  • I bought a Sony MZ-R55 in the middle of the night from someone on Facebook for $15!!!! It worked, but not really. Basically not working. Can I fix it?
    I am so not a consumer electronics repair guy. What with my sausage fingers and rudimentary soldering skills. But I do have an Internet connection and a set of tiny screwdrivers, so let's dive in.
    Apologies for the sound quality in parts - I am working in my music room on a 34c November afternoon and the air-conditioning is not silenced .

    Very brave of you to do this for the very first time on video. It gives me confidence to try this myself, should one of mine fail. Thank you!

    Dude! En-vy! You scored big time! I got my mz-r35 (just the thing) for 25€, two new batteries (18€), charger (1€) and remote phones(12€).
    I´d like to advise about the original Sony chargers: they used to put out too high voltage. The thing needs 6 and Sony gave ´em 9.
    I found a Philips SBC 6608/00 charger that puts out exact 6volts and has the right plug. Just look for any 6vdc charger and adapt the plug.
    When I had the 35 in the 90´s it used to get warm while plugged in- I never liked that. Now it stays nice and cool, even whilst running being plugged in.
    Have a good time, I know I´m late to the party but had the urge to say something like "You lucky MoFo!"

    Awesome job, glad you were able to bring your r55 back from the brink of button unresponsiveness lol. I find that a lot of what I buy broken to repair ends up just needing a simple clean to fix. It's always a good idea though to know how to do general cleaning and maintenance to keep our dated devices going for as long as possible.

      I think it's interesting that this is almost the same idea that my analogue tape loving peeps have to live with - want to use the technology, you need to have some understanding of it. I think MD is probably the last of the digital music consumer tech before everything became solid state and you need to be able to do surface soldering in order to get any fixes happening.

    Absolutely love it! Geat work, loved the video, and thanks for the shout out and the links. The REM disc on its own is worth more than $15 I would say.
    That unit was in a mess. Great work on a thorough clean up. What surprised me was that the remote wouldn't work either. I wonder how the remote and the controller board are linked. Thanks again!

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re welcome! Your videos have certainly been helpful.
      I suspect (but don’t quote me) that the controller board was overriding the commands from the remote. When I was fiddling around trying to get it working without opening it up, it would actually occasionally respond to a ‘previous track’ button press but that was it.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hirogarimusic Thank you. Interesting info. I have a MZ-R70 that looks like it has a short somewhere, and using a compatible remote didn't help, so I concur with your theory that the controller board and remote are connected in some way. That could be handy when troubleshooting.

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If I had to guess the front control buttons have a higher priority when polled by the dsp. So if something is wrong and the unit sends a stuck button command that ties up control then the dsp wont respond to any other front button nor the remote buttons. I ran across a similar yet different issue with a nintendo 3ds where most of the buttons stopped working, it turned out the screen protector was permanently pressing one corner of the touch screen which took priority over most of the other buttons making it look like the system was locked up and not responding to button presses. Removing the protector cleared up everything.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sjm4306 I suppose removing the button controller board ribbon cable and trying the remote only might help. Trouble is, I don't have a remote. Also, how much time and effort should a n00b like me risk trying to repair a a unit that I could replace from eBay for £50?

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CBitsTech yeah just for a fun hobby don't pour more time and effort into a fix than entertainment you'd get out of it (otherwise your hobby turns into a side job lol). I started out fixing stuff just for fun and eventually started doing paid repairs for others and that just sucks 90% of the fun out of it.

      @@TheHeed1969 These players are better repairable than iphones!
      And yes,opening and cleaning would be the first step-alcohol on pads and get rid of all the dust - while doing so you watch out for all the movable parts and then looking on the plates if there’s something noticeable.
      You might have a good chance to fix that on your own or with the help of some tutorials shown here on youtube for the specific models🤙

    Minidisc is my no.1 favourite recording and music archiving format. But full sized minidisc recorders were a stupid idea and contributed to the failure of the format, minidisc was designed to be small simple as that, a full sized deck never made any sense to me, these sonys were 90% empty space inside, a real space waster for no good reason, this is why i LOVE my Onkyo FR-X7, sony machines suffered from two design faults, 1, their VFD screens faded like crap in a very short time due to being overdriven by the wrong resistor fitted to the VFD tube, and 2, their mechanisms were very poor, my onkyo is the best sounding minidisc machine ive ever heard.

      @hirogarimusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @hirogarimusic

      They also included a consumer recorded MD with bass/drum/keys backing tracks for country-western.
      The reason for trying to play a disc recorded on another machine is that it helps determine if the heads are properly aligned - sometimes you can record a disc and play it in the same machine, but it won’t play on other machines due to head alignment issues.
