Always wondered where this footage might be, thanks. The interviews, ads and Geno all intrigued me, but at was here that I fell for Dexys, went out and got what was a perfect album for the 16 year old I was.
I actually have my brother to thank for this one - by a bizarre coincidence he actually appeared on an episode of "Something Else" and has had various involvements with the BBC for many years since. He managed to get me an inhouse BBC compilation of the show's hi-lights and thankfully it included this!
Always loved Dexys - was an absolutely huge fan of theirs in my early teens. Seeing videos such as this later in life gives me such a nostalgic feeling. One thing that always puzzled me though was how different Kevin looked in the early days (80 and 81) - it's almost as if he has different facial features. Could just be me though! Thanks for your uploads, you've got some brilliant stuff on your channel.
Kevin did have a couple of nose jobs in the 1980's - which probably explains your perception. And thank you for your kind comments. Somebody once suggested that I'm such a Dexys completist that I've probably got a recording of Kevin Rowland blowing his nose. I replied (without thinking about the above subject matter) would you like the 12-inch or the 7-inch version!? Oops!
Seen quite a bit in my twenty-three years Ive been manic-depressive And Ive spat a few tears. Ive been spat on and shat on And made to eat soap Ive been working and shirking For what, I dont know. Rambling and gambling Hoping for more Ive been losing and boozing
But I dont know what for. If theres anyone there Looking down at me I think its time you picked my number I need some help you see Just draw a line State the date Give a time Anywhere Yours or mine Just tell me when my light turns green Its not that I dont believe in you Your works all round to see Its just that while youve been there doing good You havent left much time for me Just draw a line State the date Give a time Anywhere Yours or mine Just tell me when my light turns green.
As I said in the notes to this video, the harmony vocals throughout this song are performed by "an unidentified off-stage singer" - as they would normally have been sung by Kevin Archer who was 'unavailable' at the time. I'm going to throw out a completely random theory (for which I have no real evidence) as to the possible identity of the off-stage singer. As I also said in the notes I do not believe this was performed in November 1980 as implied by the TV graphics (though this may have been the broadcast date) - Mick Talbot had been with Dexys for a few months by November 1980 and yet Pete Saunders is on the organ for this performance. Also, Archer's temporary walk-out on Dexys was supposedly in around August of that year. My suggestion is that this may have been recorded around the time that Talbot replaced Saunders - and, just possibly, the off-stage voice is his. The "Tell me when my light turns" lines are sung quite distinctively on this recording - and having just listened to a recording of this song from one of the 2003 live shows (where Talbot definitely delivered those lines) I'd say there's more than a passing resemblance to that vocal style. I'm not sure why he would have performed off-stage - though, maybe (if he was still signed to his previous record company, for instance) there might have been contractual reasons. One other - completely inconclusive - piece of evidence which potentially supports this theory is that, in one of the only 1980 publicity shots of Dexys featuring Mick Talbot, Kevin Rowland and Stoker are dressed in the same long "trench-coats" they are seen wearing in this video... and in the Eighties you could pretty much identify which week it was from Kevin's current couture!
Any body seen a video of the guy who " warmed up"the audience during the first tour. He came on dressed as the SAS and insulted the crowd until they threw things at him in a rage. Then the band came on and the place went mad. Or is this just a dream i had?
Ah yes, a friend mentioned he'd witnessed that at a Dexy's gig - apparently an (American?) stand-up comedian who never spoke for about 20 minutes until the audience started throwing various items at him!
My favourite Dexys Midnight Runners song.
Brilliant live
Absolutely fantastic !
One of their best songs!
For me, this Dexys at their best.
Big Jimmy
Brilliant.
The best of the very best…
I love this song, it makes me happy 😊
The song that made me run out and buy this album when i was 17. Still sounds fresh.

At 2:30 the drummer starts leading a brilliant transition, so so good

This is before the brass section played second fiddle to the …fiddles 😊
Indeed - no strings attached.
Rowland tried to get brass boys to play strings, not an easy feat ...
where has your channel been all of my life ? but happy to see you come up in my feed ,
Did I just die and wake up in Heaven?
I do hope not!

Subliminal… Before all that average stuff on Too Rya Aye
Who sings the lyric at 1:51 as its not Kevin? No one seems to sing this when it's repeated in song. Yet this appears to be live? Thanks 🤙🤙🤘🤘🤘🤘

TOTP was not often live performances
Not T.O.T.P...youth programme, Something Else.
Where's Al?
Where's Kevin Archer?
As I mentioned in the notes, he'd had a bit of an 'altercation'... thankfully he rejoined in time to leave again and form The Blue Ox Babes!

It wasn't Keith Allen, was it? Sounds like the sort of thing he'd do!

Split up soon after
