Customs charges are often applicable BEYOND a certain value. Your Birkin bag would have passed that threshold. So customs charges and / or taxes are now applicable. It has nothing to do with DHL or whoever carry your shipment. DHL act as a customs agent for your country of destination. They collect and deal with the admin of your local customs for your convenience.
National carriers like USPS or Japan Post would leave you to run around dealing with customs yourself while they hold your parcel until customs give them the go ahead.
In some instances, goods and services tax are charged by eBay, who act as a tax agent to collect on behalf of the buyer’s local tax authorities.

I really would take it to Hermes for restoration. If you have it restored by leather surgeons Hermes won’t touch it in the future. Totally worth sending it to Hermes. It’s not that expensive.

Anything shipped internationally over $800.00 requires US customs. It's about 10% of the purchase price.

Hi, I would send it to the Hermes Spa. Unless you are sure to keep it and never wants to sell it back, a bag which was worked on by someone else will not have a chance to be accepted by the Hermes spa later on and will loose valuable value on the resell market because of this. You should be ready to wait for a some time to get it back as it is usually time costing but they are making real miracle and this is sure worth it and not so expensive as we might think. You have a certificate from Bababebi for authenticity which is like the graal for authenticity and will make it easy to sell later on if needed. It is used but with good spa, it will still stay a good deal, it is definitely a nice color.

Wow.... amazing story and thanks for the lessons Rebecca! I learnt so much from you. The tax was a big surprise and is quite abit too. It is disappointing that the condition was worst than expected, given that it is from japan. I hope the Leather surgeons can fix the scuffs. Please do a video on the restoration process for this bag, it will be an eye opener! TFS hun!

For what it's worth I think your birkin is beautiful as it is, but will be even better with a little TLC. If you got it for a really good price then I think you should be proud to own such an iconic piece. The most wonderful birkins of all are those owned by Jane Birkin herself, in all their lived in, sticker customised glory. Yours very definitely has that superb vibe too.

This a SNAD case. Open a PayPal dispute under the significantly not as described. $5500 is a lot of money that you can put towards a mint condition Hermès or go to the boutique directly and try your luck as first time buyer. The leather courchevel is not a durable leather and can easily be replicated, reason why Hermès discontinued it. So sorry to hear about your bag. Vintage Hermès birkin in fjord and Ardennes have the durability factor you might want to look into those leather. Epsom is the successor of courchevel that’s why they look similar but epsom can withstand the test of time. Courchevel not so much

Yes! The last several purchases I've made from Japan as well as Dubai i’ve been charged custom fees! I feel like the last couple years things have changed.

Thank you for watching and for the comment. Even though the Japan ebay site has "custom fees" are the customer responsibility - I guess I was thinking it didn't apply to the USA. ha ha I have learned alot from this purchase and my eyes are open next time.

Love it! Just received mine. Same color way but epsom leather. Year is 1998. Wear on the corners but other than that the condition is very good. Mine came with clochette and keys. Thinking of taking to H spa. Question- is the pocket lining suede? Mine is. Will have it authenticated. 🤎🤎🤎

If you ever again purchase on Ebay from a foreign seller , ask them to ship by regular mail . I've found that by avoiding the commercial carriers , the item is unlikely to be subjected to customs charges . Sure , you are supposed to pay these charges regardless , but guess what ? Nobody does , unless the Post Office demands payment before they'll deliver . As for your bag not matching up to the description , you could legitimately ask the seller to refund your money . Yes there will be some jiggery-pokery getting your customs payment back , but don't let that put you off . The seller should pay your return shipping cost too

It won’t make a difference if you declare full value. Because any item coming through any international borders, in this case into the border of the USA, will be taxable by the country’s customs. If you don’t declare full value you can’t insure full value and will not be covered. Also in some cases eBay collects taxes on behalf of country the item is going into.

I’ve taken a vintage Kelly to the Hermès spa and they did a crap job, I’ve refused it 3x already bc they’re charging me $500 and I’m not going to accept it until it looks like they did a $500 spa job. I also inquired about leather surgeons but when you have a bag over 5k the shipping and insurance goes into multiple hundreds and I think that’s just shipping one way so not great. I would message your concerns to the Japanese reseller they’re always pretty reasonable

Sorry to hear about your bad spa experience. I used Leather Surgeon and it was 435.oo and no shipping fees each way. (well I;m sure the 435 had the cost of shipping in there) Thank you for watching. I'm going to do a video showing before and after spa. Stay tuned

@@rebeccabartonhandbaglover I actually went back to see and it’s .90 for every $100 each way, I def did the math wrong the first time I must have hit $10 cuz yes it’s only $45 each way. I have a blue Jean Kelly I’ll take to Hermès to see if they’ll do it in the workshop here in SF, but if they tell me they have to send it to Paris I’ll just send it to leather surgeons. Good thing I checked again
