert, and I'm sure a very emotional one for them..They definitely had something to prove to themselves, and did they ever!..Like I said, it was unscheduled, and you won't find it anywhere..I think it was to test things out, to get ready for the tour to promote this album..It's an amazing album!..Enjoy!

      Wow, that’s cool to read about your similar experience ! I also saw them that spring when I was 15 (New Haven) and my 2nd concert too. I was already a major fan and had bought the album for my first stereo system I bought used around the same time. The trajectory of the music scene was incredible back then ! Only wish I was a little older so I could made it to Watkins Glen.

    • @sjd5750
      @sjd5750 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tcanfield They came back to Hofstra the following November, and that you can find. I wonder if they played New Haven then. It drove me crazy that I could never find it because it was my birthday, and that specific birthday..I started to think I'd imagined it! Until I told that story a few years back and found someone who actually worked the show, and remembered it well..Then it all made sense. And for awhile I assumed it was their very first show after Duane passed. However, that wasn't true..They did at least one show in December, just a little more than a month after his accident. I'm not sure where now, but I think it was in Georgia. Which, again, would make sense..Either way, it made me an instant Allman's fan..Just blew me away. They played for over 3 hours, in that Gym, and the sound was unreal!..I've been to many shows in my life, and still, to this day, nothing could come close to that one..Can't touch it.

    In 1969 Duane Allman and a guy named Boz Skaggs did a song called "Loan me a dime" that y'all REALLY NEED TO HEAR...., Seriously. "Muscle Scholes Studio"

    Great, great, great album! One of the 1st albums I purchased. Still have it and occasionally pull it out and listen to it on vinyl.

    Hey guys. Love what your doing . I am enjoying watching you guys enjoy the music from my generation. Your playing alot of stuff I haven't heard in a long time and I'm loving it. Keep up the good work.

    Thank you Allman brothers band for being my Dad’s favourite band and for teaching me cool stuff- never forget the Ottawa Bluesfest July 11 2003 where we both saw them rock life to the fullest.
