- How accurate is the TV show House MD and medical dramas in general compared to real life? I dust off my old DVDs and give it a watch. I explain what’s happening on screen, breaking down the medicine and sharing some of my experiences as a real doctor.
Its been fun revisiting Scrubs, House MD and discovering The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, The Resident and ER!
I used to love this show as a medical student, so thought I'd revisit it knowing what I know now and see if it holds up!

The most unrealistic part of the episode is someone being able to afford to stay in a hospital for several weeks on an American elementary teacher's salary.
they dont kick out chronically ill patients for inability to pay, and teachers are unionized with good insurance back in the days before obamacare.

@@magdalene74 What happens is that IF you don't have health insurance, then the hospital usually has some type of charity to pay for you, but if not, then you'll get taken home.

I knew House was inspired by Holmes but I never realized the House/Holmes, Wilson/Watson thing.

Ulisse Paris Artuso Arthur Conan's Sherlock is not an annoying logician actually...and isn't even all that addicted to morphine..(it is rarely mentioned over the course of stories) and doesn't share a best friend level relationship with Watson on an emotional level...

It can actually be seen in an episode in maybe season 2 where a patient is outside and House and Wilson stand outside Houses building, talking. The house number can be seen behind them.

That's cause the show House is Based loosely on Sherlock Holmes which was based on a Doctor Doyle knew. (I believe was a mentor or teacher.)

I've always loved House, but my biggest complaint is the doctors actually running the lab tests themselves in a small room with like one microscope. Hello, there are lab professionals doing all of that for you 😂

I like that you let yourself get sidetracked from the medical review, like when you looked into the intro/theme, it allowed the video to flow. Was very interesting to watch, I might check out your 'The Good Doctor' analysis now :)

Expert reaction videos are always more fun when it isn't just pure facts about the area of expertise. A good balance makes it feel more like we are watching it with them.

I actually was having a weird symptom when I was a teenager, and I figured out it was due to one of my medications after watching an episode of house. My doctor had never heard of that medication causing the symptom I was having but she looked it up- and sure enough- House was right lol
What med and symptoms?
House is one of the few medical shows, imo, where the good drama and characters outweigh the inaccuracies. It's just accurate enough to suspend enough disbelief to allow me to enjoy the "puzzle" and characters in each episode.
So essentially, the medicine isn't that far off, but the hospital itself is super unrealistic.
Doctors said mostly the timelines were off drastically. ...symptoms would process a lot faster than real life.
I recall an episode where Cameron performed a caloric with a patient lying on their side so......Not so realistic.

Some religious groups observe strict dietary laws - not eating dead pig is a pretty common one. For someone in such a group, it wouldn't be unusual for them to not eat pork even if they eat other forms of meat. For a (practicing) Jewish patient, it would be reasonable to assume they haven't eaten pork.
House would be fired so fast because of his attitude towards the other staff members and patients in all honesty. Yes, he does amazing things, but he's honestly a jackass in the process. His attitude would put the hospital at so many risks for lawsuits too.

dont forget House only takes cases hes intrested in which is usually rare/ cases no one else wants. In house this is a special group that only handles these special cases and is only in this hospital. but yeah its fictional of course lol

My mom actually genuinely had to get brain surgery because there was a pig worm in her brain that had been misidentified by medical professionals as a brain tumor. They didn't figure it out until too late and it caused some damage. She's also a doctor though and is still practicing, so she wasn't left with too much of a deficit.
I think all the episodes were based on real cases, weird and uncommon as they may be.
My boyfriend also had a rare skin disease that could have been life threatening. The same one in one of the House episode. Doctors just couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him, but he was lucky to found one that diagnosed him correctly. Many years later now telling a doctor friend of ours, our friend’s literally had a jaw dropped moment because it was rare and hard to diagnose.

Dr Hope, I cannot believe you said that old people have more interesting stories. I'll have you know that when I was 5 I stuffed a blue bead from those sweet shop sweetie necklaces so far up my nose it was nearly in my brain and the doctors couldn't get it out without a huge and unnecessary surgery so they said I had to wait for it to dissolve. But then I got a cold so I had a runny nose and my fat ass nostrils spent 3 weeks dripping luminous blue snot. See If Doris can beat THAT story. 😂😂😂
(By the way I absolutely hate hospitals (THEY'RE FREAKY. Like on one floor there's a lady taking her dying breaths and on another there's a 30 year old man having a Wii Remote and a Bar of Dairy Milk removed from his ass) but I love your videos so much they're so insightful and you have such a soothing voice, keep up the great work!💕)
Then add that to the time when you(TINY) were 21 and had... then when you where thirty you (TINY)had... . Older people (usually) only have better stories as they have more life events to pick and choose from. Mind you blue snot at forty odd would be concerning
Robyn Wilson OMG!! When I was 5 I did the same thing!! It didn’t go up my nose that far, the doctors were worried that it would go into my lung and I’d get a lung infection. They had to put me under and do some weird procedure. Apparently it was crazy enough that they brought about 10 med students in to watch. lol
My sister put a small bead in her nose and she was 5 too(maybe) and then my parents had to go to the doctor. Luckily no surgery was needed the doctor was able to take it out some way. AND I was in my school during all this. Just imagine coming home from school and getting to know something this crazy happened😅
My baby sister did this a lot when she was younger. Somehow she often found chewing gums to push up her nose, after a while it started smelling so bad. I'm glad she no longer does this as she is 20 years old now :D :P

In the US, lab coats are normal for doctors and dentists. Also something to consider is House isn’t just a doctor, he’s the Dean of Diagnostic Medicine. This isn’t a normal hospital but a University hospital (it’s fake, of course) based on the hospital at Princeton University, specifically Princeton Plainsboro Hospital. Also his team aren’t trainee doctors, they’re all graduated and employed by the University’s hospital.
House isn’t the dean of medicine. Cuddy is
Exactly and I also think people forget that House is rarely the first doctor someone goes to. He's the doctor people go to when every other doctor doesn't know whats going on. So the fact that he deals with a lot of rare cases makes sense.
Dr House is a Nephrologist, yet rarely had a case involving the kidneys. Dr Foreman is a Neurologist, yet is rarely the Dr performing brain surgery (typically performed by Neurologists, when required). Dr Chase is a specialist in Immunology, yet appears no more specialized with related issues than any other Dr on the team. Dr Taub was a cosmetic surgeon, which wouldn't benefit the diagnostic team for anything more than skin disorders. I don't know if any other team members had any specialties, which may play to their strengths, to not confuse horses and zebras. One thing to learn from watching House M.D. is that doctors can be, and often are fallable and wrong.

I'm a nurse that works in a hospital, just started watching your videos! To answer your question about why so many doctors, we do actually have several consulting doctors if a patient has problems involving multiple systems. For example, a patient with COPD, an arrhythmia, and ESRD on dialysis will be seen by an internist or hospitalist as their main attending, a cardiologist, pulmonologist, and nephrologist
He probably meant 4 doctors looking after 1 patient. We have MDT here, too in the UK. But it's the fatct that they haven't got any other person to look after.
FYI: If I recall correctly, they only had the rights to Teardrop for airing in certain markets so they used music composed by a staff composer for the international versions and then the DVD\streams as well. The show now resides on NBC who I believe uses the Teardrop theme because it's an American broadcast channel :)
It isn’t necessarily traditional to have four doctors but that was slightly the premise of the show he was a diagnostician to rule all diagnosticians he was the last man they went to. which for somethings is realistic in the sense that he would have a team because it was at this point a group effort which does happen with certain cases in the US that I’ve read about
Also, as far as I'm aware, Princeton-Plainsboro is a teaching hospital and they are his residents, so he is essentially their teacher. Which would explain all the quizzing he does

100,000 views! Thank you for all the comments and shares; the response has been super. Obviously this is a testament to the amazing show and not the fact I did a video on it! Before I became a doctor shows like this were the only real insight I had into the profession, so this is why I wanted to share my thoughts now. Just a quick clarification as I've had a bunch of people commenting the same thing...
House is a genius and runs a Diagnostic Department which brings in lots of money and explains why he has lots of doctors and can get away with being rude. I take this as a given that people understand this as it is the whole premise of the show. The point of my video is to explain things for fellow House fans who are interesting in how the medicine / hospitals compare to real life.
Dr Hope's Sick Notes you didn't say if the diagnosis is medically plausible. Or if you've ever heard of such a case?
Good question. The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis is rare but certainly does happen! I've never seen it. There was a discussion about this on Reddit so I'll summarise. The MRI scan would have confirmed the diagnosis, hence in the story the patient had an anaphylactic reaction so they couldn't get the scan. Also after treatment people are still likely to have some scarring on the brain therefore long-term symptoms such as seizures.

In Canada our doctors also tend to wear white lab coats. If a doctor worked on a patient with sleeves rolled up it would be considered unprofessional.

Anna Saxton it's all due to infection control protocols. there aren't any white coat ceremonies in uk med schools either since no one wears a white coat as a doctor.
Cody Wu makes sense. Just crazy that I’ve never heard of that. Why does short sleeves reduce infection risk? I guess just living in the US I associate bare arms with being unsanitary.
I'm a prolactinoma & Cushing's disease patient. Got my diagnosis pretty late because it's "rare". 🙄 i had to change so many neuros and endocrinologists to finally get a diagnosis. I'd love to have a doc like house. He would have diagnosed someone like me correctly. I think this disease was featured in one of the episodes. Every time i was dismissed because this illness is so rare it couldn't possibly me be. It seems they're taught maybe they'll go through life without ever seeing a single patient having such diseases. Rare doesn't mean non existent. Many others from my support group continue to experience challenges with close minded docs who think rare means they'll never see one in their lives

Question; If the patient has a high security lock that is too difficult to pick, do you bring a battering ram or do you have training in how to kick a door down, or both and which one do you prefer?
Smashing a window doesn't sound like a good idea if you're bare below the elbow. You could get some nasty cuts.
Do you mean paramedics? Paramedics uniforms have coats which are long sleeved. Not white coats - like outdoor coats . There shirts are short sleeved though. I guess it's different for paramedics since they spend time in colder conditions than ward staff. I could be wrong but I imagine they also come into less contact with patients who are ill and moreso those who are injured.

I'm not a doctor or a med student, but I'm pretty certain it's mentioned a few times in the show that House's set up is special because he's exceptional.. he gets to have a team to help him work..
You've certainly earned a new subscriber, I love learning random medical facts and really enjoy medical dramas, but I also enjoy knowing how accurate they are, hence why I loved critical the 2015 medical drama about an emergency department, if you haven't checked it out I really recommend it.

Yesss. Been wanting a doc to comment on House. Hope it’s a good one, here we go!
Regarding white coats in the USA: medical students wear white coats that come to their waists. They get them during a white coat ceremony that signifies matriculation into med school. Typically you sew on a patch onto the breast pocket of the coat signifying the school that you are going to.
Residents get coats that go to the mid thigh. They have huge pockets for carrying around all of your cheater books and cards that contain medication doses, etc (at least back in the day we used them for that; I bet there's apps for that now). In the hospitals that I worked at they were mandatory; your name was embroidered on to the breast pocket.
When you graduate if you choose to wear a white coat it is full length, ie to the knees. I never wore one. I was a pediatrician and didn't want to scare the kids.
So there's a lot of tradition that goes along with the white coat and it has very little to do with protecting clothing or preventing infection and is more of a uniform that shows the educational level of the doctor.
We don't roll up our sleeves. We learn a lot about infection precautions but sleeve rolling isn't part of that. I would have been awful cold during my night calls if I hadn't been allowed to wear a sweater with my scrubs!

Dr Hope's Sick Notes Are the terms “white coat syndrome” and “white coat hypertension” used in the UK? I looked it up, and I saw references for both terms being used, but given that the condition is derived from the common use of white coats in the US (and some patients exhibiting anxiety in the presence of doctors), it’d be curious that the terms are used in countries that do not use white coats!
Great video! If you're gonna do any more of these I'd recommend staying away from pilot episodes as most shows are usually trying to find their footing and may make changes to the writing style (which will obviously impact the characters, dynamics, world-building, etc). I know House keeps the puzzle-box thing going but pilots are usually pretty poorly representative of the most (good or bad) a show has to offer.

i'm no doctor, but i AM a trained lab technician, which includes labs working with bio hazards.
the long sleeved lab coats you see lab workers and doctors wearing are specifically designed to protect the wearer from spilled fluids (they soak, but slowly enough for them to be removed before something seeps through in most cases) but they are also made of materials which can be washed in boiling water to disinfect them on a regular basis, this is especially important when working in a lab that handles pottential bio hazards, but having lab coats that are "low on germs " (i hate saying steril, because nothing is) is also good for the patients.
The whole thing about House being unrealistic for leaving right at 5 and back-talking his boss is COMEPLETELY missing the point. House's conduct is very clearly not representative of most doctors; it's part of his character. He doesn't do things the way he's supposed to, he does things his way and forces everyone else to deal with it because they know he almost always ends up solving the case and saving the patient.
I COMEPLETELY agree. In the video I say if you go into medicine thinking you'll leave at 5pm; that's not realistic, and if you speak to people rudely you will have a rocky career. Both of which are also true :) thanks for your comment.
Dr Hope's Sick Notes It's also stated that this is the ONLY place willing to hire him. Cuddy spinning House to look like a super genius and ergo more patients and more revenue. But of course anyone willing to leave for 50$ isn't sick lol.
Xeran King Cuddy doesn't have to spin anything. House is a genius and within the series' universe he's often the only doctor in at least the state of New Jersey if not the entire US that is able to solve a lot of the cases he has to deal with. That doesn't change the fact that his absolute arrogant behaviour has let to him being fired everywhere else and nearly got him fired in the show several times over as well. Cuddy (and later Foreman) is the only one willing to put up with him and his unbelievable success rate is the one argument she has to the hospital board and House himself has for himself to the medical board in order to keep his licence regardless of the stuff he's pulling.
Loura Canisara i always thought he was so amazing that cuddy let him get away with so much because of it. He could do most things people cant. In some episodes she toted on him. He knows he can do whatever because hell always have a job somewhere
It's like anything else on TV. I'm a chemist and some of the stuff I hear on TV shows makes me laugh it's so absurd. They always mispronounce or jumble the names of things that people have used as poisons to murder people and that's just the start of it. Almost everything about chemistry that get portrayed in TV and movies is laughably wrong.

Shadow Less, I despise BB. It has done more to damage the reputation of home chemistry than any other single thing in the 21st century. So I haven't watched too much of it. Some of the chemistry I've heard of coming from that show is technically correct. However, they really do everything they can to water the chemistry down. The thermite from the Etch-A-Sketch is a good example. They made it so complicated when in reality you can order powdered aluminum and iron oxide off ebay or amazon or any one of several other online companies who sell that kind of stuff to the general public. The using hydrofluoric acid to dissolve a body is another bit of stupid. That kid would have exposed himself to enough HF to hurt himself. Wearing a rag over your face is going to so precisely nothing to protect you from HF. They should have dissolved the body in boiling sodium hydroxide.

When it comes to "people who've seen a bunch of doctors who can't figure out what's wrong", first thing an comes to mind is the daughter of my former prof, who was 17 at the time. Can't remember what it turned out to be, but it took like a month in the hospital before they had stuff worked out for her.

They say in the show that the diagnostics department was only created for House, its not a thing outside Princeton Plainsborough.

I love this! I absolutely hate watching veterinary dramas due to the inaccuracies. It's fun to see a MD disect different dramas and explain how they are accurate or not. Good job!
Great video! It’s interesting for me to watch this cause i have the point of view of a patient as a couple of years ago I spent the best part of a year in the hospital, like actually sleeping there and I’m only in my late twenties. I had a very unusual case with a lot of post op complications (had 4 emergency surgeries) that had my doctors stumped, obviously they tried to treat me with medication first but I wasn’t responding. I remember after my first surgery, my surgeon told me he was actually consulting with doctors from the US (I live in the UK) and everything. I remember many times feeling like those patients in Dr House and wishing Dr House was real so he could come sort me out with some miraculous diagnosis. No offense to all the doctors and nurses that treated me though, they did amazing, literally saved my life. To me the most unrealistic thing about these shows, as you also pointed out, is how it makes it look like the doctors do everything, usually you only see the doctors early in the mornings when they’re doing rounds with consultants and not all mornings, especially not on weekends. Mostly the nurses and health care assistants are the ones you interact with the most as a patient, and the ones who wheel you to do exams like MRI’s or X rays is someone else (not sure what their work title is). And I remember that I was literally the youngest patient in the ward, almost everyone else was older then 60 years.
I believe it's hinted at in later episodes that the other doctors in House's department work on their own cases in their down time. I vaguely recall a few episodes that start out with one of the other doctors approaching House with "their" case to try to get him interested. He, personally, only takes the really interesting, and thus really hard, cases and needs the whole team.
Cuddy also mentions at one point that the only reason the hospital even has a Department of Diagnostic Medicine is to attract House, who in turn attracts high-value cases to the hospital.

I know this is a really old video at this point, but I just discovered the channel recently and have been binging videos. As a House MD fanatic in my younger years, I always loved the Massive Attack "Teardrop" intro, so when Dr. Hope looked it up because the version he was watching didn't have it, it made me pause the video and sent me into a Massive Attack listening spree, lol. Loved this Reaction!
I just discovered your videos and I find them really entertaining and informative! They’re awesome! I think though that the reason they would write the team investigating the patients’ houses was more of a relation back to Sherlock Holmes. Holmes constantly invaded peoples space and did things that wouldn’t have been considered by proper law officers. The team themselves always feel very uncomfortable about being asked to break in, but House pushes for it because he is convinced it will help them/him find their answer. Jonathan Jimenez It is a teaching hospital, but the reason House has an entire team is because he's in charge of the highly specialized Diagnostics Department. It's a fictional department since every doctor is a diagnostician. But since House is so gifted at diagnosing the undiagnosible, he is granted a department that works on cases that bring in prestige, and thus donors and funding. Unfortunately, that becomes a problem to anyone who actually meats House.

I tried watching Sherlock Holmes but I found it too unbelievable - like, House can make 1-in-a-million diagnoses from HAM, but Sherlock watching 10 TV's at once? Inconceivable! lol I actually realized that I really just like *medical* dramas. Breaking into houses I'm sure was due to House's experience with "everybody lies"; if they got permission to enter their living arrangements, then things could be altered, changed, or hidden. But yes, the most unbelievable aspect is the team doing all their own diagnostic procedures, including but not limited to, brain surgery lol. And it turns out, while Chase is a general surgeon, he's not Board Certified *gasp*.
I love the fact that the intro has been chosen for the constant heartbeat.

My mum worked on the Original London's Burning as a costume designer and she is a big fan of House so I showed her this video. She remembers that whole spike thing from the series and remembers nearly freaking out because of how realistic it all seemed. Needing to go and take a minute until the director reminded her that they make these shows for people doing the jobs in real life to relax and watch in their free time. She just talked for like an hour about it. I think she's a fan of yours now. :)

This is funny. I remember as a child I loved watching Londons Burning, I think it was always on at either 9 or 10pm and that was my bedtime. I'd have to beg my mum to let me stay up 😂
It was all before my time, but she recounts stories every so often that make me so jealous. I am also going into the TV industry and a Director/Producer, so it's the feel of these random stories that I am excited to happen to me as well.
In Portugal doctors also use white coats and their sleeves aren't always up, but I've worked in the UK for 5 years and I don't recall any doctor wearing it..! Loved the comment, glad this came up on my suggestions, I'm subscribing 😘

The most unrealistic thing about this is there are 4 doctors for one patient. In the US you will be lucky to even get 1/4 of a doctor lol
Yep. Set in an empty, and I mean EMPTY, ER for 3 hours with a massive inner ear infection that I knew was going to rupture my ear drum if I didn't get antibiotics. When I did finally see the doctor, he gave me hydrocodone and sent me home. 4 AM to 7 AM I sat in the ER only to return at 11 PM that night with a ruptured ear drum. But they got their two ER bills out of it.
@@breannadeal8610 i doubt they were not busy.... like doctors just sit back there and would make you wait. Also why did you let your ear infection get that bad in the first place? You can go into any doctors place not just an ER to get an exam and medication for your ear infection. Some places you can do walk ins too.
you trying to make it sound like they purposefully didnt treat you just so they could get more money out of you is highly unrealistic. Blame yourself for letting it get that bad in the first place. maybe next time you will take care of something earlier.

Gallifreyan Refugee You’re kidding, right? Ear infections can have an acute onset, even in adults. Given that this person went to the ER at 4AM, the only option at that time of day was the ER. They may have not even experienced symptoms earlier the day before to go to their primary clinician or to urgent care. It is ridiculous to suggest they are to blame for the perforated eardrum. Obviously we don’t know what was happening from 7AM to 11PM, but they may have delayed the next visit based on what the ER doctor said and/or temporarily feeling better because of the hydrocodone… in essence, having a false sense of recovery, only to later reflect that things got worse, and their first concern had been correct.
I’m not automatically blaming the first ER doctor though. The exam may not have indicated a need for antibiotics. In fact, most ear infections resolve without them. But they’re the professional with the otoscope, and your go-to is blaming the patient? I get it, you didn’t like their commentary implying ineptitude and scamming by the hospital. Nevertheless, blaming them for what transpired is lame.
@@katvtay Its the ER they have to take people by importance. Ear infection probably didnt rank very high. do i think he/she had a bad experience...sure...do i believe all that was said no. Doctors and such dont just sit around doing nothing just to make people wait.
i also posed her/him waiting as a question...why did they wait so long? Usually something thats gotten so bad its about to burst an ear drum takes some time. People also waiting to go in to see someone is also common. so dont act like its outrageous for me to question that.
my Go to is not taking everything the spouted at face value. half their story sounds embellished.
im not saying the system is perfect or every one in the medical field is super good and honorable. Im not saying that misdiagnosis dont happen(which btw they do no matter what country you go to) but come on about having to wait while doctors sat around and did nothing....

Remember the episode where a man in his sixties (i think) woke up from a 20 year choma, stood right up, put on a tie and walked away with no problems?
they explain in that very episode why his muscles aren't atrophied. Watch it again...also, he's only up for a day before he will slip back into a coma. And the medication used to wake him up had serious risks for side effects but fortunately he didn't have any.

Yeah, the point wasn't that he could never have woken up the point is that people who have been bedridden for a month have trouble standing, while this guy just easily whips himself out of bed and walks on like it was nothing.
In the moment of MRI contrast to see brain's vessels, the type of dye for contrast is gadolinium chelates, a paramagnetic substance, delivered in doses of 0,1 to 0,2 mmol/kg, which is a very very low dose in comparison with iodized contrast used in CT scans. The chelate of gadolinium is used in many occasions in patients with an adverse reactions to iodized contrast because anaphylactic reactions is almost zero (0,004 to 0,7%). The most severe problem with this substance is systemic nephrogenic fibrosis that appears in patients with Chronic renal disease. It is a detail but always is good to explain so as not demonize it.

Speaking of the "huddle" being more of a teaching thing, the hospital they work in is an actual training hospital, and while House's underlings are his team, and full doctors in their own right, he's also technically training them in diagnostic medicine.
I love how how in this show the doctors are the nurses, the respiratory therapist, and everything in between
I spent a lot of time in the hosp ital for two years. So in some aspects (Especially with how they operate) I can see the flaws. But it was a great show! But I've seen both attractive and non older doctors. But most of the younger ones were nurses and not specialist. Also I see specialist. They don't even get to my appointment on time, let alone leave on time!
Sorry to hear you've spent a lot of time in hospital, hope you are on the mend. Yeh it's a cracking TV show, probably why it had so many seasons and think it inspired a lot of people to consider applying for medicine.

One of the most inaccurate things about House is you never hear patients randomly screaming in the background. Last time I was hospitalized there was this other patient in the room across from me who was ALWAYS screaming or yelling about something. I didn't sleep for three days lol

I’m 19 years old, was diagnosed with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia at the old age of 15, when nearly everyone with it is diagnosed in infancy or a bit older. I’ve gone through three CF sweat tests(and many, many other tests when they had no clue what I had), had my eardrums ripped out from my fourth setof T-tubes, which then never healed & had to have two full tympanoplasties at 11. I’ve had 11 surgeries total, soon to be 12, and 9 PICC lines. I am now hospitalized approx. three times a year due to pseudomonas infections.
And that’s not all! due to the pseudomonas infection, before I was diagnosed at 14, they put me a round of flouroquinalones x3, which then triggered my now severe Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which causes a whole other set of issues like moderate-severe s-curve scoliosis, severe chronic pain, weird veins which make peripheral IVs that don’t blow almost immediately impossible, tachycardia, and the best one: inability to take the only oral drug (flouroquinalones) that treat pseudomonas, which means tobramyacin is the only other option.
Anyway lol great video, I love watching people pick apart hospital shows as I like to do. I can’t watch them anymore because being a patient so much has made me notice too many issues with them!
Ham and shellfish (contrast dye) are not kosher. I wonder if that was intentional considering the Jewish theme of the pilot.
It was intentional, if I remember correctly House realized that the patient wasn't actually Wilson's cousin because she ate ham, hence not Jewish. Wilson just said that to get House to take the case.
That's why Foreman mentions the ham in the first place, because he realises Wilson was lying about the patient being Jewish. Which triggers 'You idiot' comment from House.

I felt like I made it when I saw one of my rare conditions featured as the diagnosis. I thought to myself I am rare enough to be in a house episode. Most cases of EDS (it really depends on the type and where you fall on the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, EDS spectrum; every case of EDS is different and can range from very mild to very severe) are not life-threatening but are life-altering. Ihave HEDS/VEDS (with 20 co-morbid conditions from that), Central Adrenal Insuffiencey (rare but completely unrelated to EDS), and Exocrine Pancreatic Insuffiencey (rare and also completely unrelated to EDS). I take 20+ medication and I brace my joints because I have 150+ dislocations a day and my right shoulder has been dislocated for 4 years straight. I have an ileostomy, feeding tube, and central line (for TPN, IV fluids, and IV therapies). I have been told by every doctor I have seen for the 2 years (I have had a progressive case of EDS and it has gotten worse and worse and was triggered by puberty initially), that I am the worst case of EDS they have ever seen. On the spectrum I fall into the severe to very severe side. It reminds me of the phrase that is oten told to healthcare proffessionals, "when you hear hoofbeat, think horses not zebras." Essentially it just means to remind healthcare professionals particularly medical students and people fresh out of medical school to think of the common things before the rare things. People with EDS refer to themselves as zebras because of this. However like I said I have been told I am a very severe case of EDS or that I am approximately 3 standard deviations above the normally effected population of people with EDS or whatever applicable conditions. I was told in January by my ICU doctor(I was in the ICU for septic shock and acute kidney failure due to my sepsis) that I am not a zebra, I am a unicorn (which I love only because I like unicorns). I do have about a dozen healthcare proffesionals, doctors, and specialists. no joke and when I have been in the hospital they have done round table discussions about me trying to figure things out but that would only happen once or twice in the whole admission and not every day all day

we have transitioned my care to palliative care meaning we focus on my quality of life, maintaining my baseline and treating symptoms.
With that all being said I am enjoying my life as much as I can and focusing on making memories.

Given the talk about infection and sleeve length etc, you should do House the episode 'Maternity'. Also what about doing some British shows, like Casualty? Longest running medical drama, and you could talk about the differences between the NHS and the American system. Love this series!
