I was busy that summer basically living in movie theaters.

My point was that they were forcing the tree to fall in whatever direction it was leaning or had the most branches. Which was the side the fence was on. The horizontal cut is going to allow the tree to spin on the cut. So, it fell in the direction they notched it and wedged it.
It's pretty cute that they believed they could push a 3000 kg treetrunk in a direction with two hands though. Aside from the fact that it's a fail-by-default system and they're dead if the trunk snaps off. I always did it with a pulley and a minimum of two people. Twice the force they can generate normally and they're way out of the way where the tree can snap or fall.
