      That was great @andrewgoldheretics I would agree there is a war for the western culture, and woke will not stand up to Islam. Christian values that built western countries will not stand against Islam when so many are happy to use what it has created, without the discipline to pass it on to future generations. Calvin is right, a new world is being created while we are asleep at the wheel as we allow crazies and ideologues drive decision making.

    25:58 white English Brit here, did 18 years in London from 2004 to 2022, it went from cosmopolitan to mainly Islam - at least in the NW8 area where I lived. Awful.
    Mostly Muslim migrants are able to be housed there, claiming close family ties to the are via previous immigrants, so they get the social housing in zone 1/2 area. The council are filled with their ilk, helping each other. Then those working pay thousands to live besides them (that was me) while they don’t work, don’t talk English, act as if they still live in the Middle East. Then the shops go their way, the schools are filled with their offspring - and you look around as a native white Brit and it no longer looks like England. So you leave….

    34:25 Think Calvin missed the mark here. The second half of that Ephesians 5 teaching is, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”, and “in this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.” The church teaches male headship, but it’s the sort of headship that Christ displayed, servant leadership. Women aren’t being asked to unquestioningly obey a man who treats her like a slave - they’re being asked to respect and serve a man who in turn is giving up his life to serve her, putting her needs before his own. It’s a pretty radical ask - not what a bloke who just wanted to sit and be brought sandwiches would have written. CS Lewis puts it pretty well in The Four Loves: “Is it not clear that this teaching is most faithfully lived out in that man whose marriage is most like a crucifixion?”

    • @catherinehume9193
      @catherinehume9193 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Absolutely. The way I have see. It explained is as a perfect balance. The woman obeys the man but the man would rather die than do anything to hurt the woman so it is a perfect balance in the way people in the Middle East 2000 years ago would have accepted equality between husband and wife.

    • @RuthRandoms
      @RuthRandoms 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I agree, saying we are here to serve men and not here to serve God, as a single woman am I supposed to walk around serving all men I meet??!! He hasn’t explained it very well and nor did he emphasise that women do have equal value to men - or maybe he does think we have an inferior role, many Christians do think we don’t directly serve God. We do.

      It is called complementary, men should love their wives and wives serve the family and community under the leadership of their husbands.
      Feminism as a liberal ideology (meaning that freedom and equality are the moral centres) is not compatible with Christianity at all, to which slavery itself is not immoral but rather a temptation to it, in much the same way as any having power over another may be tempted to misuse it and thus must be restrained by morality.
      Christianity is hierarchical and patriarchal (God is the supreme patriarch and as a result the hierarchies imitate that relationship in form and function), it is a religion of bonds and responsibilities, not of freedom and desire.

      Nah, I am an atheist. I have no trouble fiding truth, love and meaning in my life. But where many people go wrong is that they call themselves atheist and then think they can be done with it. With being an atheist and/ or free thinker comes the responsibility to think about everything, and to think well you need to inform yourself well. And to inform yourself well you need to read, watch, learn and much more. Not everbody wants that. For some people it is better to just believe in something, for others it isn't. Let's make sure that for the people who just want to believe in something, something good is available. But it is not the only way...

      An old feminist here as well.
      People today do not understand the basics which we fought for. That we could not get a constitutional amendment in the US was only because of the time. What we fought for was needed.
      However, he did make one good point,, women today who choose to stay home and raise children are looked down on.
      I stayed home when my children were young, got my degree as an adult, and then went back to work.
      I was demeaned, berated, and honestly nullified as a woman .. by other women if I said I was a homemaker.
      If I said I was a trial paralegal applying to law school.. suddenly I was acceptable!!
      Unluckily even a good much needed idea can be taken too far.
      Sadly, in some ways it has. Women have the right to choose what path they take and should not be judged or looked down on because it's not the path you want them to take.

    • @annal2740

      Completely agree no woman should be looked down on whatever path they choose. Interestingly I got the opposite, women criticising me for going back to work after had a baby, saying things like 'you'll miss out on their first steps' and really cruel things like that. I'm the kind of old school feminist who believes both men and women should have the choice to stay at home with the kids or go out to work. Not that many men want to stay at home with their kids because it's bloody hard work and it's so low status in society.

    I listened to this today while working. I was bought up in religion, very strict Baptist church, hell fire, damnation, and the apocalypse were front and centre, old testament was read as much as new testament. I am now an atheist and have been since I was 14 yrs old, I am now 49. The conviction Calvin has is what you would expect from a man of the cloth, the unwavering belief in what he's read in the bible is still puzzling to me. He tried to downplay the importance of the old testament to religion and I think this because it's not the look the Christian faith wants now, they're trying to soften the vengeful cruel god of the old and replace with a kind god of the new testament. I struggle with an intelligent person, as he appears to be, accepting that this book is the absolute and utter truth and should be believed regardless of how fanciful it is. A lot of religious people wanted to ban Harry Potter because of the magic, but what on earth is being resurrected from the dead if not magic? What's the difference between believing in god, jesus, the holy spirit and believing in say tinkerbell, the tooth fairy or easter bunny books have been written about them also. From my personal experience religion is about control and fear nothing more.

My Grandparents were church goers, but I was too young to ever understand anything before they passed. How do I find God if I can't even begin to believe he exists? I'm not trying to be funny here, this is a genuine dilemma, I at this point in my life just do not believe, and I have absolutely no direction, no hope or spiritual fulfillment am I to always feel so empty? I ended up realizing that the burden of proof rested with God (if He existed), but that proof might not satisfy the demands of empiricism because the spirit is another plane of existence.
      So I prayed, “If you exist, and you want me to be a good person, then you should want to help me to be a good person. I want to be able to like people as much as I like dogs.”
      The first answer was a sensation I can’t describe, with the word, “*Gratitude. Gratitude.*”
      It took about five years of tentative searching before I realized that I really did believe in God, and the supernatural joy that followed felt like my feet weren’t touching the ground, and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I’ve heard a few other converts describe this feeling.

And it’s just nonsense to think having kids is fulfilling for every woman. It’s mostly drudgery. I’m sure it works for some that way but it’s soul destroying for many of us.
    Or saying that men are more logical and women are more emotional, that’s simply not true. Men are extremely emotional but they tend to experience every emotion that isn’t happiness as anger and therefore they tamp it down. Women are more easily able to label different emotions and express them, usually. You know men have high emotionality because of all the crimes they commit, when they don’t suppress their anger.

What I wonder is this: In what ways did the Pre-Christian beliefs of Europeans inform how they processed, interpreted, and ultimately accepted the Judaeo-Christian ethos? After all, nothing just 'happens'. There had to be something unique about how that particularly European strain of Paganism gradually morphed into Western Judaeo-Christianity as we understand it today. I don't think many people ever ask that question. Because Western Christianity is doubtless not the same as the original Middle Eastern Christianity. There is 'something' in it that is uniquely of the West, and uniquely of the soul of Europe and that is far, far older than merely the last 1000 years.

FROM CHRISTIAN COUNTRIES....ITALY, GREECE, if Any others I don't remember...the families who came here integrated into society's norms. They studied and spoke English. Elders who did not speak English were CARED FOR BY THE FAMILY TILL DEATH..... They brought their culture, imported and sold their food, opened restaurants and sold their food .. they INTEGRATED INTO THE AUSSIE NORM......I'm 69, I had good ethnic friends all my life, including native people's....We do have a large Muslim community, slightly radical but overall integrated.......But our government needs overhauling..... In Hebrew there is a word "moed", which means God's appointed times....there are the 7 main festivals in Judaism which moed alludes to, then there is another of God's moedim..the Sabbat, then there are also those times which you've just experienced and to which Calvin alludes...these are God's appointed ( and annointed ) times. I am not Jewish but I've been studying Judo/Christianity over the past 18 months....reading and learning the Tanakh and the NT from Messianic Christians has been a blessing. If you need to believe in an afterlife and a divine plan to be comfortable then religion is your only option; taken in small quantities the westernized version of Christianity is probably the least damaging. If you don't need to believe in an afterlife and are comfortable with uncertainty and self direction then religious belief should be avoided. What it takes to be a good person and live a satisfying and beneficial life is not a mystery.

      @@adrianrentz5515 Just googling it already makes me know the writer doesn't know what they are talking about. "Atheism is a belief system." No, atheism is the lack of a belief system. "No one can scientifically prove that god doesn't exist." Atheism doesn't necessarily mean the belief that there is no god, lacking the belief of a god is enough already. Atheists don't need to prove anything. Theists believe in a god, the burden of proof is on them, not the other way around. "Therefor atheism is a faith system." Faith is the belief in something without evidence, many atheists need evidence to believe something. "It also pinpoints the flaws in Darwinian evolutionism." LMAO evolutionism. Using anti-scientific rhetoric just makes it another level of stupid.
      Also, even if god does exist, that doesn't prove Christianity right. It could also be that Islam is right. Or Judaism. Or any of the monotheistic religions. Or it could be that any of the existing religions have the whole thing wrong.

    While I can’t disagree with him about Christianity-as-such (as I am not as familiar with it as him) his account of the birth of ‘woke’ is lazy and badly thought out. He seems to think Marxism and liberalism are the same thing, when the former existed (in its original form) as a critique of liberalism. Marxism is antithetical to liberalism (I’m not talking about the colloquial use of the term that’s gained currency in the US; I’m talking about property rights, individual rights and basic freedoms). The route from liberalism to ‘woke’, via Marx, Nietzsche, the Frankfurt School and some of the postmodern thinkers (barring Foucault, who was explicitly critical of Marx) is complicated and Robinson shows how little he knows about it.
    Also, he is wrong to claim that the only options are ‘woke’ and Christianity. I am not Christian and do not consider the supposed ‘Christian values’ to be Christian at all, but rather social values that were incorporated into The Bible due to their utility; however, I am also opposed to ‘woke’ and the stultifying effect it has on social, academic and political discourse.
    Robinson doesn’t come across very well in this interview (which is a pity, because Andrew Gold isn’t very good at pushing back and questioning his guests). I am quite sure he could outmanoeuvre me as far as theology is concerned, but as someone who has spent the last 25 years studying and teaching philosophy I can say with near-certainty that he could stand to learn a little more.

      Christianity is deeply offensive, isn't it? And I say that as a Christian. You asked what religion God is a member of? God is not a member of any religion, God is completely self sufficient and we cannot add anything to who he is and what He has done. I hope you one day you can put aside your anger and consider the God-man Jesus who stepped into history to deal with humanity and its problems and he did it with love, grace, humility, and truth.
